Wish I could have been there... Since I haven't seen anything about it in ecto digests the last few days, I thought I'd forward it to you guys. Enjoy. Larry (hernandl@mmsi.com/alundra@flash.net) ==================================================================== Subject: Memories of the Laura Nyro benefit concert 10/27/97 Date: Sun, 02 Nov 1997 23:42:26 -0500 From: Glen Stegner To: glen@stegner.com - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello again, all Laura Nyro fans out there! Well, the Memorial Benefit Concert in honor of Laura Nyro happened last week in New York City. I attended the show with several good friends, some of whom are regular visitors and contributors to the Nyro website. It was a fantastic and mind-blowing evening. There is so much discussion going on about it right now, and I thought that many of you were curious to find out what it was all about, so I decided to post a special "Fans' Memories" page to the Laura Nyro website. The discussion has been taking place on the Laura Nyro discussion room at Cafe Utne. So far I have included five fans' accounts of the evening. I have also included pictures of most of the artists who performed (not live pictures from the show, however). Also, I posted a new article which recently appeared in the New York Times. You can find it at the top of the Articles section. Here are the web addresses of the new additions as well as Cafe Utne where all the chat is currently going on: Fans' Memories of the concert: http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~glens/beacon.html New York Times article: http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~glens/enigma.html Cafe Utne: http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~glens/cafeutne.html Enjoy the new material, and long live Laura Nyro! Yours truly, Glen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 10:35:22 -0700 (MST) From: Kelley Hays-Gilpin Subject: mollys Well, I finally figured out how to move stuff around in my e-mail a little bit, and am able to reproduce here a tidbit from Hear's Music e-zine regarding the Mollys of Tucson. The question came up earlier: is their first album, "Tidings of Comfort and Joy" available, and indeed it is, info. below. Oddly enough, it is not a holiday album--their treatment of the title song is rather fun and not that Christmas-y! La Llorona, as noted before, rocks. The traditional version ala Joan Baez is sad and slow and tragic--the story of a native woman married to a Conquistador who kills her children, then wanders the deserts weeping. The Mollys' take is urban Tucson hispanic--watch out you young girls, don't go out alone, she'll come for you! She's the boogie woman here. Disclaimer: I don't work for Hear's. I work for the State of Arizona. I just like to warm Hear's headphones when I get the rare chance. cheers, Kelley from the Hear's world music e-zine: The Mollys These truly original troubadours play with enough intensity and humor to get you up and dancing even if you have never heard the fusion of Southwestern folk and Celtic music before. Great lead vocals and guitar, awesome accordion, mandolin, tin whistle and down-right-dynamite drums are just the start! The Mollys also throw in Norteno (Mexican/American border music) vibes to give their sound a real kick. Slow airs and ballads are beautiful breaks between their fiery fiesta specials. The Mollys are as much fun as you can have with your kilts and cowboy boots on. - - The Mollys: Tidings of Comfort and Joy - $15.99 - - The Mollys: This Is My Round - $15.99 - - The Mollys: Hat Trick - $15.99 Hear's Music, Inc. 2508 North Campbell Avenue Tucson, AZ 85719 USA Ordering: 1-800-501-DISC (3472) Inquiries: 1-520-795-4494 Fax: 1-520-795-4824 E-Mail: sald@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 12:52:34 -0600 From: JEFFREY_HANSON@NSDGATE3.nsd.fmc.com (JEFFREY HANSON) Subject: Victoria Williams Participates in a new band with husband I read about this on Mineapolis' sidewalk website: http://twincities.sidewalk.com/whatsthedeal Anyone heard this? Ex-Jayhawker hawking Here's the first dividend of Mark Olson's quest to find himself in the Joshua Tree desert: a home-recorded, self-marketed album titled "The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers." Victoria Williams (Olson's wife) and Minneapolis instrumentalist Mike Russell make up the rest of the trio. The former Jayhawks co-leader tells Allstar magazine the 10-song album is "on the stark side" with a country-folk edge. Olson tells Allstar: "I've never felt I was a 'for the masses' guy, and for me to even try to be was putting myself in a place where I didn't belong." Thus, the record has no label, and Olson is selling it himself ($12). T-shirts, too. The address is: P.O Box 342, Joshua Tree, CA 92252. It's called "Independent Love Song" by Scarlet. The only CD that I can find that song on is from the very soundtrack where I first heard it. _Bed of Roses_ starring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson. I am dying to hear more from this group/person called "Scarlet" Does anyone know of a group, or perhaps another name that "Scarlet" is going by? TIA! - -Karin ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V3 #64 *************************
