Who is Mila Mason? Heh. I knew all those hours spent listening to country music would help me someday. :) Mila Mason had a hit on country stations with "Dark Horse", as well as another song that is escaping my brain at the moment. She's part of the latest wave of Nashville hitmakers -- they have one or two hits, and then are never heard from again. One-hit wonders may be common on the pop charts (especially in recent years), but until lately, Nashville seems to have been spared this particular brand of hell. > I like compilations since they allow me to sample a lot of artists without > having to buy an entire CD of each one. Kind of like my own in-house > listening station. ;-) I find compilations really annoying -- I buy them for one or two songs, then don't like the other 10 songs. So I'm stuck with a CD that I can't be bothered listening to. I'd much rather sample artists by buying CDs blindly based on ecto suggestions - -- it's more expensive, but more productive in the long run. ==> Valerie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 09:45:57 -0500 (EST) From: Magenta <4dm@qlink.queensu.ca> Subject: Re: Compilations For Canadian Ectophiles: Try Nettwerk Records' compilation albums. As a bonus, these full-length samplers cost about half as much as regular CDs. Slowbrew is a good example. My parents called me after the game to ask me about her, and to ask for a tape of her stuff. I guess she made a few new fans with that gig. :) This would be nice is Jewel actually sang the National Anthem. They used a tape. She came in late with "O Say Can You See." It was insulting. I was looking forward to seeing Jewel sing, and was angry that NBC decided to do it that way. Anyone else have comment? >> Sure, I'll jump in. I've sung the National Anthem (a capella!) at two KC Royals baseball games. Both performances were pre-recorded at a recording studio. They (the Royals organization, and probably most other professional sports organizations) do not allow "live" performances because it is just a nightmare waiting to happen. Stage fright (even among the best professionals) seems to follow that song around like a shadow. People forget lyrics, and even in the best of circumstances, it is a difficult song to sing. Even though I did actually sing my little heart out (rather than lip synch) nobody heard it because the mic was not live. The person who coordinates these things for the organization rehearsed the announcer's cues with a visual cue for me. It was very tightly counted and the instructions were very specific as to when to come in. They even go so far as to do a wide shot on the Jumbo Tron until after the song has started so that no one can really see if you miss the cue. I missed Jewell's performance, although I did catch the game (Wotta game!!). Keep in mind that the audio feed and the video feed are often way out of synch on these things. And she could have thought she was right on the mark according to what she was hearing. When I did it, there were no stage monitors, only the loudspeakers to synch to. This in itself creates a problem. Sooooo...even though I didn't actually witness it, I would be inclined to be on the forgiving side of that particular performance. Jewel has sung the US national anthem at least one other time, at an Orioles game in Baltimore...er...almost 3 years ago. Neal Copperman was there. Earlier in the day, she did a great in-studio at WHFS (back when they were cool enough to care about her) and talked about having problems remembering some of the lyrics. In a later interview at HFS some months later, she talked at some length about singing the song live in Camden Yards. this doesn't have all that much bearing on what happened at the game yesterday, but seemed worth pointing out. both interviews with Jewel were available on the "Radio Angels" compilation put together by our own Dan Stark and tree'd on the Jewel list (before it became unreadable... ;-) thanks for relating your experiences...pretty cool! jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 17:19:17 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Jewel & the big game On Mon, 26 Jan 1998, jeffrey c. burka wrote: > Jewel has sung the US national anthem at least one other time, at an > Orioles game in Baltimore...er...almost 3 years ago. Just what I was going to say :) I went down to where she was sitting behind home plate and talked to her before the performance. SHe was really nervous, and had written notes on her hand to help her out. Turns out that the lyrics are scrolled across the scoreboard anyway, so it wasn't necessary. SHe also said that the echo was a killer. But she did indeed sing that one. What's even nicer, is that you can ask them to go ahead and ship what they have (by agreeing to pay another postage charge on the backorer) or you can just cancel the backorder. That's pretty handy, but then you miss out talking to all those friendly perky Canadians that answer the phone there. The woman I talked to even put me on hold while she ran to wherever to grab the new Veda for me and verify it was indeed what I was looking for. Course, now it's sitting in a pile all by itself waiting for my other discs to come in. Not knocking A&B Sounds, but is there anywhere else to mail order this stuff that can get it faster?
