Well I have *no* idea how your tastes follow mine, but I still find "O Seasons O Castles" much more moving and intense (earthy and from the heart) than "Jet". OSOC is one of my all-time favorites (definitely top ten material, depending upon the mood). Jet may just need to grow on me... but it seems more abstract and intellectual in the imagery. Although I like some songs on Jet very much, and find it enjoyable, I don't think I'd rave about Katell the way I currently do had I not gotten OSOC first. And I *still* am mystified by "Ole Conquistador" since it seems like a cognitive dissonance to me: recognizing the conquering "hierarchical-patriarchal" violence in this person(?) and then ending a a sort of love song to him.... just twists *my* brain around -- does anyone else have a more satisfying interpretation of this song? - -Richard. @ \@/ Richard A. For anyone interested in exploring the ecto must, take a look at my newly updated page: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/mush.html I started the ectomush as an alternative to irc back in 1995. It was going great for a while, then the system it was on started acting up and there were also some real assholes crawling around the site. It looks considerably calmer now. For those that had accounts there and can still get in, the ecto area for non-newbies starts at #29946. So you can: @tel me=#29946 to get there. For those new to mushes, following the instructions on my web page to start. When you have gone through the system's newbie stuff, you are ready to get set for ecto. The ecto area has a separate newbie trail to walk through. You can get there with: @tel me=68340 Everything is remarkably well preserved. When I set up the place I based the layout very loosely on Philadelphia--City Hall is at the center, with roads going out north at south (what would have been Broad Street in Philly) and west (what would be Market Street in Philly). Since nothing is being built on east end of Market Stret in Philly, I figured why should the mush be any different, so there's no road going east. ;) There are blocks with vendors that will dispense rooms to people. The Ecto meeting room is downstairs from City Hall, which is a lot better than in Philadelphia, where all you'd find is subway tunnels. Like I said, everything is well preserved. It's a good walk around a ghost town. But if people are interested, it is still sitting there waiting to be used and added to. One interesting thing since the area first died is changes in technolgy--now a client is available from chaco.com that allows the imbedding of gifs and sound in the mush. Back in the old days people had cd players and juke boxes that would say "Sarah McLachlan's Possession is now play." Now you can build a cd player that will play Possession if you have a sample from the song to link people to. The new CD release is about twice as long, with six new tracks added. All of the tracks that appeared on the tape were re-recorded, and in most cases the new versions have more complex arrangements that involve more instruments (and players). It's got her best songs on it, and it features her old guitarist and drummer who were excellent (but have gone onto other projects). If you don't like live records, grab 'Regarding the soul'. You might also want to pick up her new CD 'The Map' at the show, as it's not out in stores and won't be in it's current form. Dee's been signed with a new label, so 'The Map' will probably re-released with a different track listing... - -jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 00:46:04 -0500 From: meredith Subject: sTuff Hi! First off, CONGRATULATIONS HAPPY!!! I can't believe there hasn't been more buzz about the Big Announcement in these pages... is everybody iced/snowed in or on vacation or something??? It certainly sounds like Happy has found exactly what she's been looking for: a support organization that will provide her with the werewithal to do the things she's always wanted to do (promotion, touring etc.) while also giving her 100% creative control. I for one am relieved that she hasn't signed with a major label, or even a faux-indie offshoot of a major label; I'm in the process of watching my favorite band The Nields get royally screwed over by their faux-indie major label, and it's a truly painful experience. I hope Happy's deal works out well for everyone involved. And now I'm counting the weeks until the new release in April. Yay. :) As for me, this week has seen a lovely (not) business trip to scenic (not) Rockford, Illinois, where the highlight of the trip consisted of hearing Beth Orton and 10,000 Maniacs on the sound system in a local eatery at lunchtime, and then hearing a Project Lo song on Echoes that evening (at least the Rockford NPR affiliate carries Echoes at a human hour every evening). I then rushed straight from Newark Airport to the Bottom Line for the