In "The Joan Baez Songbook" (Ryerson Music Publishers, 1964), it says about this song, "This is an American version of part of a British lyric song; additional verses to the original song can be found in 'The Wagoner's Lad.' In its present form, the song has been collected from New England farmers, southern mountaineers, western pioneers and cowboys. Some of its verses appear as folk lyrics in other songs." Now I get to the strange part. In the back of the songbook, it lists "Rambler Gambler" as being on the LP "Joan Baez in Concert, Part 2" (released 1963). I *have* that LP, and it's not there! I could've sworn that I knew her version of the song since forever (a la the 60s)! However I do have her doing it on a double album (LP) called "Very Early Joan" (released in 1982). Whoops! Just checked the Joan Baez Web Pages and see that the MONO release of "Joan Baez in Concert, Part 2" had "Rambler Gambler" on it--I have the stereo version of this LP. ::sigh:: Which doesn't help me figure out how I think I knew this song from the 60s...faulty memory? I wasn't good at learning songs from sheet music back then, so having the songbook probably didn't help me much. Anyway, she did an upbeat version of this, paired with "Whispering Bells", (arranged and produced by Paul Simon) on "Speaking of Dreams" (1989), which was also part of a CD called "No Woman No Cry" (1992). Hey everyone, There aren't any Paul Kelly experts out there, by any chance...? Last night here in Sydney the Indigo Girls did a song which a friend tells me is possibly a Paul Kelly song, I was wondering if anybody could help me ID it... All I remember is that the lyrics mentioned Kings Cross, and the chorus had the words "gone away" in it. I taped the show but I'm too tired to go dig it out and find the song on the tape right now... You should definitely check it out! I second that!!! I haven't had a spare moment to review *anything*, but I will take this opportunity to finally say something about Michelle Kinney. We saw her with her trio, Mississippi Peace do an opening set before Chris Cunningham's CD Release gig at the Parkside Lounge in NYC last Saturday night, and the entire evening was wonderful. The Parkside Lounge is located on Very East Houston Street, and from the outside it looks like a total dive. The front room doesn't belay that impression, but then you notice there's classical music playing over the sound system, and the bartender is discussing rather artsy subjects with the guys hanging on the bar. Then you go into the back room and it's like all of a sudden you're in somebody's living room, with wall-to-wall carpeting and chairs set about, and nice soft track lighting. It's very odd, but very cool. Sort of like the Buttonwood Tree in Soho. Michelle's music ranged from experimental neo-modern-classical string arrangements to slightly straightforward (but with a twist) songs. She has a rather nice voice, if not a particularly strong one -- I'd only heard her sing backup on a few Chanting House songs before that. I picked up her tape, which only has 4 songs on it, all of which she performed that night. Chris Cunningham's set was great as well. He was accompanied by a rotating plethora of musicians, including Michelle Kinney and also the (always unbelievably hip :) Lindsey Horner on bass. The music was also slightly straightforward rock-with-a-twist, accompanied by various combinations of cello, accordion, bass, percussion, samples, and of course Chris' amazing guitar work. His singing voice is at once reminiscent of David Bowie and Bryan Ferry, and even at times David Sylvian. We picked up his cd _Songs To Play_, which I gathered was the premiere release of the new label Lunchbox Records . I haven't had much of a chance to listen to it yet, but my early impressions are that Chris doesn't seem to be suffering from "great live, not so great in the studio" syndrome. The performance itself was enhanced by three sets of video montages accompanying the music, and artwork hung on the walls which was photographed and collaged to make the artwork in the liner notes of the disc. If I'm in this time zone on the 12th, I'll be at the Living Room for sure... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 13:20:39 EST From: Songbird22 Subject: Tori Amos is married!! :) Hi. :) I just heard the cool news that Tori Amos got married last weekend to her sound engineer!! :) Yay Tori! :) Jessica! 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu / Songbird22@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 00:17:17 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Lisa Cerbone - on-line interview/concerts Tomorrow night I will be doing a RealAudio Interview with George Mason University's college station.
