Hmmm...this is pretty cool...Blue Thumb was Jonatha's label for _Plumb_...she's now on MCA\Universal....wow, her third label...I think she's also moved to California from Boston... I doubt that this is true, but it would be neat if the reason why Dee is on Jonatha's former label and the reason why Jonatha guests on her album would be because Dee opened for Jonatha at Amherst a year ago and they played together on a couple tunes....ha, yeah right, paul... Just saw Jonatha tonight at a brand spanking new Tavern\club in Annapolis, MD called the Ram's Head Tavern....pretty nice place...good soundsystem, the serve food...great lineup coming up including Patty Larkin, Pete and Maura Kennedy with Amy Rigby opening, and Jane Siberry :) Problem...it's 21 and over and i'm only 20...solution, talk to the manager...he let me in for tonight's show and when i asked if i could come back for other shows, he said sure, he'd make an exception for me...is that cool or what... Jonatha performed for an hour and a half...Catie Curtis opened...good stuff... here's info on how to get Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy\Freedom Sessions\I Will Remember You Gold cd editions : the Gold Cd's release date was changed to Dec. 2nd due to problems in production. They can be ordered direct around Thanksgiving by calling 800-457-2577, Classic Records number... Classic Records supposedly took Nettwerk's recordings of these albums and song, made them sound better, and are releasing them as a two cd gold set... Ben Folds Five on Sessions right now...god i love those guys....I can't believe that Ben Folds is self-taught at the piano...my sister's seeing them tomorrow in Philly...i'm not going though :( so, meth and woj, how'd puck and tam take the move? They still in one piece each? Jane had nearly given up on Warner allowing her to release her older material. Here's what Jane had to say (from her web site): Warner Bros. Comes Thru 4 former-artist-known-as-Siberry We had announced that the live New York shows that Siberry performed last fall would come out as an exciting trilogy. Since then, the releases were postponed due to legal problems arising from restrictions from Warner Bros. that involved the rights to re-record songs that they had previously released (there were some Reprise-released songs included in the shows). This created quite a long period of frustration for Jane since the idea of Warner Bros. being so closely tied into her new label was too discouraging. This meant that there would be no new SHEEBA releases for quite a while and everyone had already bought 14 copies of our first release "TEENAGER" trying to help out. However, on SHEEBA's first birthday, Jane made a final resigned completion call to Warner Bros. to say she was not going to fight them anymore - she was going to forget about the trilogy. But Warner Bros. TOTALLY SHOCKED her by saying they had come up with a brand new solution that she might find acceptable. They HAD and she DID and so...the big news is... THE LIVE TRILOGY IS ON! Now we can get this wonderful live music out into the world. May Warner Bros./Reprise's gesture of goodwill towards Jane come back to them one-thousand-fold. (If anyone is so inclined, you can write: Howie Klein c/o Reprise Records/Warner Bros. 3300 Warner Blvd., Burbank, CA 91510 to thank them for their creative thinking and respect towards their former-artist-known-as-Siberry) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 16:41:38 -0800 From: neile@sff.net (Neile Graham) Subject: Susan James Newsletter Some Susan James news for you all. - --Neile >Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 13:50:06 -0800 (PST) >X-Sender: susanj@pacificnet.net (Unverified) >Mime-Version: 1.0 >To: susanj@pacificnet.net >From: susanj@pacificnet.net (susan james) >Subject: Susan James Newsletter d > >Hello One and All: >I wish I could make these email newsletters to you all more personal, but >the list is getting bigger, I'm glad you're all out there, you >understand.... Here's a report; sorry I didn't have time to shorten it: Hotel Galvez is not a terrific venue if you've got more than one musician; the "stage" area is *small.* Last time Mila played here she did a solo set; this time she was with bass player Elissa Moser. I've seen Elissa with Mila a few times; I like her feline swaying when she plays. Unfortunately, the Hotel Galvez stage doesn't lend itself to motion at all, so it took awhile before Elissa could really get into the music. Another disadvantage is that there's no sound engineer; the musicians do a hit-or-miss check and then plunge in; adjusting the sound by trial and error as they go along. Mila started out miked up too loud, but fixed that before the second song. Then "Someone" turned out interesting because the mike for the backing vocals hadn't been adjusted downward as well. Plus there was a little episode where the bass speaker was sitting on a metal folding chair which resonated on certain notes, leading to what Mila called a "kazoo solo" during "Time that We Spent." Fortunately, all this was cleared up within the first four songs or so. I am now much more appreciative of the role of sound engineers. These are all minor bones to pick with what was actually a nice show. I missed Lyris Hung's backing vocals on "Motorboat," and her violin part on "All Things Told," but otherwise the music stood up fine even without Lyris and the drummer. Set list: Constance Time that We Spent Someone By Now Motorboat The Irish Sea Worlds Away Hip to Hip Super 8 All Things Told *** For anyone considering going to Kat Devlin's show on the 22nd, be forewarned: it's not a Kate Bush cover concert. Which is not to say that there's no Kate Bush in it at all, but don't expect a whole show of Kate Bush. The show's concept is interesting. At the beginning (after entering singing a modified version of "I Have Confidence [...in Me]" and tripping over it a bit), she explained that since she has trouble being a control freak and meticulously planning her shows to the minutest detail, she was going to try giving up control. So she had learned 60 or 70 songs and was going to give the audience control over what she'd sing: everyone got a "menu" with different categories of songs color-coded. When she finished a song, audience members would shout out what color they wanted to hear, and Kat would draw a slip of that color from a bowl holding all the little slips. The slip had the name of a song written on it, and she'd pass it to the piano player, who would get the book of the corresponding color to find the music for the song. The categories were something like this: Broadway show ballads, Broadway show tunes up-tempo, pop ballads, pop tunes up-tempo, Kate Bush, and "standards." For the first song, everyone wanted Kate Bush (including me). She drew "Babooshka." It was nice--she has a nice voice, did a good enough job that my subconscious wasn't bothering me with negative comparisons to Kate, and did some interesting things with a veil. She sang several other Kate songs during the show: "Mother," "This Woman's Work," and "Feel It." For the rest, it was an interesting mix of show tunes I didn't know with songs you'd see discussed here (namely, a Tori song I've already forgotten and that Alanis "would she go down on you in a theater" song). The main negative aspect for me was the "cabaret singer" style of the show, where the singer takes on a different pose or persona for each song; it comes across to me as artificial and acted rather than from the heart. So there ya have it. Cheers, Paul ***************************************************************************** "Let her out? But she's a killer!" "No she's not. And give her your coat."
