I make the slightest comment about some rap singer and people jump all over me, then I see stuff like this... you people suck.. Speaking of sucking, I actually bought a CD on recommendation from the list and it didn't suck.. surprise, surprise. Anyway, it was Lisa Cerbone's Mercy, and now that I hear it, it sounds really familiar. I've either heard it on the radio, or there's someone else that sounds a lot like her. ++ -dave- ++ + irc.dal.net #Panic_Beach + + Maria McKee/Grey Eye Glances/Lisa Loeb + + Lisa Loeb/Lisa Loeb/Lisa Loeb + ++ ++ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 12:50:43 -0500 (EST) From: jason and jill Subject: Re: ecto-digest V4 #11 On Sun, 11 Jan 1998, sspan wrote: > Sarah. Most of them wouldn't say anything bad about even an act as dreadful as those "Spread your wings and fly" hacks. Can't help it though...I almost sprained my arm yesterday in my speed to change the radio station before one of Ms. Loeb's dire, earnest little whineathons had a chance to get started. ;) Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 13:28:58 EST From: RISSARO Subject: Re: INDIE STORES IN CHICAGO HI, I"m a big fan of indie stores too: they're usually cheaper (carry used), more personal, have the hard-to-find stuff, and have a large variety. There are some excellant stores in Chicago that I feel are worth mention when talking about indie stores. Some include: Reckless Records, Dr. Wax, 2nd Hand Tunes, and Disc Go Round. Any more? So if you live here now, or ever travel here, check these places out! ~Marissa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 16:34:29 -0500 From: Greg Nesbitt Subject: Rochester area indie stores The best indie music store in the Rochester NY area that I've run across is Lakeshore Record Exchange on Monroe. Huge $3 table, reasonably large used section, and lots of unusual things that just aren't likely to appear at the local Borders'. Plus, the help is generally ecto-knowledgable, which helps :) In fact, since I've found this place, I think I've only been to Media Play (the local trendy chain) once, and that was only because I couldn't wait for Lakeshore to order what I was looking for (needed it that day). The Great Great House of Guitars, despite all the hype, has never thrilled me. They have a large used CD selection, but rarely if ever do I find anything even worth mentioning. Lots of 80's pop. :( Any other recommendations in Western/Central NY? Probably the best bets near you are Streetlight Records and Rasputin's Records (unless Rasputin's is now considered a chain - I think they only have two stores). Both of these are located in Campbell. About a 15 mile drive from Palo Alto. Rasputin's has a much better selection as it is larger, but Streetlight is nearby and definitely worth checking out. Both of these stores have locations elsewhere. Rasputin is also in Berkeley. Streetlight, as someone else pointed out, is in SF as well. If you need information on their actual locations (the Cambell stores) please email me. I'd be glad to help out. - -Rodney - ------------------------------------------------------------------- Rodney Somerstein | Meditation... it's not what you think. rodneys@bayarea.net | | Outside of a dog, a man's best friend | is a book. It is still just a giant building of crap and boxes dumped all over the place? My favorite store was across the street from the Wegmans by campus (UR). I think it was Record Archive. I'm not trying to start a flame war here, just wondering why > the lack of tolerance? > Smiles, :) Having tolerance means not suggesting that the fans of artist you consider to be crap to be crap themselves. Music is a matter of personal taste and, despite what pop culture tries to tell you, "good" taste in music doesn't make someone a good person. I say this in complete seriousness and honesty: Hitler had great taste in music. If someone gave me a radio station on the condition that the programming had to be decided by an historical figure, Adolph would be my program manager. A Bach cantana to start the day, followed by Mozart, a Bruckner symphony to chill to after dinner, and some Schubert lieder before bedtime. Of course, he'd be longing for a train to ship me off on. I don't associate anything with anyone who may be a Lisa Loeb fan. I'd just rather have my teeth cleaned than go to a concert of hers. Some people get locked into arguments such as "X is crap, and you're an idiot for liking X," in which case a real flame war gets going. This is generally along the "TV-fed idiots like Hanson" line of argument. I think Lisa Loeb's music is yack dung. That doesn't mean I think any less of someone who thinks otherwise. That's tolerance. Tolerance doesn't mean never stating a negative opinion. Welcome to ecto. You must be new, as we just covered this topic in excruciating and annoying detail less than a month ago. Here is a summary. Tolerance is a good thing. Saying nice things about music is good. Saying only nice things about music is boring and completely uninformative. If someone says something less than nice about the music you like, you shouldn't get offended. Defend your musical taste, but remember, it's all a matter of opinion. If it helps, remember that the other guy is an idiot (but don't tell them that). neal np: Malicorne - le bestierie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 23:04:47 -0500 From: Marcel Kshensky <"mundopax@mundopax"@ingress.com> Subject: Lunar Landing Hi ECTO folk, This may be of interest to no one but me, but hey, what the hell. . . I've just finished listening to three albums, which, by accident all have "moon" in their titles: 1. Kim Fox's "Moon Hut," 2. Emily Bezar's "Moon in Grenadine," and 3. Michelle Malone's "beneath the devil moon." So I find myself comparing the three. Bezar's album's the weakest. The Fox and Malone CD's are both excellent. But I think I like Malone's a tad better. Her songs are more memorable, although I really like Fox's too. I know the moon has always been a symbol for feminine forces, with its special influence over the earth's waters. Alright, so maybe you don't care, but I think it's a cool coincidence. Dirt Cheap hadn't really had a whole lotta stuff I was interested in lately, but they've long been a decent source for promo singles (usually at a buck a piece, the ones I liked, at least...Dar Williams, Catie Curtis, and Joy Askew, among them). I tend to find a fair bit of ectoish music at the downtown location of a small local chain, Homer's (I think they still advertise with "Worldwide Chain of Four"). It's where I first found Happy. The one, true, new and used, indie store downtown, is the basement of the areas largest used book store, the Antiquarium. They've a large selection of indie labels; but then, you'd kinda expect that from a place with "Corporate Rock Sucks" stickers plastered all over. - - - - - - - - - - Felix Strates Got me singing along with panflx@earthlink.net some half-hearted victory song --Elliot Smith, "Rose Parade" - - - - - - - - - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 00:23:56 -0600 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Lunar Landing Marcel Kshensky wrote: >1. Emily Bezar's album is the weakest of the three? Not the strangest and most experimental but the _weakest_? Are the other two albums in the same general genre? I've seen their names of couple of times (here I think) but I don't know anything about them. I imagine it's damn powerful music if it makes Emily Bezar's album seem weak. Marcel, you're going to have to tell me more about them. Descriptions, please. You might also be interested to know that "Moon Hut" likely refers to the tribal practice of women retiring to a separate hut during the time of they are menstruating.
