Several such moments on > "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking"... Some real cryers on that one... I One thing I've noticed in common with a lot of these moments -- they tend to happen when a song resumes, often at a heightened level, after a pause. Dunno what that means... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 15:55:41 -0400 From: chris@neuron.uchc.edu (Chris Sampson) Subject: Re: Musical pilomotor responses Bob Keefer said... >Rick Wakeman's manic organ solo in the middle of "Roundabout." Of course! Thanks for reminding me of one such moment (possibly my first ever ) as "Bubbah" did vis-a-vis "Running Up That Hill"... I assume the particular moment comes with the first few notes, after the pause... This may well be my first memory of this phenomenon... On a related note, Bob refers to these as pilomotor responses, I recall some friend of a friend of my parents as saying once at a party, "I get off on chord changes". This was easily 15 to 20 years ago... I remember thinking at the time, that I didn't exactly know what he meant by this. Ecto-related stimulus: What first hooked me on Emily Bezar's music... "Rest Me Here" (which is *so* simple, yet *so* satisfying), "I Tear Down", "Just Like Orestes", "Rain In Calgary"... many others... Sooo passionate! Transcendant Musical-Pilomotor Response (TMPR) #7?: "'Round Midnight"... as 'sung'/played by Robert Wyatt... oh so sad! And others... some Harry Chapin songs, though I don't think this has as much (or anything) to do with the music as with the lyrics/stories... "Get On With It", "Corey's Comin'". Some other prog-rock-related examples: Stuff by Triumvirat... Old Genesis (I'm surprised nobody mentioned 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'!)... Even ELP... (embarrassed) "Memoirs of An Officer and a Gentleman", "From The Beginning". In concert, on CD, whenever, "Bonny Portmore" (most people are familiar with Loreena McKennitt's rendition) makes me cry. The first time I ever heard it was by a local Celtic band, Silver Arm, at a local (locally-owned) bookstore. It was embarrassing, trying not to cry (I mean, =sob=) there amongst all those people! No matter how many times I have heard this, this song does that to me. I guess I have some kind of deep tie to trees.... The other one that choked me up the first time I heard it and always does is "You're Aging Well", sung by Dar Williams and Joan Baez on the "Ring Them Bells" album. Soon to be posted: moments in music that make me have goosebumps or something similar :-) fleur - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Joanna M.
