Dee's got a whole new band--Tanya and Phillip have moved on to their own projects. She's touring with 4 other musicians (a percussionist, cellist, guitarist and someone playing an accoustic bass). Dee mentioned that she's been signed with GRP's Blue Thumb label, so they should have better distribution in the future. Her current CD (The Map) hasn't been released to stores becuase of this, and they expect to rework it a bit (maybe add or change a few songs) and have it out in 1998. In the mean time, you can order The Map direct from Exit Nine Records (800-266-4NYC). I've only listened to The Map once (on the way home from the show), but it's as good or better than her previous work. Her old band-mates (Tanya and Phillip) are featured prominently, as are guests T-Bone Wolk and Jonatha Brooke. Her husband (Mike Mainieri) even makes an appearance on the vibes. The show was quite good. Tara's improved her live performance considerably since I saw her almost a year ago opening for Ashley MacIsaac. Dee's performance was great, but plauged by techincal problems. Her borrowed harp seemed to be feeding back to the house PA, and the sound mix in general just didn't sound right (too much drums, not enough cello and guitar). The new percussionist has big shoes to fill taking Phillip's place, and I didn't feel he was up to the task... Still, I enjoyed the show quite a bit (my 3rd time seeing Dee) and I'd love to see her again under better circumstances... I'm off to see Svetlana (aka Susan Werner) with the Nudes opening tomorrow (Saturday). So much music, so little time (-: - -Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 1997 03:00:21 -0500 From: matthewm (Mike Matthews) Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** *********************** Jens Brage (brage@delta.dk) *********************** ******************** Lynn Garrett (LynnK68685@aol.com) ******************** ********************* Sam Murgie (smurgie@ansys.com) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jens Brage Sun November 08 1964 Scorpio Rising Lynn Garrett Sat November 08 1958 Scorpio Sam Murgie Fri November 08 1957 Scorpio Rachel Kramer Bussel Mon November 10 1975 Scorpio Ken Latta Sun November 11 1951 Scorpio Michael Doyle Wed November 12 1969 Scorpio Neil K. It was her first solo album after her stint with Fairground Attraction. It has recently be re-issued (with a couple of bonus songs on there) which is a good thing, since it's been out of print for awhile and is pretty darn good. I have a copy of the original thanks to Neile here on ecto (hi neile), so i have been lucky. now that i know there's a re-issue, i might have to track that down though.... of course Charley has been hording two copies of the original (greedy) but i won't hold that against him. anyway. her latest "new" CD is CANDYFLOSS AND MEDICINE which i actually have not gotten around to getting. i hear it is pretty good, better than her previous album (EDDI READER) which i thought was only okay, though not as good as MIRMAMA, which i thought was better than okay. as for the best of Fairground Attraction, i do believe the title is THE VERY BEST OF FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION, FEATURING EDDI READER, or FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION, FEATURING EDDI READER. rather creative eh? for more information on MS READER or her previous works with FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION check out http://sun1.bham.ac.uk/doveral/honey/ which is the unofficial webpage, managed by Adrian Dover, the administrator of HONEYCHILDREN which is the mailing list for EDDI READER. that was a shorter email than usual for me wasn't it? love irvin Forum for Contemporary Art 3540 Washington Avenue St. Louis, MO 63103 314/535.4660 314/535.1226 (fax) forum@inlink.com November 7, 1997 to January 3, 1998 Sabina Ott: Everywhere There is Somewhere ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 1997 14:04:56 -0500 From: "Kenn" Subject: Janis Ian I thought some of you might enjoy reading this. The article appears in = Issue 7.47 (Nov. 14, 1997) of HX, a gay and lesbian party paper. (Hence, = the disparate attention to Ian=A2s sexual orientation.) ***************************************************************************= ********** Eons of Ian - A =A160s Lesbian Folksinger Transcends Time With An Album Of = New Music For The 90s =20 At 46, Janis Ian has a list of accomplishments that reads like that of an = aged, retired musician who could be comfortably resting on her laurels: = In 1966, when she was only 15 years old, =22Society=27s Child,=22 her = single about interracial love, caused a flurry of controversy. That same = year, she earned the first of nine Grammy nominations, and less than 10 = years later, her hit =22At Seventeen=22 became a smash and the album it = appeared on, Between the Lines, sold a million copies. Since then, Ian = has been outed as a lesbian by The Village Voice, heralded for outing = herself years later in The Advocate, nominated for a Grammy following the = release of a comeback album in 1993, criticized for moving to Nashville = because of a possible public relations disaster for her career and = respected as a writer for her regular columns in publications including = The Advocate and The Performing Songwriter. But Ian has not rested. She still plays at clubs around the country and = churns out columns. And last month, she released her latest album, Hunger = (Windham Hill) - a powerful collection of songs about love, loneliness, = yearning and nostalgia, including one track, *Searching for America,* on = which she is joined by the song=A2s producer, Ani DeFranco (whom Ian calls = an *unmitigated joy*). Yet despite her numerous successes, Ian=A2s career is an ironic one. Many = people still don=A2t know who she is, and a number of those who do know = can=A2t seem to recall anything she=A2s done except for *Soecity=A2s = Child* or the venerable *At Seventeen.* Just this past summer, in fact, = Ian says the organizers of the Lilith Fair tour told her that she was *too = old and not hip enough* to partake in the women=A2s music festival. But = she takes it all in stride. *It=A2s not in the nature of what I do to be hip,* Ian says with a laugh. = But then she admits, *I used to long for it. I realize a lot of it is = biological - if you are blonde or tall or have a nice collarbone.* Ian = isn=A2t blonde and tall, but is a slight brunette, whose trademark puff of = frizzy hair frames a face that is pretty and a bit seasoned. *Maybe by not being hip, I=A2ve developed in ways that most people = won=A2t,* she concludes, following up a thought about her numerous = contemporaries who have been *coasting* along on fame garnered from old = hits. *It really irritates me because it=A2s laziness,* she says. *I = just don=A2t settle. If something=A2s not good enough, it doesn=A2t go = out.* Perhaps Ian is a worker and not a coaster, she says, because she has = chosen to lead a *riskier life* than many. In 1986, for example, she made = what was seen as a drastic move from Los Angeles to a city that she loves = - - Nashville. *People were telling me to lie about it,* she says, = recalling the warnings about how such a move could ruin her image and = career. But, she says, *L.A. had a lot of commercial stuff coming out of = it, and in Nashville, people were still trying to be great.* Now, still = living there with her partner of eight years who is a law student, she has = no intentions of leaving the place where she is known to many but = surrounded by enough bigger stars to live a *low-profile* existence among = the locals. *There are people like Chet Atkins,* she laughs. *They = don=A2t need to be bothering with Janis Ian.* Another career risk, she says, is that she now performs without the aid of = a backup band. *There=A2s nowhere to hide,* she says. *That=A2s a big = risk.* While she says that she isn=A2t necessarily *thrilled* about the = risks she has taken, she is relieved that they are only a part of her work = and not her personal life. That wasn=A2t the case 22 years ago, when Ian was outed in a Village Voice = story. *I went to bed for two days,* she says of her reaction. While her = family, friends, lover and record company had already known about her = sexual orientation, she says, *All of a sudden, I was having to deal with = the world knowing.* At that time, she adds, she had no support system and = knew hardly any other gay people. *It was very lonely. And very scary.* = In addition, she recalls, *I didn=A2t want to be part of the women=A2s = music movement. I felt that was confining.* When Ian gave her official yep-I=A2m-gay story to The Advocate in 1993, it = was a different matter. *It made no difference to my life, day to day,* = she says. All that changed then was that she *became an educator.* For now, Ian plans to enjoy the success of Hunger for a while. *I really = like this album,* she says - as have the critics. She also hopes to spend = quality time at home doing some more writing. And, as always, she plans = to stay musically inspired by using her successful formula: *You search. = You hope. You leave yourself open.* ***************************************************************************= ********** I was especially interested by the brush-off Ian was dealt by the Lilith = Fair organizers. Sarah McLachlan was definitely one of those people = involved in organizing LF. Was she actually one of the people who gave = Janis Ian the thumbs-down with regard to any possibility of appearing at = LF? Anyone else heard anything about this? Also... has anyone heard Janis=27 new album? How is it? Peace. Kenn ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Nov 1997 13:50:51 -0500 From: meredith Subject: new releases Hi!
