Hope all the Yanks among us had a good Thanksgiving. I came home to the following announcement from Nettwerk, which greatly amused me: >We've been informed that Sarah has been named 'Woman Of The Year' in the >newest issue of the Canadian women's magazine, Chatelaine. Right on, Sarah! > >Kim Pittaway, who wrote the previous article on Sarah in Chatelaine in >their November 1996 issue, did this one as well. It is apparantly a 2-page >article on how Sarah put together Lilith Fair. If you go to your newstand >to check it out, be sure to look for Sarah's name on the cover when you >pick it up. You won't find her picture on the cover, but the article IS >inside... >As we haven't gotten the magazine ourselves yet, we're guessing it may be >in the January 1998 issue, but as stated before, look for Sarah's name on >the cover. Didn't k.d. lang get the same honor a few years ago? (Isn't that where the song "Miss Chatelaine" came from?) I wonder if Sarah will find it as strange as k.d. did. :) I also received the new Rainbirds album yesterday (thanks, Marion :), which I'm listening to now. I'm liking it quite a bit. There's an interesting mix of styles, from trip-hop to acoustic to a mishmosh of the two (and an interesting cover of the Paul Williams song "Tomorrow", which was in the movie _Bugsy Malone_), and Katharina Franck's voice is in fine form, as always. If I hear of the potential for American distribution coming through for this disc, I'll let y'all know. I'm cleaning out my ectobox (in order to spare you all a Klaus of monumental proportions), and out of all the messages I'd saved about Hear's Music in Tucson and the Mollys, I've distilled the following questions: - -- where is Hear's located, and - -- are the Mollys going to be playing any shows in or around Tucson at the very end of the year? I'll be in Tucson (well, Vail, actually) for Christmas (12/23 - 1/4, to be exact), and woj will be there for the final few days of that time too. I'd love a chance to see the Mollys, since every time they play around here there's either something else going on or the timing just doesn't work out. And of course the record store sounds like a must-visit. :) If any ectophiles are going to be around at that time, please let me know and maybe we can meet up! Neile had posted: >Just a reminder to Northwest U.S. ectophiles that Veda Hille is playing in >Seattle tonight (opening for Dan Berg at the Tractor Tavern at 8:30) and in >Portland tomorrow night at the Crystal Ballroom (with Dan Berg and Lucy >Kaplansky). So -- how was it??? Was Dan Bern completely repulsive? Did Veda rule? Inquiring minds want to know! :) Jeffy inquired re the ecto t-shirt: >(hey, meth, weren't you (or somebody) looking into remaking these >things? this one's pretty well worn now...) I was looking into it a while ago, but the original screens turned out to be long lost, so I kind of forgot about it. It certainly seems well past time to make a new shirt, though -- we could either recreate the original image, or come up with an entirely new one. However, since I no longer live a couple blocks away from the shirtmaker I had been considering to do the job and I have no clue what facilities are available in and around New Haven, I open up the floor to another volunteer. :) >A while ago I made some comment about Loreena turning into Sarah, and that >two albums from now she'd be playing basketball arenas. meth made some >snide comment about hearing "Mummers Dance" on pop radio...and lo, here it >is happening. > >I'm afraid. Okay, okay... so Warner has decided to shell out some promotional $$$ to promote Loreena. Maybe that's because she doesn't plan to tour for this album (or at least not for a while)? If she does, I really don't think she'll allow herself to be booked in really huge venues. She seems aware enough of what's going on to not want to compromise her performance just for the sake of selling more tickets. Which reminds me, there was an interview with Loreena in what I guess is now no longer the current issue of PULSE. It was written by John DiLiberto (of Echoes fame), and I must say he should stick to letting his wife do all the interviews for the show. It was possibly the worst-written article I've ever seen in a national publication -- I wanted to go over it in red pen and send it back. But that's just the editor in me rearing its ugly head. :} Nick Hill reported: >The Nick Drake tribute concert is being broadast Tues. (tommorow) at 7 or 8 >pm on NYC's WFUV-FM 90.7. Did anyone tape this??? My one regret about moving out of NJ was leaving WFUV's listening area... we can't get World Cafe any more, either. :P I know most of the NY-area ectophiles live in the city itself and thus can't pick up the station, but there's always hope there's someone lurking out there... please step forward! :) Renee introduced herself: >I suppose now's as good a time as any to introduce myself to the list. >hello all. From Andrew: >Now guys, do we still require all >newcomers to post a 5,000-word analysis of Happy's music before they are >allowed to join? :) I don't know about that, but I notice we've gotten away from the shoe size disclosure requirement. So Renee, what's your shoe size? :> Richard opined: >She was a *natural* as Molly Shannon's foil-- "Basted In Blood" should >go down as one of SNL's classics, something they're running short of >these days; Hopefully, someone on the production staff took note of how >Sarah handled herself and sent a memo to Lorne re: future hosts. No kidding. We watched it again last night, and it was even more hilarious the second time around. I think we'll put it on a tape with Kate Bush and Rowan Atkinson's rendition of "Do Bears..." and label it "goddess comedy classics". :) Sarah was brilliant. "Are you going to be all right?" Hee. Java added: >It worked >on so many levels and was far and away the best moment in a show that should >be locked in a vault *never* to be seen again (except for the musical guest). Oh, you *can't* be referring to the host! How that man has been able to function in public life all these years is beyond me. You'd think his wife, who is herself a television journalist would have at least been able to teach him how to read the teleprompter without looking like he's sounding out all the words in his head. Jason passed along: >Please pass along the word that Paula's show at Toad's Place in New Haven, >CT has been officially cancelled. I *knew* there was something I'd been thinking of doing tonight! I should have said just to go wherever Dan Bern was supposed to be playing. I didn't know she'd get it wrong on her web pages, but I should have guessed given that she never did update the Olympia site from "a theatre". meredith asked: >> So -- how was it??? Was Dan Bern completely repulsive? Did Veda rule? >> Inquiring minds want to know! :) Well, I was smart enough to listen to some Dan Bern first, and to know to leave after Veda played. Veda was, of course, wonderful, but the set was way too short. She had her bass and drum players with her to accompany her, and so the combo was pretty smoking, though she called it something else. I wish I could remember because it was amusing. Anyway, the set was a good sample of her sound--a mix of things from _path of a body_ and _spine_ and energetic. I think she made a lot of converts during her set, as the applause got louder with each song. Veda was in great form, though she told us beforehand that she was fighting a virus. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 1997 18:09:58 -0800 (PST) From: hooligan Subject: Re: help ID a song Stay by Lisa Loeb On Mon, 1 Dec 1997, Sherlyn Koo wrote: > Hey folks, > > Can anyone ID this song? About six so far. :) Thanks for the idents, everyone! You guys know everything. Next time I'll make it harder ("What song is this? Starts off, 'You...'" :) I had a nice moment just before lunch - the radio station my boss insists on listening to (alternative rock) played an Indigo Girls song. Whooee! Which reminds me.
