I vividly remember riding my bike to get a new Elton John album with my own money in junior high some time, but my first "personal" album was probably a Beatles cassette my parents gave me in fourth grade. High school continued with Elton John, added Chicago (all marching band brass players *had* to adore Chicago :), then moved on to Yes, ELP, and finally (!!) Genesis, as well as related progressive and electronic music (Tomita, Walter/Wendy Carlos, Jean-Michel Jarre, etc.) I discovered Kate Bush in college, and the rest is history. I don't think anyone else has mentioned Disco records among their embarrassing ones, but I admit I had at least one Donna Summer and some Bee Gees albums. I got rid of all vinyl the last time I moved, so I no longer have those particular gems. My CD collection contains plenty of what later turned out to be one-hit wonders, but nothing springs to mind as that embarrassing; you often know you're probably getting certain albums for one song anyway. My work stack, which usually consists of the most recent acquisitions, this week contains: Evelyn Glennie Her Greatest Hits Michael Stearns Collected Thematic Works 1977--1987 Tim Story Abridged The Sweet Hereafter Soundtrack David Sylvian Secrets of the Beehive Wild Strawberries Quiver Last week had Kristin Hersh's _Strange Angels_ and Susan McKeown's _Bushes & Briars_. I know some people felt Kristin's album wasn't living up to _Hips & Makers_ yet, but I found it better: I think the songs sound more... mature, I guess, and somehow more finished. Several, especially "Hope", have definite multi-repeat-button character for me. On the other hand, _Bushes & Briars_ hasn't grown on me much yet; it really benefited from the good sound system when I took it home (as opposed to ear buds at work), but I don't see myself liking it the way I do _Bones_. On the other hand, Kristin's latest sounds great no matter how you listen to it. I believe Jill has mentioned Deanna Kirk's latest, _Where Are You Now_, and I don't know why it hasn't received more buzz here. It's more what I would call "piano bar" music than typically more exotic, quirky, or ethereal Ecto music, but Deanna has a great voice and sings several touching songs. I asked about her first album here several months ago and decided to get it despite no feedback; it didn't grab me that much, and going back to it after the new one hasn't changed my opinion. The new one's a winner, though. Movies. Looking back, "LA Confidential," "Ulee's Gold," and "Chasing Amy" seem to stand out, but I know I'm forgetting other possibilities. _Titanic_ is a great example of "epic" in many ways, so I won't be surprised or disappointed if it wins the Oscar, even if other films might better it in various respects. I had no problem with "The English Patient" winning for "grand sweep" last year, even though I probably would have picked "Lonestar" as the best movie I saw that year. "Gattaca" was a nice surprise; the trailer made we want to see it for atmosphere alone, and it turned out to have a plot and something to say as well. The exquisitely melancholy soundtrack probably would have made my top ten albums for 1997, had I made such a list. I like Barbara's categories for grouping artists independently of gender. Rather than consciously collecting female artists as a genre, I think I've been drawn to female vocalists simply because I love the female voice. I also think songs that might be sung to me sometimes communicate with me more strongly than those which might be sung on my behalf, so to speak. Then again, I'm thinking of lots of counter-examples to this statement as I type, so never mind. Wow. Far and away my longest post to Ecto. I'll leave you alone now. :) Greg np: _The Sweet Hereafter_ (The songs with Sarah Polley vocals are definite Ecto fare. Is she really as young (fourteenish) as she looks in the movie? And already quite an actress, vocalist, and lyricist. Pretty amazing.) nr: David Zindell's _The Broken God_ (So far a worthy successor to _Neverness_; yes, I know there are two more -- I'm *that* far behind.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 18:10:14 -0600 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: A double A&B shipment today! ;-) At 5:12 PM -0500 2/18/98, dmw wrote: >On Wed, 18 Feb 1998 Riphug@aol.com wrote: > >> Why do I have to be going out tonight? For the purposes of the list, any music an ectophile is interested is ectophilic music, and most people here would argue for the inclusion of Peter Gabriel at least in any definitive list of ecto artists. Most of the artists we discuss here are female, that's true, and that's definitely what I'm more interested in. Something about the female vocal range can make music interesting that I might not like if a male voice sang it. I also associate ecto music with ethereal vocals, though obviously the list's taste as a whole gets much beyond that, and not even all of Happy's vocals could be called ethereal (though even her deep voice is somewhat--I guess ethereal doesn't always mean in the upper octaves). And I don't think that ethereal gothic is any more ecto music than some of ecto's folk heroes. At one point while working on the Ectophiles' Guide I came up with evocative/eclectic--meaning music that draws on a number of genres yet is emotionally focused, but I never came up with a better term than that, and it's pretty awkward. I don't think anyone wants to say any music made by a woman is part of ecto nor to we want to exclude all males. So we leave it loose. By music by women is definitely a topic we're interested in here. Still, we're not the Ladyslipper catalog list. Especially since they stopped listing all of Happy's back catalog. ;> - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 16:59:51 -0800 (PST) From: "J. Wermont" Subject: Re: First records, work stack, etc., etc. My first record was the "I Want to Hold Your Hand" 45 (b/w "I Saw Her Standing There") by... well, do I really have to say? :) I was in 4th grade, and my dad bought it for me. It was shortly after the Beatles made their historic first appearance on Ed Sullivan and I was in a complete tizzy over it. My first album was also by the Beatles - it was called "Introducing the Beatles" and had songs like "Please Please Me" and "Twist and Shout" on it. I played it to death, as I did all my other Beatle albums. I was pretty obsessed with music from about 4th grade on, listened to the radio incessantly, and bought 45's (and sometimes albums) with my allowance whenever I could. I