I've got a tape by a Columbus, Ohio band called the Evolution Control Committee, who do Negativland-style tape manipulations. Somehow they got a hold of a Public Enemy record meant for DJ's which has only the vocal tracks of "By the Time I Get To Arizona" and other easy-listening favorites. Well anyway, they started played this PE platter at the same time as some records they had lying around, just to see if any of them fit together. One of those records they had was--you guessed it--"Whipped Cream and Other Delights," and they discovered that the songs "The Rhythm, The Rebel" and "Bittersweet Samba" fit together EXACTLY, from beginning to end. There's even an Alpert drum fill when Chuck D. yells, "Terminator X!" It's an amazing track. Maybe I'll put it on the next HBP... Altan was absolutely amazing! There's a reason so many fans of Irish traditional music consider Altan to be the greatest (modern) band in the genre... they are absolutely brilliant. I didn't see them perform live for the first time until after Frankie Kennedy had passed away, and I find it hard to actually imagine how glorious their live shows must have been when he was with them when I see how amazing they are these days. I'm a big fan of the flute and whistle in Irish trad, so the fact that I can be so utterly blown away by a band that doesn't have a flute player is always a surprise to me. Mairead's voice and fiddle playing were both spectacular, and when she and Ciaran Tourish were blazing away together on their fiddles in the classic Donegal style it was just breathtaking. The set was a fairly even split between songs and tunes, and though on their more recent cds I've preferred the tunes over the songs I still thought Mairead did a spectacular job. I think her voice just sounds better live than it does recorded. Anyway, if you're a fan of Irish trad, or just a dabbler on the edges of the whole "celtic" genre, I strongly urge you to catch Altan when they come to your town. You won't be disappointed. This thursday night I was in Denver, Colorado attending a company convention, and one of the "activities" was an outting to a local bar called "The Soiled Dove". While there I was most fortunate to listen to the band "Behan Jonhson", featuring Monica Behan and Deron Johson. Monica's singing and Deron's playing were most definitely ecto stuff, and, to me, they were awesomely good. In fact, I purchased their CD right there and then, and had it autographed by the two of them. I was just playing their CD on my computer's CD-ROM player (as I worked my way through 225 new e-mail messages...), and, I must say, they still sound as good as they sounded thrusday night in Denver. In fact, I think I will ditch e-mail reading and go put on the expensive Sennheisers and enjoy this disc once more. I was very lucky to be able to see Behan Johnson live, and to shake Monica's hand, while they are still relatively small in fame. But, if there should be a God (a figure of speech, of course), this band deserves to go all the way to the top. Check them out!
