For those who have no idea who I am, I'm a semi-retired sound engineer here in CT & I primarily run an archival management company now. Among many other things, I'm actively involved with Jewel & her mom Lenedra's efforts at preserving the Kilcher/Carroll family's recordings. I've also recently been asked to take over archive management for Cindy Lee Berryhill(who I've adored for many years) & Elizabeth Hummel (who I look forward to working with more). My interest in recording & archiving dates back to the early 70's when I began corresponding with & collecting performance recordings by Sandy Denny (still my #1 interest even though she's long gone) & her husband Trevor Lucas. Anyway...since I've seen so many posts from folks I respect & desperately miss from yesteryear on Jewel's list, I wanted to say hello to them & introduce myself to everyone else. Very pleased to know that you're here, however quietly. > My interest in recording & archiving dates back to the early 70's >when I began corresponding with & collecting performance recordings >by Sandy Denny (still my #1 interest even though she's long gone) & >her husband Trevor Lucas. Ah, Sandy Denny. She's an abiding love of mine, too. I still strongly remember the first time I heard her voice when a friend of mine played a side of the Electric Music compilation that came out in the 70s for me. When "Tam Lin" came on it blew the top off my head and I've never been the same. I think it was the day I acquired both my love of female vocals and of electrified traditional music. Sandy has a voice and the power to use it to make songs come alive like no one else--the only downside to her career is that it was cut off too soon (for those of you who don't know her work, she died sometime in '79 or '80 in her early 30s). Well, and there's the cheesy 70s production of _Rendezvous_ and _Like an Old-Fashioned Waltz_, but that wasn't her fault. Those of you who haven't heard her, if you have any interest in 70s pop or electric folk, get yourself to a disc store and pick up a copy of her greatest hits, released by Ryko, or if you're an electric folk fan, start directly with Fairport Convention's _Liege and Lief_. Listen to either of those often enough, and that will force you to pick up Ryko's boxed set of her work _Who Knows Where the Time Goes_, and then of course you'll have to get Fairport Convention's _Liege and Lief_ if that isn't the one you started with, and the self-titled Fotheringay group album, and her other two original solo albums _Sandy_ and _The Ravens and the Northstar Grassmen_. And then of course you'll pick up _Rendezvous_ and _Like an Old-Fashioned Waltz_ to have a complete collection of her original solo releases, then the other Fairport albums she sings on, then the Attic Tapes, and then you'll have a nice chunk of your cd space dedicated to her work, just like I do. Either that or you need to go and get your ears cleaned out and your musical tastes adjusted. ;) It may take time to get used to the kind of music she does if that's not already in your listening repertoire, but there's nothing like the evocative power of Sandy's voice. Tori, Jewel, Kate, Veda, Sarah, none of the ectophiles' goddesses have anything on her in terms of being able to use her voice in a way that gives me shivers. I'd listen to her sing phone book listings. I've been collecting whatever trickles out from the various archives of her work, except I don't have the full attic tape collection, just the cd version that came out. I did manage to get a copy of that BBC appearances collection that appeared from Strange Fruit--I'd heard that wasn't a boot but a legitimate release, even though it was apparently only available for one day! - --Neile n.r. This is my first post to ecto, although I've been a subscriber for some time. (At least I *think* this will be my first post if I do it right. I am the friend with whom Richard K. (from Maine...Hi Richard!) had the three hour conversation in Borders on his way through Kansas City. I do believe that this was mentioned in his post that sparked the lengthy Borders vs. indies stream of commentary. (Personal note--the Borders here in KC is very much like an indie store...lots of support for local musical artists and authors and a very cool staff. Plus, I first heard HTR on a listening station there...God bless 'em!). Anyway, I wanted to comment on the Sandy Denny post. I recently picked up a "best of" anthology which includes 16 songs. It was released in 1987 through Hannibal Records. Included are cuts from "Sandy", "Rendezvous", "Fotheringay", and "Liege and Lief" (Fairport Convention). There are a few others as well. I have no idea if it is still in print as I picked it up used, but it's a good way to get an idea of her work. Of course, probably the most well-known performance (at least to those main-streamers here in the U.S. of A.) is her guest vocal on "The Battle of Evermore" from Led Zeppelin IV. From what I've read (and I have absolutely *no* idea if this is even remotely true) she died of a broken neck after falling down a staircase at Boleskine House--Jimmy Page's home on Loch Ness. This was in the late 70's. Probably more fiction than fact, but I've come across the story more than once. So anyway...that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! Michael Eck is a massive fellow with a guitar who sings about things like trains and whiskey and whom I found not particularly interesting. I liked Elissa Peimer's set. She plays lead guitar, then there's a bass player and a guy behind the drumset and a girl who plays odd percussion like a bongo and some oversize thing you shake (given what I learned about fishes, this one's probably called a "whale"). The sound was light and poppy, but intelligent. The group was interesting visually: two guys, two girls, all with permed or frizzy brown hair. Elissa and the bass player guy had long hair; the two percussion players had short hair. The bass player had a 70s hippie look; the others looked Eastern European Jewish. Elissa's upbeat attitude and nice voice made for a fun set. Not what I'd call "ecto" though. I really didn't care for Lionfish, which was fronted by one of these types who tries to project the image of being a smokin', drinkin', tough bitch who'll still wail in agony and bleed all over you. That saved me the cost of renting one questionable flick...;-) Philip David 10/16/1997 ______________________________________ http://www.li.net/~philipda/dianaw.htm [The Diane Wolkstein Pages] ______________________________________ "The morning is always wiser than the evening." - - Diane Wolkstein. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 21:57:59 +0000 From: Silme@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Sandy Denny (was re: "Hello, very nice to be here") JavaHo@aol.com wrote: > > Anyway, I wanted to comment on the Sandy Denny post. I dunno--a friend just said he thought I'd like it and I was wondering if anyone on ecto knew of her. This friend has been wrong about my tastes before, even though he is a Happy fan. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 22:27:17 -0700 From: neile@sff.net (Neile Graham) Subject: Re: Sandy Denny (was re: "Hello, very nice to be here") At 2:57 PM 10/16/97, Silme@ix.netcom.com wrote: >JavaHo@aol.com wrote: > >> >> Anyway, I wanted to comment on the Sandy Denny post. It has been out on cd for a long time. I bought the version that is album-sized & uses the same booklet as for the vinyl version--they just put a plastic tray in that holds the 3 jewelboxes. Now they have a regular jewel-box sized version on disc so the booklet is jewelbox-sized too. It's such a great set! - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V3 #44 *************************
