I totally agree on that. I've had my copy in the Macintosh since yesterday, and it's fantastic. More mellow than "The Landing" but superb vokal and sound makes this album a real "winner". Since it's the first time I respond to this list, I'm very happy to see how much good music/artists you folks are into. Specially happy to see that Jonatha Brook & The Story, Holly Cole and David Wilcox is on "your lists". I have some suggestions myself: Dee Carstensen http://www.songs.com/dee/index.html - - Great singer/songwriter, somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Loreena McKennitt. Holly Palmer http://www.RepriseRec.com/Reprise_HTML_Pages/HollyDir/main.html - - One of the musicindustries best kept secrets. A real groovy songwriter. Oystein Sevag http://www.sevag.com - - Moody Norwegian instrumentalist (New album "The Bridge" in US this week). It's mainly about Lilith's Fair, but also about her writers block and 'Surfacing', an album which Sarah herself describes as "midnight music". Of course the interview's in Dutch. It's kinda strange, as I don't think 'Surfacing' has been officially released over here (though it is available as an import), and she seems very little known here. I did hear 'Building a mystery' on the radio last week, and that dj was quite enthousiastic about the album. Unfortunately that was around 2:30 at night - not many people listening at that time I suppose. Best wishes, Marion - ---------------------- n.p. It contains the album version of Easy and 2 more mixes of that song, but the interesting part is the last song ... wait I'll maybe put the EP in my CD-player first ... oh ok. From the liner notes : At the end of the recording of Lucia we got the sad news that Jeff Buckley had died. We all loved - and shared a deep respect for his music. We wrote and recorded Passing Thing as a tribute. Passing thing was recorded at studio Sonic Electronic the 15th of June 1997. The song is so wonderful in itself, Anne Marie Almedal is really displaying the loss of a great musician. At times I would say it reminds me of Innocence Mission. I would say that the EP is worth it just for that song alone. Velvet Belly - Lucia (BMG/Arista) 1. Trick 2. Easy 3. Oystercatcher (lyrics: Dag Olsvik) 4. Standstill 5. Fast & Far Away 6. The Station 7. Drift (lyrics : Lucy van der Drift) 8. Unreal 9. Restless 10. Our Happiness Lyrics by Anne Marie Almedal except where noted. Music by Velvet Belly I'm trying to find the words to express what I feel about Lucia. It is just so amazing. It is just like they have taken everything they've done before added somewhat of Bjoerk and made an album that will be one of the best of the 90s. It is quite alot rougher than The Landing, though it still got the same wonderful feeling to it. What I like the most is that they've released 5 albums where only the 2 first are alike in style. Window Tree introduced the loops they used on The Landing, but it got a different feel to it. The vocal harmonies are even better on this album. The music is built around Anne Marie's voice which is more mature. Mostly I like to find out where the voice is in the soundscape, and here the music is woven around the vocals without being muffled or anything. The sound is very complex, but it is far from being overdone. All credits for that to Erik Honore, who really isa magician, and the band for trusting his work this much. The songs : Trick is probably the perfect opening showing off what lives in Anne Marie's voice. Her singing has improved so much the last year, and I've always thought she was good. It is really hard to explain what it feels like listening to this song, it got to be experienced. Easy is the second song and also the first single from the album. It continues in the same wonderful way. Here the rough sound from the first track is loosening up, and we sort of travels back in time to The landing, before we again are back with Oystercatcher where we are again introduced to the roughness from Trick. No other band are so good with these slow underlaying rythms with faster ones working on top of them. And all of it built around those gorgeous vocals. Standstill shows us another side of the band ... They can really do ballads as well. This time the strings are playing a major part for the first time on any of their albums. I feel the cold work through my spine so beautiful is it. The song is moving directly into Fast & Far Away bringing the strings with it ... This is as close to a pop-song they get before the loops are back soon enough with The Station. This is what makes this album so incredible .... the songs are so varied that you never have the chance to get bored. Our Happiness closes the album and it is one of