WHO!?!? I know Suzanne's a Mom (she mentioned that in the album notes to Be Here Now). But who's she married to? Is it Vincent or one of the Hoopers? By the way, would anybody also happen to know if the "Tara" who babysat for Suzanne (according to the album notes, again) is Tara MacLean? She DOES sing backup on "Still with Me" on that album. Yes, it was a very good show despite the sound problems, which were basically just all of the guitars being unamplified. The lack of any amplification did sort of ruin the arrangement of the first song they performed, "The Mountain Streams Where the Moorcocks Crow", because when Chris applied his e-bow to the guitar all I could hear was a brief buzz as it first touched the string and then almost nothing. Kinda ruined the effect. For the rest of the show though I don't think the problems had much of an effect on the listening experience. The two standout songs for me were off of the new cd, "In London So Fair" and "Banks of Claudy". The performances of both were absolutely amazing. > _Bushes And Briars_ is a top-notch collection of traditional tunes from I'm actually not entirely in love with this CD after the first couple of listens. [waits for the gasps of amazement to die down] I love the songs with the simpler or more traditional arrangements, but some of the others just haven't clicked with me yet. I don't dislike them, but I think I need to get used to them. The most jarring example is the title track. I had heard Susan sing "Bushes & Briars" several times live without any accompaniment, so the version on the cd was a bit of a shock the first time I heard it because it was so different. To be honest, my first thought was, "Hey, this sounds kinda like a Loreena McKennitt song." So, I do like the cd, and love parts of it, but I'm not utterly blown away by it just yet. Once it's had time to grow on me a bit more I plan to write a more detailed review. When I was at the Lilith Fair II preview concert in December, I bought KK's _Jet_ CD, and at first listen it didn't grab me. I tossed it into my car's 12 CD changer (Xmas splurge ;) and hadn't given it a second thought. Yesterday morning, as I was driving to Home Depot to buy a hibiscus bush under which to bury my bunny rabbit who had suddenly died Saturday night at 11:30 (after about 2 hours of difficulty walking, then shortness of breath, then no breath at all - *sniff*), the disc clicked over from _The Dreaming_ to _Jet_, and I wasn't really paying attention to anything except my loss of my pet. But when the second track came on, the words "Lay me down in a wooded field, plant a bush above my head, lay me, lay me down" assaulted my senses. Granted, it's tough to say that a rabbit can have "One Hell of a Life," but it _was_ predator free, and that's about as good as it gets ;) So I continued my errand to plant a bush above his head, and have listened to that song over and over and over again for the past two days. I think _Jet_'s going to be a new favorite of mine. Steve Albini production certainly creates a memorable wall of sound, but we have already discussed this earlier. other artists to check out would be early THROWING MUSES, BREEDERS, 18TH DYE (which i once mixed up as an early BARBARA MANNING project, ha ha, i was thinking about 28TH DAY), early BREEDERS (and of course THE PIXIES who have a great 2CD retrospective out, DEATH TO THE PIXIES), early COCTEAU TWINS (GARLANDS), PALE SAINTS, LUSH (who i mentioned earlier, who i think are a step above curve and garbage), early VELOCITY GIRL, UNREST/AIR MIAMI (though i would avoid MARK ROBINSON'S solo project OLYMPIC DEATH SQUAD i thought it sounded like bad AIR MIAMI bsides), HEAVEN'S TO BETSY, and someone told me the most recent HEAVENLY album is suppose to be quite early LUSH-like in their guitar sound. interesting as LUSH's most recent album was quite POP sounding. maybe the demos were swapped at the studios, and no one noticed? anyway i just wanted to throw that in, and also ask competely out of context question. does anyone know when KYLIE MINOGUE's IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS album is suppose to be released in the US? her website was completely useless and out of date (though very nicely done). no one seems to have US release dates on their sites. it is very frustrating. perhaps ecto is not the appropriate venue to be asking, but hey, i feel anything goes here, and i am not ashamed of my utter bad taste in music. hey still own a CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT CD single (okay i don't listen to it, but still). which gets me wondering...what is the most embarrasing CD you ectophiles have ever bought? and are you still listening to it? what is the most embarrassing CD youare still listening to? just wondering. of course those of us that have no shame would not be embarrassed by anything we listen to. as it should be... and finally i am thinking of selling off a couple of early JEWEL promos (the SAVE THE LINOLEUM and PHYLLIS GETS A BRA/YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME cd's). what should i be asking for them? i'm just toying with the idea. okay that's it. it is good to be back on ecto at home. now you can get rambling messages from me, at my leisure, and you won't have that horrid long sig file. happy day. love irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 22:05:58 -0600 (CST) From: Michael Curry Subject: Merrie Amsterburg (fwd) - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 14:28:44 -0500 From: Jessica Smyser Subject: Merrie Amsterburg Hello all, Here are the dates for February... * Saturday,February 14 The Stone Church - Newmarket, NH w/ Thanks To Gravity * * Saturday, February 21 The Middle East - Cambridge, MA w/ Cake Like, Mary Timony & Laurie Geltman. 617-864-EAST This show is a benefit for Teen Voices Magazine. I think I overheard that the one in SF is not allowed to do shows for some reason. Is that true? Good for me I suppose!! Now on with the show.... To cut to the quick, she was disappointing. I had enjoyed her album and was looking forward to the show. Her guitar playing sounded routine and uninspiring. And her voice, while interesting, jsut wasn't enough to hold my interest. And the lyrics, which interesting on album seemed sorta silly and lightweight live. Maybe a second rate Ani wannabe. Wish I could give her a better review. Maybe I was expecting too much. Or maybe she was just blown away by the opener!! Chris Stills is the perfect fill-in-the-void spot for Jeff Buckley. Son of CSNY's, Stephen Stills, this guy has the chops. A beautiful voice (and this from one who generally doesn't like male singers) and some creative guitar work. I didn't buy the album but I will in the very near future. (EWS lives!) To anyone who fell in love with Jeff, I would highly recommend at list giving Chris a listen. I didn;t hear the album, so I don;t know what the production is like, but if it like him live, it should be amazing. His voice ranges from a bluesy near-growl to a high and pure wave. I don;t remeber any of the names of the songs except for the one NOT on the album, Jezebel. A little trite on the name, and possibly the theme though he does take things in different directions and from different viewpoints (at least to my experience.) Take a listen! Enjoy! What's funny is that the term "wall of sound" predated MBV by about 20 years, when it was used to refer to Phil Spector's work. OTOH, I'd never heard it used before in the context of referring to the questionable technique of burying vocals behind blurry guitars. (Back in the day, we used to call that "incompetent mixing".:-]) > which gets me wondering...what is the most embarrasing CD you > ectophiles have ever bought? and are you still listening to it? what > is the most embarrassing CD youare still listening to? just wondering. > of course those of us that have no shame would not be embarrassed by > anything we listen to. as it should be... Hrmm... what would be the most embarassing, if it weren't actually a pretty good record (and if LPs count -- dunno if it's on CD), is Sean Cassidy's _Wasp_. Other than that, perhaps Cher's Greatest Hits. - -- - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ===== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Maryland? = <*> SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List <*> = ecto \|| |/ http://www.realtime.net/~jzitt ====== Comma: Voices of New Music \| ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #43 *************************
