Since I can't help him, I asked him if I could forward his questions to Ecto, which was alright with him. Anybody who can help him? His email address is guida.tinta@taguspark.pt (I cc-ed this message to him as well). Guida also offered "If there's a mailing list of people who like her work and don't have some of her music, I can make some tapes - Better yet, I can make realaudio files to put on the website!" And if we'd like any more info we're welcome (Neile?). Here's Guida's message (I edited it a little bit to combine two messages into one). [...begin forwarded message...] Hi! I'm a big fan of Virginia's music, but unfortunately, I can't seem to reach anyone who shares this with me. I'm in Portugal - Europe, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't mortify myself for not having been present when she came here with Kate Saint John! (I guess that this was one of those - once in a lifetime thing). I have 3 CD of hers, but I can't seem to find her first work, "Melt the snow". Because I really want to find that song, and this one is my last chance. Also I can't find the name of a song that goes like this "...I see your eyes are trained as mice, the rain will rain while I keep singing, what can I say, what can I say..." something like this. I'd appreciate if anyone could contact me. Thank you in advance, Guida. guida.tinta@taguspark.pt [...end forwarded message...] Best wishes, Marion - ---------------------- n.p. Am I even more of a freak than I realize? Inquiring >minds want to know!!! Cyoakha answers; OH MY GOD YOU TOO...I too have a thing with her and one other female vocalist, it's terrible. I first saw Paula live with Peter Gabriel on video and was charmed by this shy and gawky singer with the warm voice...so when she toured a few years back with Sarah I went and was surprised at the "act", (she banged on a cookie sheet and lept around a lot) but overall thought she was more interesting than most. Now, oh my, she's got what I call the "Cindi Lauper syndrom", where you start to buy your own image and enlarge it even more until you are a charactcher of yourself. At the Lilith Faire everyone was pretty mellow "acting", downtone if ya know what I mean...Jewel always acts oh so cute, but even she was downtoning and Paula comes out, beating herself while playing the piano and all these giant dramatic hand gestures and all, it was almost funny! The she ran over to the bas drum, made a giant show over bending down and beating it three or four times with a large mallet!!!The crowd went nuts, I was laughing my ass off (being a singer who struggles to drum while singing, and struggles to remain in the music and not a show, oh maybe that's why I haven't been signed, I don't overact enough!!!haha) So I bought the last album, very dissappointed in the songs, two or three were alright but the comstant rock drum and repetition drove me away from most of the rest...WAS I SHOCKED TO HEAR BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!I almost gave up writing music...yet, I still do like her voice, all thin and reedy at the top, her growls and roars, her warmth in the lower range...but don't want to see her live again....also the same with B'jork.....love the innovation, the voice that flys all over, the strange lyrics and some of her songs..BUT, saw her live once, ugh ugh ugh....acting like a 10 year old, dressed in a little girl dress and baby janes and running all over the stage and pouting and sticking out her tongue at audience and I ALMOST PUKED thinking, wow, I came here as a fellow avant artist to see how she took that artistic sensibility into performance, expecting performance art of some kind and saw a bad kiddie-porn, fake rock act from a grown woman, singer-songwriter, mother....AND OF COURSE THE CROWD LOVED IT, THEY ROARED EACH TIME SHE STUCK HER ITTY FINGER IN HER MOUTH...AND ALL AROUND ME SAID "OHHHHH, SHE'S SO CUTE!"...so I am now afraid of concerts and only go see those obsure performers as much as possible...haha...I still love her voice and music also, but will avoid all "ACTS"....peace, Cyoakha, Land O' Blind Land of the Blind c/o NW New Music 3439 NE Sandy Blvd., Suite 266 Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. 97232 (503) 321-5093 email lanblind@teleport.com http://www.teleport.com/~lanblind/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 18:03:40 -0600 (CST) From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: welcome to the church of me: paula cole at toad's On Tue, 3 Mar 1998, Neal Copperman wrote: > > me me me! [snip] That's the problem, isn't it--the "audience" loves it. I can't blame the performers for doing it when the audience goes for it so loudly, but *gag*. I have the same problem with performers in other genres, poetry included. It takes being over the top to get to a general audience--subtlety and nuance just doesn't play with the greater bulk of humans. It also depends on what the artist is looking for and what her self-image is. Some people want to be over the top, like Bjork. I still don't think she'd ever win a record-of-the-year grammy, though, because her form of being over the top is a little more ironic. Irony doesn't play well with the public. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 20:21:51 -0600 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re:loving and hating a singer I was also thinking that the flip side of all this is true, too--I don't like seeing a performer live who is so reserved and the performance so subdued that she doesn't connect with the audience. Heather Nova was rather that way when I saw her--she could have been an automaton up there on stage. The sound was great but it was as though she wasn't there in the same room with us even though we were only feet away from her. It's not quite as off-putting as someone who is over-dramatic but it's just as distancing for me. - --Neile ("this bowl is too hot and this bowl is too cold...") - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Mar 1998 00:51:08 +0000 From: BarBearUh Subject: Re: loving and hating a singer i've had the same experience with paula cole. i thought she was fabulous on peter gabriel's 'us' tour. around that time, i saw the banging on the cookie sheet tour. she played in a small restaurant in downtown dc (for free no less). i was pretty bored by her. a couple of songs stood out, but overall i thought she was pretty dull. i have this problem that rarely does not occur - if i see someone live and i don't like their show, i lose interest in them. there are a few exceptions, but not too many. i never had any of paula's records, but someone gave me her new one for christmas, which i was never able to listen to all the way through. when i see her videos now, they are a total turn off. BTW, she didn't win for best new album, but for best new artist. the fact that she beat erykah badu and fiona apple is just unbelievable to me. although not a big fan of either of those folks (like 'em, don't love 'em), i think they show a lot more diversity and style in their work. barbara np: catie curtis ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #73 *************************
