Stuart 'SPLIT' BY LUSH OFFICIAL LUSH have announced their permanent split after nearly a year-and-a-half of inactivity following the suicide of drummer Chris Acland (second from the left in the photo) in October 1996. Guitarist and singer Emma Anderson has formed her own band Sing-Sing and is currently demoing songs to secure a record deal. Lush lead singer Miki Berenyi is also working on solo material. Phil King will be joining the Jesus And Mary Chain as bassist on their upcoming tour. A statement from Lush's record company 4AD says the split is completely amicable. The demise of the band had been anticipated for some time in music circles since their career had been on hold since drummer Acland committed suicide at his parent's Lake District home. While it always seemed unlikely that Lush would continue without their long-time friend in the line-up, no reasons have been given as to why they took so long to finally announce the end of the partnership. The band, who formed in 1988, had a career spanning three albums and one mini-LP - 'Spooky', 'Split', 'Lovelife' and 'Scar', respectively - the last being 'Lovelife' in March 1996. Their first album 'Spooky' was their most successful, reaching number seven in the UK album charts in February 1992. They achieved their biggest UK singles chart success with their last three releases in 1996: 'Single Girl' reached number 21 in January of that year, 'Ladykillers' hit 22 in March and '500 (Shake Baby Shake)' made it to 21 in July. Lush also made well-received appearances on the US Lollapaloza tours. __________________________________________________________________________ Stuart Myerburg stuart@sph.emory.edu Information Services stuart@emory.edu Rollins School of Public Health http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~stuart __________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 14:26:35 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Kathleen Yearwood Hi, all-- Just wanted to let you know that I heard from Kathleen Yearwood. _Little Misery Birds_ hasn't yet been released on cd by SUBTerrean, but soon. I'm a big 'Hip fan. Their version of "Courage" is actually also included in the movie. It's playing on Sarah Polley's radio/cassette player when she's lying in bed and her father comes in to talk to her (just before she tesitifies.) I loved Sarah Polley's version and I thought the Hip's version was well placed during the movie. The Tragically Hip are guitar oriented somewhat R.E.M. like. A lot of their fans are also fans of Phish. I find their lyrics to be very intelligent, and the songwriting top notch. I really loved their last two studio albums, the names of which are escaping me. If you like a little intelligent, well-written rock & roll, give them a try. They put on a killer live show as well. Their song, "Grace, too" just blows me away! I just sent this to the Jewel list (trying to whip some culture on 'em!) so it's a cut & paste from that post. Alan Hello again all, Since not much is hapnin lately, I thought this would be an appropriate time to tell you about this. As many of you know, Jewel's favorite albums growing up were the "Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook" albums. Late last year Ella's label back then, Verve, remastered those recordings for the first time from the actual masters. Now, not only do they sonically blow away any previous versions, but both volume 1 & 2 of "EFSTCPS" is in a nice 2 CD package & includes a few alternate takes previously unissued. (It also contains the definitive version of "Too Darn Hot".) It's really a nice little package. I picked it up a few months ago & have been really enjoying it. Jewel & Lenedra both picked it up a few days ago. If you're already hip to Ella, you'll love the upgraded versions & if you're simply curious which album most influenced Jewel vocally, this is it. Previous inferior versions of these albums are still in stock at a lot of stores, so if you want this, make sure its Verve Records catalogue # 314 537 257-2. (Note: this is a Verve item #, NOT a phone # to order! Any respectable CD store can order it for you) Make sure its the 1997 Master Edition release with that item #. Hope this helps some of you. Well, this is a coincidence, seeing this post! We just went to see a great local Celtic band, Silver Arm, Friday night at a large non-chain bookstore. :-) Afterward I was talking with the fiddler and asked her what CD she'd recommend I get. Her first choice was Solas! However she saw another CD that she thought would be more brilliant for me to get, so I ended up getting "Laurence Nugent" instead. However, after seeing this post, I will be getting some Solas in a nearer future than I anticipated e'er I read this post (how's *that* for convoluted?!). fleur - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joanna M. Also, this saturday at 10 pm, VH-1 will be premiering the Storytellers that she taped last month in LA. I'm so excited because I'll be able to spot all my fumbler friends in the audience :) And of course, she'll probably be at the Grammy's tomorrow...didja hear that the producers of the show cut out Radiohead's performance because they thought it would be too depressing? Music in commercials? I'm too young to remember all these *old* commercials y'all are spewing out :) Tanita Tikaram's "I Might Be Crying" was used in a commercial for something tropical...i can't remember what... Enya of course in the Crystal Light spots with Orinoco Flow Peter Gabriel's "Talk to Me" (is that the title?) used in some Phone company's ads. Madeleine Peyroux doing car commercials now... Those Listerine Commercials Anyone know who does the vocals and music that Jennifer Connelly lip synchs to in Dark City, coming out this friday? Something i noticed while working at my movie theater...The Wedding Singer has the Presidents of the US doing "Video Killed The Radio Star" in the end credits...i love that song...and I think Senseless (or maybe it's Zero Effect) uses "I Love Miss America" from David Byrne's latest album in the end credits. the group Fastball has a wonderfully catchy tune out called "The Way"....i like...hmm...slinky, kinda like Elvis Costello meets Los Lobos, i guess... Another group called Cotton Mather has a nice album out that showcases bigtime Beatles influences... Happy fat tuesday!
