As Meth said in your message (which I snipped because you all just read it, right?) she has a wonderful voice and is an _amazing_ guitar player. She has been working on two discs: one of songs, and another of guitar work. This is one of those rare times when I'm actually looking forward to a non-classical instrumental cd--I'm usually much more interested in songs and the interaction of vocals and instruments--she's that good. The release of Lanterna's tape on cd is the last time I was so excited about an instrumental release (though her guitar work is not at all like Henry Frayne's, who uses harmonics much more). Susan is more of what if I didn't like it I'd call a guitar wanker--showy, experimental stuff, that because she's such a good musician is powerful and melodic. Her songs themselves range from mainstream rock to almost contemporary folk ("Eileen", the shocking pink banana seat song) to experimental rock "Poison", my favourite song on _Shocking Pink Banana Seat_, a song that actually rather reminds me of Kathleen Yearwood. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 11:24:42 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Fischer Subject: Re: AOL trouble? Anneli Drecker (vocalist) has also guested on other albums - I have one by Jah Wobble on which she does some groovy vocal tracks. Nettwerk released a couple of Bel Canto albums under licence (White-Out Conditions, Birds of Passage). Shimmering Warm and Bright and Magic Box were never released by Nettwerk. I don't know who carries Bel Canto in North America these days. I kinda like Birds of Passage, but White-Out Conditions is a bit too synthetic-sounding for my tastes. Drecker has a great voice. A bit cold sounding, (heck - she *is* Norwegian! ;) but not as floaty as Enya. Certainly less likely to be played in new age bookshops. There's a pretty lengthy entry on them in the Ectophiles' Guide: http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/bel.canto.html - Neil K. - -- 49N 16' 123W 7' + Nettwerk Productions + (604) 654-2929 Vancouver, BC, Canada + nkg@nettwerk.com Technical Services - bringing that attitude to a desktop near you ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 21:06:22 -0500 (EST) From: faucet@pipeline.com Subject: Tim / Vic / Nick Drake boadcast Meth spake: >Of course, I did have to run into Nick Hill at the show and find out that >I'd missed the Victoria Williams show of a lifetime in Brooklyn by going to >Arlene Grocery instead. :P Thanks, Nick. No, he has recorded an album, but it is not yet out.. He has been a member of The Harmonic Choir (They do a type of multi note singing devoloped by Tibetan monks) for many years, and is on three of their records. I managed to miss everything except Vic's show, which was quite spectacular. I will try to post a set list later. She did over a dozen standards.. Stars Fell On Alabama, Imagination, Life is a Bowl Of Cherries, Nature Boy (which is on her new album).. Quite a stunning, unusual show.. Two songs from Loose. Three from the new album, and a few of Mark Olson's.. A bunch of oldies. The highlight for me was Utah Phillip's "Good Night Lovin Trail". The Nick Drake tribute concert is being broadast Tues. (tommorow) at 7 or 8 pm on NYC's WFUV-FM 90.7.. Well worth tuning in for.. Katell's version of "River Man" is heartbreaking. And The Kletter Sisters are quite a discovery for me. They have an album that Joe Boyd produced coming next year. His >music was very >mellow, quite jazzy, and he has a really good voice (he was able to do >justice to a Jeff Buckley song quite nicely). I was really blown away by Tim--most of all by his lyrics: he has something intelligent to say, he builds effective images, and there's no "muddying the waters to make them appear deep." His voice occasionally got a little too James Taylor-ish for me, and I was sometimes feeling the need for an additional instrument (a sax would have been super), but that's just me caviling. Highly recommended. >I don't know if he has any recordings out (Nick?), Tim mentioned to me after the show that the trio has a recording all made and they just need to find someone to put it out. >After that we.. went down to Fez to see Susan McKeown and the Chanting >House's final 1997 performance. As usual, they brought the house down. I >don't know how it's possible for them to keep on getting better, but they do. Absolutely! Not that they were lacking before, but every time I see them the music has even more passion in it than the last time. As meth mentioned Saturday, everyone seemed to be playing particularly fiercely. Chris added lots of cool guitar stuff I hadn't heard before, but the pinnacle for me was Michelle's attacking the cello so hard on "I Know I Know" that she broke a string, not to mention many strands of the bow. At the rate they're going, by the time most people on this list get to hear Susan & Co., they'll have reached the point that all you newbies will just disappear in one great big orgasmic poof.
