Happy's albums have never been easy to find and since she hasn't had a new release in a while they're even harder to track down. The local Tower Records, which used to keep her full catalogue no seems to only keep one or two discs in stock at a time, and the University branch is usually out of stock completely. With any luck this will change with the new release and there will be renewed interest in her back catalogue. These albums are too great for them just to disappear into oblivion. Damn, she's good. I'm glad that we have a routine where we listen to Happy first thing every Saturday morning. It means that no matter what particular cds I'm obsessing on at the moment, I'm continually reminded why Happy remains one of my most favourite artists. There I am, usually more than half-asleep, and I hear Happy's voice seeping into my consciousness. It's a wonderful moment. There have been a couple of mentions of Sleater-Kinney on ecto, but since the punk-rock contingent here is relative small there hasn't been that much buzz about them. Estwhile ectophile Don Keller is a huge fan, and I know there are others out there who like them. Living in Seattle, so close to where the band hail from, there has been a lot of buzz both critical and popular about them, though I wouldn't say they were anywhere near overexposed yet. I think they're one of the most interesting bands in that genre around but my interest in the genre as a whole is limited--I like it but connect with it only rarely these days. I highly recommend them to anyone interested in post-grunge punk or whatever they're calling it these days. Going into Seattle is thought of as more of a "trip" (although "tripping" can be just what the doctor ordered at times). Speaking of music, British Columbia, and personal idiosyncracies, and allowing myself a minute of bragging, it is because of my habit of going into Canada for music (and perhaps also because of having some "friends" thereabouts) that I own the canadian version of Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing album with the paper/cardboard sleeve (different front the US packaging) and with her autograph right smack on it. Sometimes it is good to expand your horizons and cross a boundary or two. :) At any rate, I shall add getting one of Happy's discs to my list of things to do in Seattle, and thus make the trip soon. "Bruce recently contributed to a very special tribute CD, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone--The Songs of Pete Seeger". This celebration of Pete Seeger will be, without a doubt, the highlight of the Appleseed catalogue -- if the not the album of the year. Eventually, the collection will include three volumes dedicated to a man who has been a crucial part of American music and American history. Volumes one and two will include new recordings from Billy Bragg, Greg Brown, Jackson Browne, Bruce Cockburn, Judy Collins, Guy Davis, Ani DiFranco, Nanci Griffith, Richie Havens, Tish Hinojosa, the Indigo Girls, Roger McGuinn, Holly Near, Odetta, Tom Paxton, Peter Paul & Mary, Bonnie Raitt, Tim Robbins, Martin Simpson, Studs Terkel, Tim Robbins and many more. The CD will be out on February 19, 1998, in the US and Canada. Jim Musselman Appleseed Records tells me that: ...For the Seeger CD Bruce did a great version of "Turn,Turn,Turn". He did a new arrangement and put the Cockburn signature on the song. The Cockburn cut is very special. A rumoured concert coinciding with the release of the new CD will be held in New York at Carnagie Hall.
