So I called SHeeba and ordered Speckless Sky (to replace the tape) and Day in the Life. For a few moments I wondered if everyone at Sheeba sounded exactly like Jane, before I realized that it was indeed Jane taking my order. We talked a bit, and she told me that she had shut down the Sheeba offices until they could find a way to settle the debts they had incurred. She is running the reduced operations single handedly right now. There will be no more mailings or postcards in the near future, although there may still be an e-mail notification on occasion. She will be taking orders through (approximately) the end of the month, though won't be filling them until mid-January. Then, everything will be shut down until the start of the zodiacal year (apparently that's march). It may be possible to place orders in that time frame too, though they will probably be filled slowly. She wants to keep at least that part going, since it's all about getting the music out there. So, if anyone has been toying with the idea of getting any of Jane's discs, this would be an excellent time to do it. Consider it a holiday present to Jane. You can order them by calling 1-888-3Sheeba, or from the web site at www.sheeba.ca (I imagine they are still being filled on line.) Plus, you'll get the added bonus of talking to Jane. What woj wrote, I could have written myself. I haven't heard the second 2 albums, but liked Blue Nile and Jazz Butcher (never have really heard of Spirtiualized, nor knew they had anything to do with Jazz Butcher). Anyway, I bought the Fibbers first album, and really liked the song... whose name I'm currently spacing, Richard? about cutting off heads and fish spilling out. Overall that album was a little hit and miss for me. Based on your accolades, I picked up Butch, and also found it a little hit or miss, but do like the song Trashman in Furs a lot. I think it would definitely grow on me if I listened to it more, but to be honest I haven't listened to it enough to grow past the "some of these songs are kind of noisy and annoying" stage, which on repeated listenings, I would probably get used to the noise and start focusing on the music. I've always loved Bozulich's vocals though. They're a band I always really want to like, would love to see live, but are just a little noisier than most of the stuff I usually feel like listening to. Ex-SPACEMAN 3 group, i hear that LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE is brilliant. of course being as it has only been released for a couple of months, i would think you could chalk up the high rating on your list charley for novelty sake. same goes with LAIKA. both CD's were good when i had a few initial spins, but on the whole didn't have much staying power. granted i have yet to really listen to them (my coworkers brought them in, i don't own them) but my initial reactions was not quite as encapturing as yours. of the two SPIRITUALIZED probably had more staying power though. on the other hand, i have to agree with most of the press out there, and disagree with CHARLEY the new BJORK CD is brilliant. better than POST (which i didn't find all that interesting anyway). i do not own it either, but listened to at the studio with a classmate of mine way into the wee hours. While there is a core group of artists all Ectophiles seem to enjoy, at some point we diverge. And, some of us diverge more than others. For me, it happens in cycles. Last year, my Top 10 list was very Ectophilic. But this year, there will probably be a lot of CDs on my list that most folks on this list won't ever pick up, let alone consider masterpieces like I do. And, that's OK. Like you, I'm just not very aligned with the Ecto mainstream this year. At least I know Ecto is a place where diverse opinions are accepted and even expected. I started with _jubilee twist_ so I still like that one a little better, though _cleopatra grip_ is also quite good. They remind me somewhat of Elysian Fields, or some early Belly (_Star_, particularly tracks like "Dusted"). Somehow I like the psuedo-surreal, emotionally charged lyrics of all of these groups. I originally got a tape of _jubilee twist_ from someone on the Loreena McKennitt list, and loved it. I searched and found used copies of _jubilee twist_ and _cleopatra grip_, and just today I ordered their 1993 release of _Vertical Smile_ with the bonus CD (which may actually be the _cleopatra grip_ cd as the bonus, based on web rumors). Your mileage may vary, but I thought it was one of the best films I've ever seen. There was even some nice ecto-y music, including a song by Celine Dion (?) that sounded a tad enyaesque. There wasn't a dry eye in the theater (or on the boat, for that matter). People have complained about the plot, but focusing on the one love story made the film work for me. It bought the whole thing to a personal, human level. My son Richard, however, said the plot was full of holes. (He's the guy who does stand-up). Anyway, for what it's worth, I loved it. Robert of Jersey PS - I love ecto, and though I'm more of a lurker than I used to be, I'm happily still here. I don't know a thing about spacemen 3 or spiritualized. Can someone elaborate? I'm not on the web, so have to resort to the "old fashioned" > snail mail. :-) A good source for all things Canadian is A&B Sounds in Vancouver. THis is one of those rare weeks I am in possession of their phone number: 1-800-663-0596. I called and ordered a few Veda albums just last week. There's a one page interview with Sarah McLachlin in the latest Details magazine. It's got far more info than I think I really want to know about Sarah (a sample of info I didn't really need to know follows, so you may want to quit reading now.) She farts a lot, and she reveals whether she "spits or swallows". So, there you have it. Run to the store and read a copy, or not. Here I am! I've just gotten my computer back up and running, after being computerless since August. (!!!!) The first thing I did earlier when I was again able to access my D drive (my C was totally trashed) was to update the Happy FAQ (and give it a new look, which I'm playing around with). I apologise to you and everyone else that it's been so woefully out-of-date for so long. It really couldn't be helped though. I still have some more details to work on, but the really important stuff is there now.
