MAHK JCHI / Ulali (THR7581 $16.98 CD / $10.98 CS)--Pura Fe lives in North Carolina, giving this increasingly popular group its Carolina Connection. The three members blend their talents to deliver a mystical and sweeping sound which combines a variety of traditional and contemporary indigenous music of the Americas. Singing about struggles and prophesies, their work is a form of personal and historic expression. PLAYTIME / Teresa Trull & Barbara Higbie (SLB82212 $15.98 CD only) - --Another album by this beloved duo (Teresa is from Durham)...an upbeat collection of acoustic blues-flavored songs, strong harmonizing and songwriting. OUTSIDE THE LINES / Sue Witty & Fair Play (BCR1124 $14.98 CD only)--"Outside the Lines" is where this NC artist proudly finds herself, and it is from this perspective that she writes her songs. Sue joins with a 3 piece band, resulting in a "Natalie Merchant hangs out with the Grateful Dead" sort of feel. BROKEN BRIDGES / Kid Sister (KS2 $14.98 CD / $9.98 CS)--Kid Sister's first full-length album features an eclectic mixture of smooth acoustic melodies and downright edgy rock 'n' roll. The Durham based duo (Ruth Vienneau and Piper Kessler) showcases their variety in taste and talent in their arrangements. LADYMAN / Kaia (MRL01 $15.98)--This newly adopted Carolina resident (via Indiana-via Oregon) has a sound that is uniquely her own. Stream-of-consciousness lyrics tell stories about her girlfriend, her friends, being a lesbian rocker in small-town Indiana and some other stuff we haven't figured out yet. MABEL'S BEAUTY SHOP & CHAINSAW REPAIR / Melanie Sparks (NOS6017 $14.98 CD only)--For the past several years, this NC artist has been captivating audiences all over the east coast with amazing performances. Her unique songwriting style transcends the usual "girl with guitar" label. THE BEST OF NINA SIMONE (PHP822846 $15.98 CD / $9.98) ULTIMATE NINA SIMONE (VRV539050 $15.98 CD only)--I'm sure I'm not the only person happy to say that this incredible songstress was born in North Carolina. That's why we are offering you two of her incredible recordings. THE MUSIC OF MARY LOU WILLIAMS / Marian McPartland (CJ4605 $16.98 CD only)--This album from the great jazz pianist Marian McPartland marks the first time anyone has ever recorded an entire album of the legendary Mary Lou Williams' timeless recordings. Since Mary Lou was artist in residence at Duke University and a long time North Carolina resident, this recording has its Carolina Connection. INNER CHAMBERS / Deb Criss (CLS012 $15.98 CD / $9.98 CS)--Deb combines her skills as a singer/songwriter with those from her Asheville, NC healing practice to create this set of drone-based, chakra-opening lyrical songs. ANOTHER DOOR / Tracy Drach (DND001 $15.98 CD / $9.98 CS) - --Long a local favorite, this singer/songwriter/guitarist exemplifies both versatility and consistency in crowd-pleasing, whether performing solo or opening for such acts as k.d. lang or the Washington Sisters. RED CROSS WOMAN / BeJae Fleming (TER08 $14.98 CD only)--This North Carolina native cut her musical teeth in Texas, but now homesteads on the prairies of Iowa. This debut release can be found at the corner where folk meets blues. RENE RUSSELL / Rene Russell (VRG8950 $14.98 CD only)--A native of Columbia SC, and now a part of the fertile Austin TX music scene, Rene has been on the road for 10 years with her finger-pickin 12-string guitar and friendly rock-n-roll. The blackgirls are way cool. I only know of two albums of theirs, both of which I have. The other one is Happy. The above is a pretty fair description. They use some nice piano too. For what it's worth, both of their albums turn up used and cheep pretty often. They aren't new either, being released in 1989 and 1991. Whatever happened to them anyway. Also, both albums are produced by Joe Boyd. > MAHK JCHI / Ulali (THR7581 $16.98 CD / $10.98 CS)--Pura Fe lives in > North Carolina, giving this increasingly popular group its Carolina > Connection. Singing about struggles > and prophesies, their work is a form of personal and historic expression. I saw Ulali at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival about 3 years ago. The Festival has a number of different ethnic topics each year, and one of them that year was Native American Women, which resulted in a lot of good food and wonderful music. Ulali was the standout group, for me at least. Melding classic Native American music with a somewhat more modern sound, reminding me a bit of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Smithsnion Folkways put out a soundtrack album, that I think also goes with a documentary, called HEARTBEAT: Voices of First Nations Women, which is chock full of wonderful music, and highly recommended if that sounds at all interesting. They also appear prominantly on Robbie Robertson's equally wonderful and for some reason not too well known disc, Music from the Native Americans, credited to Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble. Perhaps that was music to a documentary rather than the first one. Anyway, they are both really good, and Ulali puts on a very strong show. I've never heard the disc though, and despite signing up on their mailing list, never heard from them again. Neal np; Mary Lou Lord - got no shadow hmmmm, 10 hours til I leave for LA. There are a lot of jazz treatments of pop standards, like Que Sera Sera, I Can See Clearly Now (the rain is gone), Downtown, and more. Those discs are a blast! After seeing her wonderful show last month, I picked up all the older ones I didn't have, and love them. Prior to this, she did an album that is all Tom Waits covers, which I also think is pretty damn wonderful. It's called Temptation. I get to see her again in about 10 days!
