I just heard that Jayne Sachs is getting her first taste of national exposure on that show, and I can't listen to it because no station in my area carries the show. Argh! Anyway, they're apparently playing the title track from her new CD, "It's A Scream". If you hear it, and like it, be sure to call the radio show and let them know. Apparently, they will only continue to play her stuff if they get some positive feedback. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Mar 1998 04:52:26 -0500 From: Kamesan Subject: Some reviews from Toronto!/Canadian Music Week Hiya philes... This week in Toronto has been packed with great shows by local artists. Andrea Florian and Ember Swift It's been a while since I caught an Andrea Florian show, and when this Holy Joe's show with Ember Swift was announced, I jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately I jumped a little late and arrived just as she was starting her last song. Half of her band had changed: from the all female, four member band I'd seen in the summer, she'd replaced two of the members with guys, which unfortunately seemed to mean the end of the gorgeous four-part female harmonies that characterized her previous performances. I was pleased to note that the one remaining member of the old band besides Andrea herself was the one I knew, cellist Sharon Tiessen, who up until this year, also played with Sarah Slean. Anyway the one song I heard was as good as ever. Ember Swift was fun too. VERY reminiscent of Ani Difranco, especially in her vocal style. I'll have to see her again to get a better impression of her though. Kevin Fox, opening for Bone Kevin, who's playing his own stuff now after playing supporting roles for 7 years with acts such as Dayna Manning, never ceases to amaze. Yet another product of that apparently bottomless well of musical talent, maritime Canada, Kevin takes gorgeous mellow pop gems of songs and serves them up in a voice like maple syrup. He's currently in the midst of recording his first CD. Bone is a 6-member band led by an eccentric but engaging lead singer. He definitely had the talent, a great voice, remarkable stage presence, and a top-notch band (including Kevin Fox on cello and acoustic guitar), but I failed to connect with his music and ended up leaving midway through his set. Sarah Slean/Cynthia Hallett There were a couple of major-label A&R reps at this C'est What show, so Sarah was a bit nervous, but she handled herself very well, although she was a bit less chatty than usual. Her shows tend to be characterized by a lot of storytelling and a remarkable amount of self-disclosure. Anyway she pulled out all the stops for this show and in addition to her fantastic percussionist Mark Mariash, and new regular cellist Mike, she invited Kevin Fox to add his golden bow to the mix, plus a backup vocalist. The result was a wonderfully textured sound that was surprisingly good considering this was the first time they'd all played together. Afterwards in an email to Sarah's manager I remarked that Sarah has gotten to the point where she consistently disappoints me, and that this is a good thing. What I meant is that Sarah has so many terrific songs now that it is impossible for her to play all of them at any given show, and consequently I'm bound to be let down that she didn't play at least a couple of songs that I love. Cynthia Hallett was less than captivating and inspired our rapid flight from the venue. Red Autumn Fall/Zuckerbaby/Sandbox I've raved about the superb Calgarian band Red Autumn Fall (now based in Toronto) on ecto before. Male-fronted but featuring a female drummer, this is one of the most energizing live acts I've seen, largely due to the insanely manic antics of Simeon, the lead singer. If ever this band makes it to your city, you MUST see them. Zuckerbaby is an all-male pop band that has been getting a lot of airplay on Canadian radio for good reason. They play strong pop-rock songs with powerful hooks and great harmonies, and the crowd in the jam-packed Lee's Palace clearly loved them. We left before Sandbox came on as none of us like them. - ------------------------- Some announcements: Next week is Canadian Music Week. If you're within striking distance of Toronto, now would be an excellent time to spend a weekend vacation here. One of the highlights of the week will be Steve Poltz, who most here should know fronts the San Diego band the Rugburns, and who several years ago took young singer Jewel under his wing, gave her a shot at the singer-songwriter thing, and co-wrote several songs with her. He'll be playing three times, at the Horseshoe on Tues 3, Holy Joe's Fri 6, and C'est What? Sat 7. Other shows of note during Canadian Music Week: THURSDAY: Dayna Manning @ Horseshoe 9pm, Wild Strawberries @ Horseshoe 10:45, Age of Electric Phoenix 11pm FRIDAY: Holly McNarland @ Reverb 10pm, Kevin Fox @ Holy Joe's 10pm, Sarah Slean @ C'est What? 11pm, at 12 pm there's a logjam of great shows occurring at once including Wide Mouth Mason at Lee's, Barstool Prophets @ Rivoli, Mighty Mighty Bosstones @ Opera House, Arlene Bishop @ Cameron. Scratching Post plays the 360 and Tribal Stomp the Generator at 1am. SATURDAY: Van Allen Belt @ Lee's 10pm, Matthew Good Band @ Lee's 11pm, another logjam at 12pm with Treble Charger @ Reverb, Rusty @ Warehouse, and The Fixx @ Rivoli. 1am features Moe Berg @ Reverb and Tory Cassis @ Cameron A $30 wristband gets you into all of these shows. I was in the mood for some new music today.....so I drove over to Borders (my home away from home). Started in the magazines and picked up RockerGirl, Q Magazine, and a couple of other music-related things.......and as I was looking around, I heard a female voice with an acoustic guitar. Wandering around the corner, I discovered that the friendly folks at Borders were hosting another one of their free concerts -- this time featuring a woman named Ratsy. Well, she was sounding pretty good, so I scanned the area to see if she was selling her cd's.....sure enough, she was. I grabbed the last copy of "Squished Under a Train" and a copy of her newest release, "The Subway Songstress Years." Then I sat down to listen. She was very entertaining! Had a cute way of smiling and curtseying after each song. When I spoke to her during a break, I asked her if she'd ever been compared to Christine Lavin because of the humor in both of their song lyrics. She said she'd just met Christine, but thought of herself more along the lines of Cheryl Wheeler. Her songs are simple, her voice clear, and she plays a pretty good guitar. I just have to share the lyrics to one of my favorites that she performed: If You're Not Dead you hold my hand, while we're walking I steer you 'round on streets nearby we sit and watch my christmas tree it feels so nice, sitting here with you you ask if I'm free thursday too you have to go, we kiss goodbye and you call me wednesday night ask if everything's alright which is why i just don't see why you're doing this to me i feel stood up, you haven't come i'm wondering what could be wrong if you're not dead, why don't you call if you're not dead, then what is wrong were you squished under a train are you in a lot of pain wondering what is wrong with you perchance a mishap at the zoo i feel stood up, you haven't come i'm wondering what could be wrong if you're not dead, why don't you call if you're not dead, then what is wrong i'm giving up on you tonight i'm going to bed turn out the light i've got this feeling you're not dead you probably just misplaced your head Ratsy will be performing in Atlanta and in Massachusetts soon.....check her out at www.ratsy.com She's definitely worth a listen! And in other news......in addition to the two Ratsy CD's I picked up, I got these: Vonda Shepard - The Radical Light Sarah Masen - self-titled Alpha - Come From Heaven Lida Husik - Fly Stereophonic Husikesque - Green Blue Fire All in all -- a wonderful trip!
