Any other fans out here? I love Kristina. She fits what seems to be a standard for me - a writer who can be hysterically funny and make you cry all in a brief moment. And she's a fabulous guitar player. I'm new around here - (thanks Ellen). And for that list, my birthday is next week (10/4). "fan" is probably too strong a word, but i have really enjoyed her live performances and rather like her last few records, especially the latest, _perishable fruit_, which may be one of the most rhythmically compelling albums i've heard since veda hille's _spine_. woj n.p. wfmu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 1997 22:58:50 +0200 (MET DST) From: Juergen Stuber Subject: Re: Kristina Olsen Emmy May Lombaerts wrote: > Hiya folks, >=20 > Well, I haven't been posting here much lately and have > been mainly lurking, but what I've been meaning to ask for > a while is whether anyone here has heard of Kristina > Olsen. I bought her 'live around the world' CD recently. The blues is ok, but what really made my day were her stories, absolutely hilarious. Here's an interesting coincidence: There I was, in a room so crowded the only room left was two spots on the bench at the back, next to me. Guess who should come in part way into the set and sit down right next to me? Susan McKeown! It was nice to finally meet her in person, even if we only exchanged a few words. I wish I'd had the presence of mind to ask her to sign my copy of *Bones,* which I just happened to have had in my backpack. Mila's show was pleasant, and I like her voice, but nothing she did really grabbed me. Perhaps it was the coffeehousish (ugh, what a coinage) atmosphere of the solo set. I guess I'll go over to Arlene's Grocery after class Tuesday night to see what she sounds like with the band. And of course you'll see me at Susan's show Thursday... He is a Canadian > Singer/Songwriter, who is rumored to be excellent. Any of you know better or > more? Heh. Ron Sexsmith was one of the most reviled folk to be mentioned often on ecto over the last several years. He opened on the Sarah McLachlan/Chieftains tour back in summer of ... uh, '95, wasn't it? The general consensus was that he was absolutely miserable. I remember going to the show's stop in DC after reading about the first several nights of the tour on ecto (the DC stop was, I think, number 3 or 4 of the tour), and wondering if this fellow could possibly be as bad as I'd read. He was. I've never actually heard one of his albums. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 01:51:53 -0400 From: Dan Stark Subject: Re: Sessions PBS At 08:35 PM 9/27/97 -0400, Horter3@aol.com wrote: >> Ron Sexsmith(who?) >I don't know much about him, but I have heard the name,as Tara McLean was >opening for him on one of her runs across the country. He played after Tara Maclean on part of her tour, and we had to leave after 2 songs because we were sitting right up front and couldn't stop laughing. Not at his jokes either...although he does carry on with some pretty funny, self-deprecating banter between songs ("It's nice to see you all. You DO know Tara has finished playing, right?").
