Hello out there! Just wondering if any ectophiles are in or around the city of Toronto. I'm up here for the next few months working, and wouldn't mind meeting up with anyone who knows the town and the music scene/food scene! :) Just drop me a note. According to http://www.phantasmagoria.com/shows.html : "Phantasmagoria Club is open Tuesday through Saturday nights, with weekday shows at 8PM, Friday and Saturday at 9. We are an all ages club, but you must show a valid ID over 21 to obtain beer. Food is served from 6PM to 12MN on show nights. There is no table service; order and pick up at the bar. The record store is open between band sets and for 1/2 hour after shows. There is no smoking in the main club, but a smoking lounge is available. In general, acts not classified as to musical style are Alternative Rock, but for more info on any show, call (301)949-8886." I'm going to try to make it to this -- a chance to see Happy live after all these years! (How will we all recognize each other? I'll be wearing a black coat and red buttondown shirt, and probably clutching a copy of BtC that I hope Happy will autograph :-]) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 16:41:31 -0600 (CST) From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Lo Rhodes On Fri, 21 Nov 1997, Joseph Zitt wrote: > I'm going to try to make it to this -- a chance to see Happy live after > all these years! Would anyone happen to have or know where I could get tickets to see Portishead playing in San Francisco at the Warfield on Dec 16th? I called BASS, and they are all sold out, and need to find an alternative source for tickets. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I am willing to pay a premium price for them. :) mahalo, Erich Ian Domingo ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 18:19:17 -0500 From: "Jeffrey C. Burka" Subject: ARGH!!!! Barely a mention of Happy! this was in the Washington Post's _weekend_ section... despite praise for Happy's vocals, they never mention that they are, indeed, *hers*...don't blink, you might miss the mention of Happy... (well, okay, it's supposed to be reviews of the Project Lo and Caryn Lin albums, but still...) - ------ PROJECT LO "Black Canvas" Lolo CARYN LIN "Tolerance for Ambiguity" Alchemy By Mark Jenkins Friday, November 21, 1997; Page N13 The Washington Post Although it includes four vocal tracks, "Black Canvas" doesn't represent Project Lo's rejection of instrumental jazz-rock. The group is primarily a showcase for synth-player J. Hatch, violinist Caryn Lin and especially ex-Gong guitarist Bon Lozaga, who also performs with the bands Bon and Gongzilla. In addition to playing guitar, percussion, keyboards and bass, Lozaga wrote all but two of the nine tracks and produced the disc. Despite the occasional emphatic passage, this music is gentle and hushed, sometimes even serene. The effect is somewhere between cool jazz (exemplified by part-time bassist's Percy Jones 's work on "Black Canvas/Part II") and Eastern music (notably in Lozaga's koto-like guitar on "D.I.E" and the Indo-Arabic chanting of "Rajah"). The vocal tracks are a bit more outgoing than the instrumentals, yet they don't break the mood. Indeed, the lilting "Perfection" and a pretty version of Peter Gabriel 's "Mercy Street" suggest that Project Lo's defection to song-oriented music would be an agreeable development. Project Lo violinist Lin sings a bit on her recent solo album, "Tolerance for Ambiguity," but this album also emphasizes instrumental compositions. Accompanied principally by David Torn (on guitar and many other instruments) and percussionist William "Rej" Troup III, Lin mostly plays a techno-updated style of Celtic folk-rock. Though she and Torn are credited with such things as "viorhythmic loop," "violacussion," "deeply dee-tuned guitar" and "performed ambience," the music that results is recognizably rooted in traditional jigs and laments. For all its up-to-date technology, a track such as "In the Abbey of Scartaglen " is redolent of the old country." Both appearing Friday at Phantasmagoria with Happy Road. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 18:12:50 -0500 From: "Jeffrey C. Fellow Ectophiles, In keeping with the season I tried to send Kevin birthday greetings, only to have AOL bounce my mail. Did anyone else sending greetings have a similar problem, or am I the victim of the fickle finger of fate? Fortunately (or not) I have an AOL account and resent the message from there, but I've noticed that the last few messages I've tried to send to someone with an AOL address have bounced. Now back to your musical discussions, which are already in progress...