those songs that makes you want to listen to the album all over again just like Happy is so good at doing. Thanks to Velvet Belly for again releasing an incredible album!!! That was it I guess ... hard to express my feelings of this album in words I don't even have in norwegian. *hugs* Yngve - -- n.p Velvet Belly - Lucia (of course) ________________________________________________________________ Yngve Hauge | __ ___ __ | | _ www: http://aure.himolde.no/~yngveh/ |-- | | | ||-- |_||| |_ Irc-nick: One_Alien, (_)Yngve_ |__ |__ | |__|| | |||_|_ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 1997 14:23:53 -0800 From: "Ron Starr" Subject: Before Beautiful South Since someone brought up Beautiful South... I was anxiously waiting for the new Bjork, but started getting really worried when almost every magazine review said it was a masterpiece. Since I rarely agree with the critics, I knew I was in trouble. Thus far, I just can't get into _Homogenic_. I think both _Debut_ and _Post_ are classics, but _Homogenic_ is doing nothing for me. There are a couple of really great songs like "Joga" and "Bachelorette," which combine dramatic orchestration with electronic beats to wonderful effect. But most of the other songs are sorely lacking any melody and are often accompanied by very minimal (and often annoying) beats. And, as much as I love weird vocalizations, the caterwauling Bjork does toward the end of "Pluto" borders on the unlistenable. But I love Bjork and often have highly negative reactions to "difficult" albums on the first couple of listens. So, I'm continuing to play _Homogenic_ in hopes of one day appreciating it. But I doubt I will ever rank it up there with _Debut_ and _Post_. As for The Sundays' _Static & Silence_, I really haven't listened to it enough to form an opinion. It sounds very pleasant on first listen, but no tracks really stand out except for "Summertime," which is definitely one of their finer moments. Joseph Schwantner is a Chicago-born composer who had a brief career in the jazz world...he's been writing large-scale works since 1969, but this seems to be the first major label release of any of his music: 1)Velocities (Moto perpetuo) for solo marimba 2)Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra a)Con forza b)Misterioso c)Ritmico con brio 3)New Morning for the World: "Daybreak of Freedom" (narrated by Vernon E. Jordan, Jr.) Leonard Slatkin conducts the National Symphony Orchestra on everything but "Velocities." For those picking this one up cold, "Velocities" and "New Morning..." are clearly the most accessible works on the album; "Velocities" sounds very much in the spirit of EG's _Light in Darkness_ set (also RCA Red Seal). The Concerto is the thorniest of the lot, with a lot of dissonance running throughout (the "Misterioso" movement is the best point in the work for me); some might be amused by the extended percussion run towards the end of the last movement (not unlike the parodied drum solo?). None of these works are EG commissions, which is a little unusual, but I believe she played on each and every one of these works. "New Morning..." gets its texts from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but don't expect loud, ringing declarations here - everything is read in normal tone and at normal volume. Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. is probably best known for his print and radio commentaries, but he's also a senior partner in a law firm and was the Chairman of the Clinton Presidential Transition Board(!) in 1992... Those who can sample this at a listening station may want to do that first before buying...but I'd say I bought it for "Velocities" and "New Morning..." Those new to EG should probably start with her earlier albums (_Rhythm Song_ for the beginners, _Light in Darkness_ or _Rebounds: Concertos for Percussion_ for the more adventurous)...but 2 out of 3's not bad... Well, I clicked, and one thing lead to another, and before I knew it, I had been sitting in front of my computer for 700 hours and my eyeballs were hanging from the sockets and my butt had not a nerve left in it. But I had created a webpage. And part of it became a webpage for Happy Rhodes (which people have been asking me about for years anyway, so here ya go). I'm just a beginner, so don't expect something that would come out of, ya know, woj or Vickie Mapes (*ahem!*). The address is: http/www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/3450/terra.html This website is in support of *Terra Incognita* (formerly *Rhodeways*), the Happy Rhodes fanzine. Never heard of it? Damn. Check out the site. He also won the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for his "Aftertones of Infinity".
