Hmm... from what I've seen, Washington is pretty terrible as far as CD shops go, at least as compared to NYC, Austin, or even Dallas. You *might* find some good used stuff @ Phantasmagoria or Second Story Books, both near Dupont Circle. The Tower at 20th and Pennsylvania is very good at classical, jazz, and world music -- haven't looked into rock there. My weekend is a mystery. (We went there with Neal Copperman and Jeff Wasilko, and I recall encouraging them both to spend money and I spent not a little myself. It was just a few blocks from where Neal's sister's Celtic band was playing). Called Go Discs or something like that. Their stock was bought by...errr....I can't recally if it was Flying Saucer or Phantasmagoria, but I'm pretty sure it was the former. Flying Saucer is definitely one of the better used shops in the area; I've found lots of fun things there. As for my weekend, well, I've already got some friends from out of town coming in, so I kinda doubt I can make plans. jeff (who suddenly is struck by the high proportion of dc-area ectophiles who're fags of one form or another; wonder what the overall ecto proportion is...anyone interested in a tally?) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 16:39:43 -0500 (EST) From: Gentle Moose Subject: Rude awakening? The Nields at the Iron Horse (11/21) Though I rarely feel compelled to listen to either of my Nields cds, I absolutely love to see them perform live. In my opinion, the cds simply don't capture the energy or the pure fun that make The Nields so appealing. Friday's show was yet another stellar performance by the band, and I really liked four of the five new songs they played (I thought the other one was just okay). As Meredith mentioned, the opening band, Jump Little Children, was just plain bad. They were unoriginal, boring and overly smug. Feh. Susan James at Arlene's Grocery (11/22) I went to this show without having heard a single note of Susan's music, trusting the opinion of those ectophiles who have had good things to say about her. I'm glad I did, because I thought she was absolutely amazing! A great voice, great guitar playing and great songs... what more could you ask for? I loved all the songs she performed from her upcoming album, so I'm really looking forward to getting a copy of it. Unlike woj, I'd be perfectly happy if they didn't change very much in the studio. I was glad to read Neile's mention that Susan will be doing an instrumental album as well, because I was blown away by her skill with the guitar as well. I picked up a copy of Shocking Pink Bananna Seat at the show, and though I've only listened to it only a couple of times so far I really like it. Susan McKeown & The Chanting House at Fez (11/22) I always go to Susan's shows expecting great things, and I have yet to be disappointed. As Meredith and Paul mentioned, Saturday's late show was another wonderful performance by Susan and the gang. After the set ended I was searching for a word to describe the energy everyone played with, and Meredith suggested "fierce". I think that's the perfect term to describe it, especially for Michelle. She was really attacking her cello, fraying the bow and eventually breaking a string. There was a time when I thought Michelle was sort of playing in the shadow of Lindsay and Chris, but after her performances at the Towne Crier last month and Fez on Saturday I've decided I was wrong about that. She's a truly great musician. Everyone else was in fine form as well. I was particularly impressed by some of the stuff Chris was doing, but Lindsay and Jeff sounded great as well. Susan was... well, Susan was Susan, amazing as always. I can't say enough good things about her (though that doesn't stop me from trying). Anyway, here's the set list from the show: Winter King Daddy's Little Girl Chances Are Fuck You Storm in a Teacup Seven Cold Glories Ce Leis e Through the Bitter Frost and Snow I Sing of a Maiden Bushes and Briars Wheels of the World Salome Snakes ----- Auld Lang Syne Blue Moon I was great to hear "Storm in a Teacup" (thanks to Sam for requesting it), as it's my favorite song on _Bones_. "Bushes and Briars" was a last minute addition to the set, giving Michelle time to go and put a new string on her cello, and the Susan and Lindsay version of "Blue Moon" was an unexpected pleasure. As for Tim Hill, the opening act, I thought he was really good. His songs were intelligent and complex and he has a good voice. It's a shame he was faced with the most obnoxious crowd I've ever seen at one of Susan's Fez shows. People talked, loudly, during most of his set. Their loss I guess. :P Mike np: Altan -- Runaway Sunday | Michael Curry / mcurry@io.com / mcurry@compuserve.com | | http://www.io.com/~mcurry | | Am I bitter? HFS has already played "The Mummers Dance" *twice* today, which is to say medium rotation (high rotation would be 3 iterations during a work day...UGH). A while ago I made some comment about Loreena turning into Sarah, and that two albums from now she'd be playing basketball arenas. meth made some snide comment about hearing "Mummers Dance" on pop radio...and lo, here it is happening. I'm afraid. And I can't figure out what this means about HFS, which has turned into a rather abysmal radio station over the last year+. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 18:23:34 -0600 (CST) From: kerry white Subject: sessions PBS CYLL This weekend: Sheryl Crow and Gillian Welsh. The coincidence being that I was just preparing to report about another new album release titled "Hunger". More on that later. Maybe someone remembers me raving about a local band called "Your Finest Drops" (formerly "Swaggercanes"). They've finally released their first album, which was about time, since my promo tapes were wearing out already. At one of their concerts a couple of weeks ago, we talked with the main people in the band, and found out that the singer must be an ectophile at heart. She mentioned liking Suzanne Vega, Heather Nova, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and Bobo very much. If Claudia and I ever manage to meet an H?P deadline again (we're trying hard!), one of us will surely put one or two songs from them on the tape. My news about Rainbirds new album aren't news anymore, as Marion has already told you about it. But I've now received the new "Forever" album, and it's a an intriging collection of songs. This, Bjoerk's "Homogenic" and the album by the Drops are all fighting hard to get a spin on my CD player. Highly recommended! The already mentioned "Hunger" (please use the german pronounciation :) is the first solo project by Rainbirds' singer Katharina Franck, which has been released in mid-october. It's nothing like Rainbirds, although it features music by Ulrike Haake, and the Rainbirds played on this recording. It's a collection of poems and stories by Katharina, all in German, except for two pieces of "eatable poetry". It has been released at "Sans Soleil", and they were considering to put it out as a book. Luckily the final decision was to create a CD with booklet. So Katharina doesn't sing on this album, and I must say that her speaking voice isn't as spectacular and unique as her singing voice. It had been introduced on the Frankfurt book faire and premiered as a "literature concert" in the theatre of Mainz on october 24th; a performance of about an hour. Although labelled as Katharina's solo project, with the addition of Ulrike's music this has become a collaboration. Although I do enjoy the album, I probably won't play it that often. I've noticed that for me, the singing is an important part of music, and narrative to music is probably too demanding. The CD is not available through the usual distribution channels, and can only be ordered from Rainbirds Merchandising and Sans Soleil. RM (run by two fans with the support of the band) also provides a german newsletter. LATEST NEWS is that there are plans for some kind of collaboration between Rainbirds and Your Finest Drops. I don't have details yet, but my guess is that the Drops will be opening on the forthcoming Rainbirds tour (Jan/Feb '98). Needless to say that we are pretty excited about that (so please pretend that I didn't say it :).
