(fwd) [jason and jill Subject: Recent aquisitions 'philes, For what it's worth, some of my thoughts on recent CD purchases that I haven't commented on yet. I see others do this, and I enjoy reading them a great deal. Apologies in advance for any multiple "=20"s that show up. Like any typical tech writer, I edit myself way too much for my own good while writing on the fly... It take a very fine pen to write on a fly I'll have you know. ===================================================== Bjork _Homogenic_ - I agree pretty much with the majority of reactions I've read here. Bjork has that special talent that makes her music a must-hear. While it is nice to see that young bjork is alive and well, this album at times is just a tad, well, too alive for these old ears. :) A little overdone on the noise machines, but the majority of the album more than makes up for the parts that I can't listen to all the way through sometimes. My favorite Bjork album, one of my all-time favorites from anybody for that matter, remains _Debut_. Tanya Donelly _Lovesongs For Underdogs_ - Well, my verdict is in. I thank you ectophiles for your feedback on Tanya and especially on her other work. Looks like I have some Belly CDs to buy... Coming from someone who hadn't really heard a lot of Tanya Donelly, I enjoy _LFU_ very much! I don't even mind "Goat Girl", in fact, I think it's cute. :-) I agree that "Manna" and "Swoon" are great cuts. The woman is very talented, and that voice of hers is just toooo sweet... I'd give it four bongloads easy, and a hearty recommendation. Beth Orton _Trailer Park_ - This one took a month to grow on me, too, but boy, after all is sung and done, this is one of my favorite discs currently and no doubt will remain so. So many good songs on this album. I just *knew* that she had to have been influenced by the great Nick Drake, and sure enough, later on I learned that this is so. It's interesting how often I'm playing this CD. Highly ectoly-recommended by this poor boy. Vicky Pratt-Keating _Blue Apples_ - I went and got this CD after reading an article in a local paper for a show that she was going to be doing. Kate Bush and Nanci Griffith were listed as comparisons, I guess in terms of describing her voice. She sounds like Nanci at times, and the music is her own, but overall the CD didn't grab me much. I enjoy the first two songs; the second one, "n.y. 10/11/91" is especially nice. Very sad, but nice. There are some other moments here and there that show VP-K is talented, her songs are ok, but too fairly generic. Jill Sobule _Happy Town_ - I got this as an impulse buy when I noticed a promo copy for cheap. Having enjoyed _Things Here are Different_ and how Todd produced her, I was less than satisfied with this one. Even after many plays at first, it is one of those in the collection that isn't played very often. I still think Jill has lots more pretty darn good music in her, though, and I remain a big fan. Donnette Thayer _Chaos and Wonder_ - Heh, I'm hardly one to give an unbiased review of Donnette Thayer. Donnette's voice is one of the prettiest I've ever heard. She's one of the few, similarly to Happy, and say, Kate, who uses her voice as an instrument as much as any other in a song. I'd recommend this to any fan of lovely creative 'fantastyc' music that you can take a trip on. I feel like I've heard "Bali Hai" somewhere before, but not this sensually. Other standouts for me include "Earthly Powers," "Make it Now," "My Room," "Lemon Tree Home Away." The song "Gabriel," to me, has the feel of a classic. Don't buy this album on my recommendation; it just wouldn't be fair. :) Larry (alundra@flash.net) "Meth in the desert?? A couple of weeks ago I finally saw Susan McKeown play at Berkeley's Freight and Salvage coffeehouse. It was a Sunday night show (the night after I went and saw Pearl Jam and the Rolling Stones - how's that for a contrast) and the turnout was disappointing, to say the least. I don't think there were more than 40 people there, max. On stage were Susan McKeown, Lindsey Horner, and a new guitarist whose name I didn't catch. I don't think I'm ready to call them my *favorites*, but I liked the show and would make some effort to see them again next time they're on this coast. Susan's voice was fabulous, and Lindsey Horner was way way cool. I think I would actually make more effort to see him perform again than I would her, though she was good. If they play here together again, so much the better. I did purchase Through the Bitter Frost and Snow, but admit that I haven't listened to it yet because I can't make myself take Project Lo and the Barenaked Ladies out of the CD player, and if I could, I would have to put in Reel Big Fish or the Cherry Poppin Daddies since I just saw them play a fabulous show last week. Rough life here in the Bay Area, no? It would be hard to make me miss Alaska too much, I think... Anyhow, back to the Susan/Lindsey/? show. Due to the new guitarist, the set list was pretty fixed, so I did not get to hear Salome after I asked Susan if they could play it. Oh well. We did get a somewhat impromptu rendition of "Blue Moon" when guitar strings broke and had to be replaced. When I spoke to them at intermission I mentioned that I was there becuase of all the great press they got on "ecto", and Susan mentioned meth and woj and Neile and Jeff Wasilko by name as wonderful persons she has met from ecto. Thought you'd wanna know she thinks of y'all even when in California. Keep the ecto recommendations coming! (Better yet... send Happy Rhodes over this way! Apologies if someone else has already mentioned this, as I'm a bit behind on my ecto-mail... I have been hearing Loreena McKennitt on not one, but TWO very commercial San Francisco Bay Area stations this week! Live 105 (the "modern rock" station) is playing her as "best new music", and I noticed that Alice (a woman-oriented semi-"alternative" commercial station) is also playing her. Is she on corporate radio in the rest of the