It was great seeing everyone. Happy's voice was as stunning as ever. I was impressed with Caryn Lin. That Little Giant song blew me away, and Jon has had it playing constantly since the concert. I found I liked about half of Lin's and Lo's material, and found the other half to be just so-so. I second Jeff's rec of Flying Saucer disc in Adams Morgan. I don't go there too often cause I usually walk away with at least 6-10 discs too many. Phantasmagoria and another one in dupont are decent, otherwise you'll have to settle for borders or tower. I'm booked solid for the weekend unfortunately. But i'll be with the throngs at Lords of Acid on Sat night at 930 and at the HFS nutcracker on sunday. Weee.. I second what Kiri said about Caryn Lin, particularly the Little King song. Definitely the best song on her album. Happy's voice was in fine form, but I'd wished I'd heard her sing "To Live in Your World", which she performed at an earlier Lo show. It is one of my favorite songs of hers, and I even requested it at the Bottom Line show in NYC, but they didn't do it then, and they didn't do it the other night either. Oh well. Bon Logaza must be a big fan of Happy's lower register, as almost all the songs she sings with Project Lo feature it almost exclusively. It was great to meet some more ectophiles too, and put more faces to names. And if anyone goes to Phantasmogoria again, and is looking for a place to eat nearby, I highly recommend Paul Kee's restaurant. Its a block away and Neal and I had an excellent meal there. Some of the best Chinese food I've had in a long time (which isn't saying a whole lot since Chinese food in Minnesota tends to be right up there with La Choy). But still it was excellent, and featured all kinds of delicacies Neal and I were a little too timid to try (like stuffed pork intestines and cold shredded jellyfish). After the Project Lo show, Neal and I buzzed up to Baltimore to catch the last bit of Lisa Cerbone's set. She really is great live, and about the sweetest person you could ever meet. Not at all your typical rock star. For those of you out on the east coast, I highly recommend getting out to see her. I almost pulled a woj ;) when she misheard me saying "I really like both your albums" and heard it as "I really like most your album" and gave me a funny look and replied "Oh...well I won't ask what parts you don't like." Luckily Neal came to my rescue and explained what I'd actually said. After returning to Minneapolis, I caught the Sundays show here on Monday. Garrison Starr opened, and she was quite good, but a little too earnest. She has a very powerful voice, but I'd wish she didn't always feel the need to yell (or sing very loudly). It seems more and more artists have no concept of subtlety. Still she was pretty entertaining. The Sundays were great--Harriet Wheeler is incredibly charming, though I had a hard time understanding anything she said between songs. She does have quite a strong accent, plus she tends to speak quite softly. I found the best moments in the show to be the ones that most reminded me of the Cocteau Twins-- the higher Harriet's voice gets, the more it sends chills down my spine. The only fault in the evening was that her vocals were a little lower in the mix than I would have liked--but that may have been because I was standing right at the stage. A great show, but if I'd had the option to see Jane's CHristmas show the same night, I think I'd definitely choose Jane. I'm still mad she's not making it to Minneapolis this year. Well, that's it for now. If all else fails just ask Sarah to point me out, but that is a probably last resort option as you don't really want to be associated to me. ;-) For those NOT in the Toronto area and who would like a copy of her ep cassette, let me know, I picked up a bunch of extras at the last show. I eventually bought it anyway and was pleasantly surprised. The first couple songs have a very rockish sound, sort of like Belly's _King_ album, although IMHO more catchy than anything on _King_. The later songs bring in more acoustic guitars, strings, and some synths to excellent effect. There are really no bad songs on the album, although "Goat Girl" sort of annoys me just because the lyrics are kind of silly. Anyway, I would definitely recommend picking up _Lovesongs_. I bought TD's solo album on the strength of the single, "Pretty Deep" which I think is a terrific song. I loved Belly's first album, but was disappointed in their