Nightbirds show on Thursday, where woj and I managed to see the second half of the early show and the first half of the late show on the same ticket. After suffering through Victoria Shaw (I'm just going to say that she's written #1 songs for Garth Brooks and leave that to speak for itself), who went on WAY too long and got me worried that Veda Hille wouldn't have time to play anything at all, Veda and her Smokin' Combo gave us 25 minutes of intensely wonderful music that created many new converts to the cause, if the crowd that pressed around her after the show buying every CD she'd brought with her was any indication. Her drummer even stepped out in front of his kit and played the saw on "Sweet"! Imagine, if you will, 150+ New York City folkie-types all leaning forward in their seats going "what the hell is THAT? That's SO cool!!!". It was awesome. :) woj and I stuck around to see Meryn Cadell, who was really really great - -- Veda even joined her to sing backup on her final two songs, one of which, "Holy Projector!" has been going through my head ever since. She has a new album out called _6 Blocks_, and I need to pick it up soon. She mentioned that she's moving to NYC next month, so maybe she'll start performing locally soon. Finally I survived one song by Terre Roche and her Mood Swings, and we left to make our way home in the freezing rain. That one song served to solve a long-standing mystery for me: I've always known that I really really can't stand to The Roches, because one of them makes the entire trio sound like a bunch of cats yowling on a fence to me, but I've never been able to figure out who it was. Well, now I know the culprit is not Suzzy or Maggie, but Terre. I feel much better now. :) Oh, I almost forgot to mention Susan Werner's amazingly wonderful show at The Iron Horse last Saturday night! If she ever decides to give up the music thing, she should definitely consider stand-up comedy. She literally had me laughing so hard at one point I thought I was going to throw up. :} She had a guitarist with her, who really added a new dimension to the music (and, as she told me afterwards, is keeping it more interesting for her as well). I hope one day her studio works can truly capture the energy of her live performances. The Nudes opened, and they were really good too. Next weekend is going to be quite the hectic one. Here's the schedule, as far as woj and I are concerned: Thursday, 11/20 -- Project Lo (and Happy! :), The Bottom Line (early show) Friday, 11/21 -- The Nields, The Iron Horse (late show) Saturday, 11/22 -- Susan James, Arlene Grocery (I think) (7 pm) Susan McKeown, Fez (late show) Susan McKeown is also rumored to be playing in Northampton on Sunday 11/23, but I've a feeling we'll be pretty fried by then. :) Who's planning on attending any of the shows listed above? I'm sure we'll be grabbing dinner between shows on Saturday, so maybe we can plan to meet up with folks then. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 00:55:14 -0500 From: meredith Subject: New Releases for 11/11 Hi! Subject: Happy in Baltimore It's got to have been close to a year since I've posted, but I'm still lurking... :) Just wanted to report that Jenn and I met Neal at the Project Lo show tonight at Orion Studios in Baltimore. Tony Geballe opened the show with his 12-string guitar. We liked it enough to buy the CD. After Tony, Project Lo and Caryn Lin came on stage. They played a few of Caryn's songs, then Happy came out to sing some of the Project Lo stuff. They played "Perfection", "Mercy Street", and "D.I.E". The sound was a bit muddy, so it was a bit tough to pick Happy's voice out. They then played "In Your World" off of Warpaint. Very cool. Happy then left the stage and they did some Project Lo-type stuff, but since I really don't know their music (other than the Happy songs), I couldn't say what they played. They came back for two encores, one of which featured Bowie's "Station to Station" leading into "Warpaint". (We had to ask Happy after the show what they played before "Warpaint", though Neal did have it pegged as a Bowie song.) All in all, it was a very good performance. We made sure to congratulate Happy for getting the record contract. And I commented on her "interpretive dance" during the parts of the show that she wasn't singing. :) She has such a good sense of humor. :) It must be weird though for her to be on stage without her guitar and nothing to do. :) John Sandoval P.S. For those who remember me, I just wanted to mention that Jenn and I are expecting a new addition to the family in March. :) We don't know if it's a boy or a girl since we decided to wait until it's born to find out. Jenn said that the baby seemed to like Happy, since it was moving around pretty good when she was singing. :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 01:03:37 -0500 From: meredith Subject: nettwerk news Hi!
