First, to relate the event that totally made my night: I got an e-mail from Katharina Franck!!! Apparently if you post a question on the guest book at the Rainbirds web site, she's the one who answers you back. That ranks up there as one of the most random things ever to happen to me on the net. :) (BTW, it does appear that the new Rainbirds album _Forever_ will be released internationally, including the U.S., but there's nothing concrete yet.) Paul, how was Mila Drumke last night? As is often the case with mid-week NYC shows, it just wasn't in the cards for us. Oh well. I really don't want to continue the whole Cassini thing, but I do want to point out that many of the people responsible for making the final decision to launch live with their families in the area around the Kennedy Space Center. I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next X-phile, but you can't tell me that a bunch of government employees would willingly put their children in danger all in the name of Science and/or the Mighty Buck. As for me, I cheered when I heard that the launch went off without a hitch - -- I wasn't worried, even considering that my parents live right at ground zero, and were watching the launch from their front lawn. Once again, the truth triumphs over blind hysteria. dave opined: >On the WXPN topic... Sounds like WFUV. Turn it on and within a half hour you're guaranteed to hear the Jayhawks, Wilco, Counting Crows, and the Dave Matthews Band. Bleagh. It's gotten even worse since they brought over former VH-1 VJ Meg Griffin from commercial radio to cover the afternoon drive-time slot (I'm convinced that was to increase their ratings/member base so they can get more government funding). Of course, occasionally they will do something cool like play Cindy Lee Berryhill, like they did this morning, or dig out an old Victoria Williams tune, or play something from _The Kick Inside_. But it's been a while since they've introduced me to a dynamite new artist, like Susan McKeown or Dar Williams or Richard Shindell. (In fact, I haven't heard anything to indicate that they've even added Richard's latest album to their library!) Sigh. Which reminds me, it's time to pledge more $$$ to WPKN. :) sherlyn inquired: >1) Does anyone know any online record stores in Canada? A&B Sounds, in Vancouver . (Ani DiFranco was asked to play there only once; and the guy in charge looked *really* uncomfortable as he surveyed the preponderance of electric instruments before The Nields took the stage...) The auditorium really is quite small, though, Joe -- not what you think. It's more of a tiny theater. >Last Saturday night _The Midnight Special_ on WFMT in Chicago did an >interview with Richard Shindell. I can't find any audio files anywhere on the web site -- is the URL correct? Or am I just blind? Nick reported: >WFMU NOW BROADCASTING ON THE INTERNET Wow -- haven't they been up and running for a couple months now? That's still way cool. (In case anyone's been wondering what it took to convince woj that it would be ok to move to Connecticut, I think this is really what did it. ;) Joe informed: >The Rolling Stones having taken an unexpected sick day, tonight at 10 PM >EST on Live at the 10 Spot on MTV, they're featuring the fabulous Gail >Ann Dorsey Band! I caught only the last few minutes, but it was pretty interesting. Especially interesting was the venue: the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY (where I almost saw Ani DiFranco earlier this year). It kind of boggled my mind to think that I'd driven through a town containing David Bowie only a couple hours before on my way home from work. :) I wonder where they got the audience -- did they stuff Purchase College students onto a bus, or what? Richard commented: >There are also Bull Moose stores in Windham, Lewiston, Brunswick, and >Portsmouth NH. And none other than Happy Tyler Rhodes thinks BM is a >nifty place... a ringing endorsement in MY book :) Works for me. :) Alas, this coming weekend I had originally planned to be in Maine (Homecoming weekend at the old sod, you know), but life intervened and then I made these plans to go see Susan McKeown play on both Friday and Saturday nights, and well, you know how things go. Sigh. I do hope to get up there sometime in the not-too-distant future, though... Re Sarah live in Boston: >An enjoyable experience, especially considering the tariff: $5.10 in >subway tokens. *What* is wrong with me? I read this report, and looked at the calendar and reminded myself that she's playing in NYC tonight and I'm not there, and I felt nary a pang of regret. I agree, FWIW. Yep, that's right - the Babes were formed after one of Christine's singer/songwriter retreats at Martha's Vineyard. The original lineup was Christine Lavin, Patty Larkin, Megon McDonough and Sally Fingerett. After Patty Larkin left (I think right after she got signed to Windham Hill/High Street), Julie Gold of "From a Distance" fame came in to replace her. Then, Julie left (I think she had too many other commitments) and was replaced by Debi Smith. Now Christine's left and has been replaced by Camille West. Kristina Olsen and Cheryl Wheeler have also been fill-in babes at one point or another. I guess Christine's gazillion other commitments finally got the better of her or something... > >pps - Dar Williams is coming to Australia next March!!! > > Wow. (Sorry, but she was embarrassingly bad. Not only the people with whom I attended the show thought so independently of one another, but she got only lukewarm response from the audience as a whole. The lines for the bathrooms when she was singing her solo songs were really long. I felt bad for her, actually.) >Whoa... back up the truck! Lucy Lawless? In "Grease"? Is >this serious???? Hahahaha!! (Sorry, but Xena... as Sandy? >That's just too funny!) No, actually, she's playing Rizzo. This production has done a revolving-door thing with the character, putting "big name" stars in the role to boost ticket sales. I think that's generally pretty cheezy, but the word on the street is that Ms. Lawless has been one of the better Rizzos, and she's certainly paid off big at the box office. All those crazed Xenites, you know. It's pretty funny. (The slogan for the accompanying ad campaign was, "You can't be a warrior princess all your life!". ) >Not enough sleep and too much caffeine... I think my dream in life is to *be* Brian Eno. The book came out last year. It's his diary from 1995, plus various articles, essays, and email from over the years. I just picked up a really good British magazine, Gramophone Exploration #2, which contains a lot of stuff on contemporary music, including an interview with Eno. It also has a CD which, on its CD-ROM track, contains the Koan generative music software. I found it at the Tower in Washington, DC, so other Towers should have it. n.p.