country, too? Oh, the track I heard on Alice yesterday was The Mummers Dance. In other Loreena "sightings", I recently attended a Momix dance performance of their piece "Baseball" (very cool modern dance stuff) and one of the bits was named "Prospero's Pitch" and was set to... you guessed it... "Prospero's Speech" by Loreena McKennitt. Other music used by Momix included Dead Can Dance ("Bird"), Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors, Baka Beyond, Yello, Bruce Odland, and Ali Farka Toure. It was a most interesting afternoon. So... is Loreena in the mainstream now? I never made it to Flying Saucer, and phantasmogoria was a bust too. but i found a few CDs here and there, the best place being HIGH TEC, a stereo equipment repair place, that also sold used CD's! found the KOSTARS ( side project of LUSCIOUS JACKSON) for $7 as well as as OLYMPIC DEATH SQUAD (mark robinson's 1996 solo project, from AIR MIAMI and UNREST, does anyone know what the situation is with AIR MIAMI, are they putting anything out soon?), THE HIGH (low key baggy manchester band from the 90's which is out of print) and PEE SHY (indie pop, WOJ you would like them, if you don't already know them). not bad. also picked up KIM FOX (of lilith fair third stage fame) which i listened to once, and didn't absorb that much. i will most likely listen to it closer and then perhaps post something. anyway DC would have been much more fun if the METRO ran after midnight. but alas, it does not, and driving around DC was hell. what is with all those annoying circles, and one way and dog earring streets? ah well. First welcome RENEE. i think from your list of singers/songwriters, you would like ANI's music, definitely check out LIVING IN CLIP which, granted, is a double CD, but i think is her best to date. she really needs to be seen live to be understood. and that CD really hits the sparks, and energy of her music. second NEAL you better get on the ball with the ANI editing, her new CD is due out january or february i think, and that means you will be 2 CDs behind! :) the title escapes me but it has the words PLASTIC CASTLE in it. ANI can be found on the cover of the new ADVOCATE magazine by the way, in case anyone is interested in that. average article, but they did give a little information about her new album. third congratulations to RACHEL. you have a nice top five list. what were the CD's that PULSE said you would like? just wondering. and that is it. thank goodness the holidays are over. i made it the extended family reunion, a day trip to NYC (well FLUSHING really), and eating lots of chinese food (not a turkey, stuffing or pumpkin pie in sight! :( but there is always christmas i guess).... and you all's thanksgiving? did anyone do anything special for DAY WITHOUT ART? thanks all love irvin np: nothing. i was contemplating putting GOTHIC ARCHIES (another stephin merritt side project) but i think i shall just go home instead. nr: ADA or ADOR a family chronicle by VLADMIR NABAKOV. Some of you were there but for the benefit of the rest, here goes..... Members of Jewel's list & many San Diego artists planned a major Thanksgiving week get-together attended by many from all over North America. The various gigs which included Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Tara MacLean, Jewel Kilcher(in a surprise appearance playing all new & obscure material), Elizabeth Hummel, Gregory Page, John Castro (of The Rugburns in a debut solo set) & Joy Eden Harrison culminated in Saturday nights Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra performance. I knew it was gonna be a great night & I sure wasn't dissipointed & was thoroughly blown away several times during the course of the set. Randy Hoffman & Chris Davies are both incredible musicians & provide fascinating enhancements to CLB's already colorful songs. All the album material is still just as incredible live if not more so. A lot of CLB's newer keyboard material has now been arranged for GO (Garage Orchestra) & its a very beautiful thing! Unlike the previous GO gigs of a few years back when they primarily played the album, now they have enough addditional material to easily play twice as long. The Java Joe's set was almost 2.5 hours. Other than "7th Son" & "Etude", the entire album was resurrected. Possibly due to "cult & alien" activity in the area that day, "Follow The Sun" & "UFO Suite" were both incredible! The "avante garde" sequence in the middle of UFO was unbelievable live & came complete with alien noises, barnyard animals & radio signals all emanating from various toys on the stage. Randy Hoffman's 9 year old daughter Tori was a crucial element during this particular sequence on violin. They recieved a well deserved mid song ovation during this, too. Those here that know me, know I have a big thing for "Aquamarine" & thats now a full blown pop song with great harmony vocals supplied by Dave Brown & Rick Koessner. Awesome! Tori again joined on part of this number playing a 2 note sequence that added an incredible amount of charm to an already totally lovable arrangement. Theres also a bunch of other great new harmony arrangements utilizing Dave & Rick to augment the GO. "Eileen's Eye's is coming along nicely as is the recent CLB/Steve Poltz collaboration "This Way Up". They also whipped out a version of Michael Jackson's "Ben" from the "Willard" movie. Remember that? :-) Also for those who've been groovin to "She Won't Even Try" aka "The Skip Song", there's now another wonderful instrumental with beautiful wordless harmony vocals based on a new skip that Chris Davies found on an old organist Jimmy Smith LP. The 16 song set closed with a full blown "Radio Astronomy" to a standing ovation from the EDAs. 3 additional encores brought the set to a close beginning with a lyrically improvised "Thank God For The Living Room Tour" that was really heartfelt. The GO is a must-see! As for the Living Room Tour scene, as Cindy Lee spontaneously incorporated into the lyric - ----"maybe again next year".