follow-up. I had originally intended to wait on _Love Songs_ but after hearing "Pretty Deep" I got it. I was not disappointed. It reminds me a little of Belly's first album, with some nice pop tunes along with the quirkier stuff that I love. Kind of a blend of Donelly's work with Throwing Muses and _Star_. At any rate, I definitely recommend it. Ani Difranco's music is often described as punkfolk. Her earlier recordings have a strong contemporary folk sound, but with perhaps more outspoken lyrics than more singer songwriters use. I got interested in her around the time of her fourth (?) album, _Puddle Dive_, which I enjoy a lot when I'm in the mood for contemporary folk. I liked her subsequent albums, _Out of Range_ and _Not a Pretty Girl_ even better than _Puddle Dive_, but _Dilate_ I absolutely _love_. This has to do with the fact that my tastes aren't toward the contemporary folk end of things but more toward alternative music. _Dilate_ is a powerfully emotioaln album, and unlike some ectophiles, I love the production--I think it works with the songs. Mind you, I like _Living in Clip_ (one of the rare live albums that I like as much as studio albums--I love hearing artists live, but live albums rarely catch that feeling and usually seem awkward and strained to me) so I think it's mostly the songs and songwriting that I love here. Anyway, depending on your tastes, I personally would recommend _Dilate_ first. If you like contemporary folk music a lot start with her earlier work, perhaps _Puddle Dive_ or earlier. If you like contemporary folk music edging toward rock, start with _Out of Range_ or _Not a Pretty Girl_ Anyway, that's my advice. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 23:13:00 -0500 From: jjh969@juno.com Subject: Turkey Day Greetings & Susan. I've seen Happy, er, I think 7 or 8 times now, but it's always been with Kelly Bird singing bv's. The two have a great synergy when singing together, and a reasonable overlap on their ranges. Caryn Lin, while sounding fine singing her own material, frankly sounded pretty lousy alongside Happy. Happy can quite literally sign circles around her, with a range that goes both much higher and lower, and stays crystal clear along the way. This made it exceptionally easy to tell when Happy was carrying the full tune and making these absolutely stunning, smooth transitions between the bottom and upper portions of her range. I want more. Chris' performance proved that light is faster than sound. The music seemed not keep up with his fingers, like his digits were a hemidemisemiquaver ahead of the sound reaching my ears. Almost like he was playing ahead of the score through a digital delay. At one point Michelle was clawing the strings south of the fret board while bowing like a woman possessed and what should happen but a wail leapt from between gut and string that was clearly not intended. It was, for those familiar with Ornette, what sounded like a harmolodic harmonic. It Fit ! Lindsay looked down, shook his head, perhaps the only other person to pick up on it, and the fact that while it was strange, it was not out of place, and smiled with a cheshire grin. It think it was late during "Snakes/Mna' na hEirann", during Susan's vocals and something Susan sang in Irish sounded like "Michelle you're rattling my teeth". They never fail to amaze. Ani apparently considers herself a performance rather than studio musician, and this record is supposed to capture the energy and spirit of her gigs. Or so I'm told, anyway. I haven't had a chance to see her yet, but hopefully I will when she visits Sydney in March... BTW, did you know that Ani has a near-perfect clone? Tanya Donnelly... I'm fond of her and I truly *wanted* to like that new CD. And while I like it well enough when I play it , the trouble is I don't seem to play it all that much. The first Belly record remains for me THE definitive Tanya and compared to that, "Lovesongs for Underdogs" is a bit of a disappointment. The tunes are not as memorable, the hooks not as catchy, the words not as quirky.... I feel the standout among her latest is the bittersweet "Restless" from "Sliding and diving" EP which for me surpasses anything found on the album when it comes to beautiful tune and emotional impact... Naturally such things are subjective - I can only say that's the way it works for me. and finally, steve.ito@mailbox66.utcc.utoronto.ca says: >Sarah Slean will be playing this Friday night at the >Rivoli.