continued this all through high school and beyond, and amassed quite a vinyl collection. And guess what - I still have almost all of it, even the 45's (although, I think "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is gone). Some of them got broken, lost or stolen, but I haven't ever tried to go through the stack to purge any. My partner pleads with me to get rid of the albums, because they take up so much space, but the nostalgia associated with them gives me a lot of pleasure, so I don't want to (even though I haven't had a working turn table in about 10 years, so who knows when I'll get to play them again?). I'll probably have them till I die, unless circumstances force me to give them up. I'm definitely my mother's daughter here - she still has her Erroll Garner 78's from the 1940's! As for being embarrassed about music I used to like, I'm curious - does anyone really feel embarrassed about that? Or is that just a figure of speech, a little joke? I can't imagine being embarrassed about that, even if I've outgrown the old songs. I've probably liked a little bit of every type of music I had exposure to. I wasn't a huge disco fan but I did buy a few albums and 45's. I still like some of them, in fact. Most of the stuff I used to like still has some nostalgic value to me even if I no longer think the music's very interesting. I'm not that interested in baby boomer music anymore, mostly because I've heard it all too many times, but I keep it around anyway because it's part of my past. Once in a while it's fun to hear it again. Work stack... the ones I've been listening to recently are: Holly McNarland - Stuff Seven Day Diary - Skin & Blister (thanks Derek - it's really growing on me!) Mary Lou Lord - Got No Shadow (not as good as I'd hoped, but I still like it) Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Beautiful World Juned - Every Night For You The Folk Implosion - Dare to Be Surprised (now this is great - sometime I'll have to post about this one.) Movies - recent movies I felt affected by were: Good Will Hunting (really great dialogue), Wag the Dog (because I feel strongly about the issue of media manipulation) and Ma Vie En Rose (because it was fun and touching and had a nice message). Hmm..what else...oh, yeah, i'm gonna try my darndest to get up to Bryn Mawr on Monday to see Autour de Lucie at Borders at 7 pm...anyone game for that. Bought Little Plastic Castles yesterday....i have to say that with all of Ani's albums, i separate the songs into the unique songs and the typical-ani- strum-angrily songs, and i find the latter to be kind of boring. but those unique songs...oh those unique songs...so good they are. Last week bought the Wild Strawbs album Quiver (I miss the loungey, esquivel- esque touches that are on Heroine, but i still enjoy it's crunchiness), Autour de Lucie's latest (hmmm...i'll have to give it more listens to figure out what the critics are talking about when they say that it's a different, more mature sound for them...i like it though), as well as an Ale Moller and Lena Willemark album (doesn't have the song i'm looking for though....how many albums do they have out as a duo). Did anyone know that not only are they using Paula Cole's latest single "Me" on Dawson's Creek, but they are also (at least according to TV Guide) using Eddi Reader and Sophie Zelmani (and meredith brooks)...there's a Jeer in this week's TV Guide about how they put up pictures of artists whose music they use on the show in the end credits and how they didn't put up a picture of meredith, but they did put up pictures of sophie and eddi. Dammit. I want a copy of Steve Poltz's One Left Shoe....we've only received the Silver Lining single at my radio station and have it in pretty heavy rotation...hey....is that jewel i hear...where....there, buried in the layers of harmony in the chorus....i dunno ;) Can someone tell me whether that is Madeleine Peyroux or Ella Fitzgerald they have singing in those car commercials now.....hmmmm As always, thanks Mr. BB for your info. Hi Larry. Nice to see you here too. I'm torn between wanting to watch the grammys and wanting to blow up the auditorium where they will be held...or at least rigging explosives to the chairs of the people who decide the nominees and vote on the winners. And the chairs of Hanson. A sedative for me, why thank you. I've realized recently that Big Audio Dynamite's album "The Globe" is a really great album...my first cd purchased was probably...hmm...something Mariah Carey-ish...my most embarrasing album owned is probably Michael Bolton's Time Love and Tenderness...the most embarrassiinnggg (geeze, i forget how to spell that word) cd i currently own is...umm...i dunno...i get rid of cds i don't like...although i do wish i had C&C Music Factory's cd Sweat Til You Bleed 'cuz i like it and that would probably be my most embarrasing cd to own...or maybe Vanilla Ice's album with Ice Ice Baby...man, i could listen to that song all day before i killed myself :) You people generate too much mail. They have two albums that have been released in the U.S. -- Agram, the latest, and Nordan. I personally like Nordan better--it's a little more melodic, but Agram has some beautiful, startling sounds on it--particularly on the song Bjornen, where Lena does this vocal interplay with a strange horn, and both noises are so piercing that it's hard to tell which is the voice nad which the horn. I actually saw her perform this in concert--it was the song they started the concert with, and despite the fact Lena was standing about 5 feet back from the microphone, I still jumped out of my chair when she first started singing with her powerful voice. > Dammit. I haven't even had a chance to hear the recording of the song-- but I used to love it when they performed it at the Inner Change (hard to belive that was literally years ago!) A long time ago, in a net far, far away, #ecto used to exist. The channel was a great place for people to meet, but had too many problems with 'elite hackers' playing power games for me... And here's some very interesting info. The new album will be called "Flaming Red" & it was officially finished (as in final mix) today! Hoot! Cheer! Patty said hopefully a June release. And speaking of releases, on April 28th a two CD set of Lilith Fair 98 will be released & does include Patty. Her contribution is a Lilith performance of "Cain". More info on Iron Horse setlist, etc, after a good nights sleep. Lookin forward to hookin up with more of you on Saturday in Somerville!
