Hi, I'm a big Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy fan, and have been wondering for some time whether there is a list or a Roches fan page on the WWW that anyone might know of? Where better to ask than here! :-) It's interesting how long it took for me to take to their latest, _Can We Go Home Now_. Like all their other CD's, I bought it within a couple weeks of its release, but soon put it away as it didn't "hit" me as usual. In the last month, however, I've rediscovered it, if you will, and it's since been one of the most-played discs in my collection. It must have been me... If anyone could point me to a Roches list or page, I'd be all grateful. Larry H. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 19:24:48 -0500 From: ariana@kbp.com Subject: Dar Williams at Town Hall I saw Dar Williams on Saturday. I really enjoyed her show. She sounded great with the band but some times the stuff the drummer would do would irritate me for some strange reason. It also seemed like that Dar got a make over. Her hair was dyed blonde and she looked like she was in better shape then the times before that I've seen her. I was surprised to find that she was selling t-shirts. I liked them and lately I don't like most concert t-shirts. One was in purple and said "I think I put my shirt on backwards." The other was the picture from the album cover. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 18:17:18 -0500 (CDT) From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Meth's clarification On Sun, 28 Sep 1997, meredith wrote: > >And of course you'll see me at Susan's show Thursday... > > We're probably going to the late show (out of necessity, not because we > really prefer that time slot on a weeknight). The three hour trip home after a late Bottom Line show is a bit too much to deal with on a weeknight. :) And yes Meredith, I know you already knew that. A month ago, she and Chris moved (with a little help from me and some other friends) to a nicer, bigger apartment. They have still not unpacked a lot of stuff, and Vickie's computer has apparently suffered some kind of electrical shock due to the current in that particular outlet being polarized the wrong way, or something to that effect. In the meantime, her email (lists and otherwise) continues to pile up. In any case, our beloved EctoMa says to say hi to everyone, and that while her onlineness is in flux right now, you still can reach her offline at 4911 N. Sawyer Ave. #3, Chicago, IL 60625, (773) 583-7843. She points out to afficianados of Happy's second album of the modern era that the latter was chosen for its translatability into 58-EQUI-3, at least if you have the letter Q on your phone, which she does and most people admittedly don't. (She had tried for a number with ECTO [her first choice], KATE, HAPPY, RHODES, or possibly something else relevant imbedded under the alphanumeric conversion paradigm, but the telco was fresh out in her service area.) With the number of physical scientists and engineers on this list, though, the concept of the Implied Q should be right at home, though. A quick peek turns up all sorts of stuff...a useful starting point was: +roches +music +official which after 2 links got me to: http://www.kurtzman.com/Roches/ which looks to have just about anything you could want...looks like the GaffaWeb of Rochedom (news/discography/lyrics/videography/ televideography/etc). Burka" Subject: _Black Canvas_ Ahhhhh. New Happy. Well, sort of...new Happy vocals, in any event. My copy of Project Lo's new album arrived today, and I must say I'm quite taken by it. Being the sort of obsessive fan I am, I'd have bought this disc just for the two tracks Happy sings on, but honestly, I like the rest of it enough to have bought it too. Mostly instrumental, it veers from jazz to trancey ambient goodness all the while careening through progrock flavo' bits. A tasty treat to be sure, though not the least crunchy. "Mercy Street" has long been one of my fave Gabriel tunes, and it's pretty much heaven to hear Happy sing it. Her vocals were recorded by Kevin at, "Aural Gratification Studios, Bearsville, NY"...want to explain that one, Kevin? Y'all get your very own studio these days? No longer using Cathedral Sound? Anyway, Kevin did the recording, and Happy arranged and produced her vox...and it *shows*. Classic multi-tracking on this one. The song is sung in a rather low key, but the higher bvox are gorgeous. The other song, "Perfection" is also very cool; easier to just listen to the sample online at the Artists Shop homepage (www.artist-shop.com) This is a definite bonus in the current dry spell...hard to believe that in all the years I've been a Happy fan (over 7!), I've never had such a long wait between albums. I must also add that Caryn Lin is an *intensely* cool violinist. Any album recommendations? jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 21:20:27 -0400 From: "Jeffrey C. He always woke before me, and started the day by relieving whatever pressure had built up in his body through a seemingly endless stream of farts and belches. Much worse than an alarm clock. It always prompted me to roll over and flip on my stereo, which tended to have a Cramps disc in it, as that was the music I had found was most annoying to him. Okay, so I *really* should be in bed now, but I just have to share. :) The Scrappy Bitch Tour hit the Mercury Lounge in NYC tonight like a ton o' bricks. Veda Hille won the skirmish this evening, so she got to start (this bit was amusing even though the Merc had already predetermined the order as being Veda at 9, Oh Susanna at 10, and Kinnie Starr at 11). She presented 45 minutes of positive brilliance, mostly at the piano, though she opened with two guitar songs ("INSTRUCTIONS" and "Slumber Queen"), and ended with one ("Bellyfish"), that last also accompanied by Oh Susanna on piano and K. Starr on backing vocals. Also on the set list were, in no particular order, "With No Caring", "Strange, Sad", "Rhapsody", "One Hot Summer", and two songs of the Emily Carr cycle ("Pause" and the one about the birds). I was satisfied to notice that there were people in the room whom I did not know who were as into her music as I was. :) Veda was in a great mood, and she was really *on*. She got a much better reception than Oh Susanna, whose set we stuck around for. Oh Susanna has a great voice, but imho all of her songs sound the same, and given a week or so to practice I could probably play the guitar better than she does. Veda joined her on the piano for two songs, which sparkled in a way that the others just didn't. The difference was really quite astonishing. I actually felt kind of bad for the other two performers, because Veda is so obviously more talented than they are, it must be horrible to have to follow her. (Reading that it sounds really catty, but it's the truth -- the other two are both good, but Veda is clearly in a class above. Anyway.) As it was growing late we didn't stick around for Kinnie Starr's set, but I plan to catch her tomorrow night. I'm sure we missed a really cool contribution by Veda to that part of the show, but hey. I got a chance to chat with Veda for a few minutes, and she said that she's having a really great time on this tour, which is a good thing. Her November appearance at The Bottom Line is going to be part of the new "Nightbirds" series, featuring female singer/songwriters. Like Required Listening, she'll be on the bill with three other performers. I was disappointed to learn we will still have to wait for a full set with the band in NYC, but I'm sure that will only be a matter of time. :) I'll be at the show in November regardless. Oh yeah, one other seriously cool thing about tonight was the fact that Robert Moog (as in the Moog synthesizer) was in the audience, accompanying someone from the trajectory list, and I got to meet him! Talk about living legends... I actually studied him in college (Introduction To Experimental Music :), and I blathered on at him like an idiot about that for a few minutes. :P He was very gracious, though. I didn't get a chance to ask him afterwards what he thought of the show, but he was still there at the end, which I guess is a good sign. :) Greatly looking forward to tomorrow night's installment, +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | Boonton, NJ USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 21:13:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Horter3@aol.com Subject: Help on LRT origins, Dear Janes Hi!
