Maybe she may have a part-time employee or friend to help out, but she doesn't have anything like a staff yet. I know from comments she made at her concert that she's still her own manager, so she has to make all the travel and booking arrangements for herself and her band members. She's been touring a lot and is taking some time out to rest and recuperate and do some songwriting on one of the Gulf Islands. I'm betting that she just has a backlog. When I ordered from her in the fall it took about 4 or 5 weeks. Getting the cds from her may be part of the delay with A&B Sound, too. When I talked to them, they said they had sold all their copies of Spine, and that they were having a hard time getting ahold of new ones. So I guess it's not their fault, though I'm still tempted to change my order to somewhere else that might actually have the discs in stock. (I still dislike how they don't tell you that the discs aren't available.) Music of the weekend. Last night I saw Jen Trynin at Iota in Arlington. Good crunchy rock show, though I felt like it suffered from the same problems as the last time I saw her, a few years ago at the 9:30 Club. I bought the latest album at the show, and have only listened to Cockamamie a few times, so I don't really know her music. But live, I can't pick any of the lyrics out of the songs. My heads bobbing, my feet are tapping, and I'm enjoying the show, but I'd love to be able to discern the lyrics. Afterwards I swung by the Black Cat on the way home. SInce it was 10 to 1, they were kind enough to let me in without paying the cover. I'd have happily paid for the last 15 minutes of Magnetic Fields set, and the 25 minute encore that they played. It was the first time I've seen them live, and I thought they were incredible. Completely opposite Jen Trynin, in that virtually every lyric shown through perfectly. And I thought Stephin Merrit's voice sounded wonderful. Live, it was actually smoother and more resonant than on the little bit of recorded material I've heard, and I love his wit and songwriting. The band was having a good time, joking around and making impromptu decisions on the songs to be played. I was really pleased to not only see a cello in the band, but to hear it used to such good effect. I wasn't sure what I'd think of the band live, but they far exceeded my expectations. I'm only sorry I wasn't there in time for Momus' opening set, and that they didn't have cd's for sale, since I'd have bought a handful. I don't have the album myself; I only managed to listen to some of it the last time I was at Borders. It was on one of their listening stations, but there were no more copies available. Anybody here have a review of the album, _Growing Pains_? I'm probably going to go pick it up if I can find it at a decent price. Comparing her voice to the singer from Sponge is interesting... I must admit that never even occurred to me. Of course, that's because from the moment I heard Kiss the Rain, I knew exactly who it was that was singing... Except that I was wrong. To me, Billie Myers sounds exactly like the singer Ke, whose 95 album, I Am [ ], is one of my personal favorites. To this day, though, I still think that Billie Myers is Ke with a wig on... - Tony ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Feb 1998 00:11:54 -0500 From: meredith Subject: new music Hi! Last night Susan McKeown did her first performance of the year, up at the Roaring Brook Nature Center in rural Canton, CT. She had Lindsey Horner and Chris Cunningham with her. Despite some serious sound problems in the first set that led them to turn off the microphones that were working altogether (it didn't really matter, the room was so small), it was a good show. They did several Chanting House favorites, as well as "Through The Bitter Frost and Snow" (with the requisite killer bass work by Lindsey :), and a few from Susan's new album of traditional Celtic tunes, _Bushes and Briars_, which will be officially released by Alula Records on the 17th of this month. Fortunately, she had a bunch with her for sale last night. :) _Bushes And Briars_ is a top-notch collection of traditional tunes from the Irish, Scottish, and English musical lexicons, and Susan has gotten a list of heavy hitters to join her, including Johnny Cunningham, Seamus Egan, Andy Irvine, and Jerry O'Sullivan. Her gorgeous voice soars above it all, and she employs non-traditional instruments (bass, tabla, tambura, bassoon, even tuba :) in such a way that the songs sound fresh and new, yet they're undeniably trad tunes. I highly recommend this album to all fans of Susan's music, as well as to fans of Celtic music. (I'm sure by now nobody is believing either me or Mike when we rave about Susan's music, so I'm hoping somebody else will step up and support me on this one soon... :) Another new album I've been digging quite a bit lately is Tanya Donnelly's _Lovesongs for Underdogs_. Tasty power-pop that stays crunchy in milk. :) I don't know why, but it latched onto my brain and won't let go. There are some songs that sound like they fell off a Belly album, and others that sound like Throwing Muses cutouts. It's great driving music. Also spending a lot of time in the CD player lately is the debut album by Emer Kenny, which I've seen mentioned here once or twice. She's basically the Irish Julee Cruise, and although I don't really like Julee Cruise much, I'm finding this album great background music for e-mail and the like. Which usually isn't a compliment, but in this case I think it is. :) I still haven't picked up Kristin Hersh's new one, but I plan to rectify that this week. Also, Righteous Babe Records will be sending out Ani DiFranco's new one, _Little Plastic Castle_ to the folks who pre-ordered it this week, yay. :) I think I'm the only person on the Ani mailing list who hasn't managed to get their hands on an advance copy of it yet, so I've been going nuts hearing about it. I think it's time to clear out my ecto mailbox, too -- next post! :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Feb 1998 00:23:58 -0500 From: meredith Subject: something hilarious for the ani fans :) Hi! I saw this posted to the Ani DiFranco list, and it was so hilarious I just had to share. Even if you've never heard a note of her music, you'll definitely find this funny. Someone put the lyrics to her song "Out Of Habit" into the AltaVista translator, I think into Italian, and then back into English. Here are the results. I've been trying to disbelieve that the last time I heard Susan perform was a Fez gig the summer of 1995 that was supposed to be the CD release party for Bones ... She then went on to much more eloquently than I could describe/comment on Susan's newest album of unaccompanied - and minimally accompanied - traditional songs. which she wound up with: >... (I'm sure by now nobody >is believing either me or Mike when we rave about Susan's music, so I'm >hoping somebody else will step up and support me on this one soon... :) I've had the copy of Bushes & Briars for nearly a week now, and haven't had enough time to listen to it as much as I'd like to. Meth's comments are no exaggeration - either about Susan's live performances or this album. (I admit that one of my favourite concert presentations - back in '95 - was when Susan began with Gorm and segued into Westron Wynde - from the traditional to the more contemporary.) Actually, her recently released recording ventures have really displayed the wide pallette of her voice (bad analogy, but its Sunday nite :-). The voicing she has explored on the "Soul of Christmas" and "Peter and Wendy" are kind of like different, um, places in her vocal personality. Pretty amazing! If you like more traditional music, where the vocals are a major instrument in the mix, with the lyrics expressing still-contemporary emotions, but in older, sometimes more simple and somewhat more eloquent ways (when I can understand them in English ), you'll love the new album. ... but, of course, disclaimer here ... I tracked Susan's music down from Chicago by a Drovers connection (she did some guesting with them awhile back), and was so entranced by her music when I heard her in April of '95 that I went on to design & host her website ... for the music ... so, I'm hardly unbiased .
