I know some others may be interested as well (attn: Neile!) - ---pasted from an email to woj: --- >BTW, there was an interesting development at Sarah Slean's show that I went to tonight you might be interested in... when I got there, GEORGE KOLLER was playing the opening slot! On acoustic guitar, no less! Absolutely incredible! But when he passed along the regrets of the person who was *supposed* to open for Sarah but couldn't because of a sore throat, I almost fell off my chair. Would you believe.... Anhai????? > >Woj, I have been watching the club listings and scanning the local music news carefully for 2 years, ever since I got to Toronto, and so far there has been ONE reference to Anhai. Now, I go to a show I was planning on going to anyway, to find WHEN I ARRIVE that Anhai is on the bill... unreal huh? Too bad she wasn't there. > >But I asked George about her, and he said he'll be playing with her October the 8th, at either C'est What or the Rivoli, I can't remember which. You can bet I'll be there. - ----End of paste--- I was PSYCHED that such a cool artist like George opened for our little Sarah. Here's hoping he's the first of many. He mentioned he was playing with fellow Loreena luminaries Hugh Marsh and Rick Lazar as Spare Parts on Tuesday at C'est What. He said that they will be backing up a local female singer/songwriter to open the show and do their own thing later on. George said she's terrific, and given the level of talent he's used to performing with, I'm inclined to trust his judgment. :-) ****************** Friday night I saw BRAN VAN 3000, a sort of hip-hop-plus dancey poppey type band, in a packed-to-the-rafters Lee's Palace. They had a ridiculous number of people on stage (at one point I counted 10), apparently their full band is something like *26* members. They have 3 female vocalists, one of whom was spectacularly good, and 2 male vocalists (who do mostly rap-style vocals), and they rotate lead vox duties, although the males have a disproportionately large share. I found them somewhat uneven, about a half-dozen of their songs worked well for me and were really fun, especially the more upbeat dancey numbers. Particularly good was a cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2. However the rest of the time they were somewhat tiresome. Of course, it might just be that I maxxed out on my hip-hop capacity and couldn't handle anymore. :-) My sister, who is into the dance club scene, appreciated them somewhat more than I did. ***************** Saturday, as Dan mentioned, a bunch of people from the Jewel/Tara MacLean/Sarah McLachlan mailing lists came up for a show by Sarah Slean and Emm Gryner at C'est What. I won't say much since since Dan has already talked about the show and I've already probably talked too much about them here, but... Sarah Slean put on another great show as usual. Not only is she an incredibly talented artist, she is also an incredibly dear sweet person. She was supposed to have a percussionist present but he unfortunately didn't work out on Thursday so he got canned. The guy who played on her ep played with her at her ep release party a while back and he was fantastic (but expensive). Hopefully she'll be able to find another one who will work cheaply. Emm was also good, and debuted several new songs. She also debuted a band-in-a-box synth, which I have mixed feelings about. Some of the songs benefited from the extra instrumentation, but usually I love watching her play the piano, she is a very strong pianist. To those I promised cassettes and CDs to, I'm very sorry but I somehow managed to forget to get them signed. ****** Tonight I skipped a songwriter's workshop, which featured Sara Craig. Maybe I should have went, if I did, I would have a chance of being able to say I've seen every cool Canadian Sara(h) on Neile's list in 6 weeks: Sarah McLachlan, Sarah Slean, Sara Craig, and Sarah Harmer (Weeping Tile is playing here on Sat). **** Recent acquisitions: Melissa Ferrick, _Massive Blur_ Chad Richardson, _Two People_ Colorifics, _Living City_ <--- GREAT DISC! Chad Richardson is a great local straight-up pop-rock artist with absolutely manic live performances. So far this CD (his older one) hasn't really grabbed me like his live show (featuring songs from his new album) did, but I've only listened to a few songs so far. The Colorifics are a fantastically fun lounge band out of that hotbed of Canadian indie music, Vancouver. A definite throwback to another era, attending a live show by this band is like being in a time warp. The CD captures the atmosphere of relaxed comfy-chair fun of their live performances better than I expected it would. It features honey-sweet vocals from Lindsey Davis, and highly complementary vox from guitarist Bernie Boulanger. If you like lounge music, this CD is highly recommended. Finally! The following CDs showed up in my mailbox a few days ago: Milla: _The divine comedy_ Jane Siberry: _When I was a boy_ Dar Williams: _End of the summer_ The Nields: _Gotta get over Greta_ The past few days, I have practically only listened to these four CDs. So far, _The divine comedy_ is the album that hits me hardest, but the other three are also excellent. It's a shame that Milla has not released more CDs, but I understand that a new one is coming Real Soon Now[tm]? Anybody know when? With Dar Williams and The Nields, I knew beforehand what I could expect, as I already have Dar's _Mortal City_ and since I listened briefly to the Nields last summer, on my vacation in the US. _End of the summer_ really is an appropriate album to play right now, as it started snowing here on Sunday. *Sigh*. Only three months without snow on the ground. How much more depressing can it get? Guess it's time to start wearing real warm clothes, and to change to studded tyres on my bicycle. But I digress. As for Jane Siberry, WIWAB is different than what I had expected, but in a positive way. So far, my favourite song on WIWAB is "All the candles in the world". Dunno why, it just is. I think I will give WIWAB a little time to grow on me (which I am convinced it will) before I buy my next Jane Siberry album... I envy you to discover these for the first time. My absolute favourites Sandman arcs are _Brief lives_ (partly because it was drawn by the extraordinary Jill Thompson) and _The kindly ones_ the last one. Well there is one after it but I won't give its name because it is spoiler material. On the topic of Neil Gaiman, his most recent work, a child tale with Dave McKean the man behind the Sandman covers is also very good. Title: _The day I swapped my dad for 2 goldfish_. A good source of information is the Sandman FAQ available at an adress that you can found in the Vertigo FAQ posted recently to the rec.art.comics.info newsgroup. Since I am typing this offline I can't help you more, sorry. From memory there are now 8 TPBs reprinting every Sandman stories ever published. Then there are 2 mini-series about Death available on TPB under the name _The high cost of living_ and _Time of your life_. Speaking of comics, let me shamelessly plug one that I find completly ectophilic. It is called _Strangers in Paradise_ and basically tells the life of two girls, Katchoo and Francine. It is very well written, has humor, poetry, feelings, a great story and is beautifully drawn. It is hard for me to explain how deeply this comics touches me, it makes me laugh hard and cry the next page. I read a lot of comics, mainly indies or from the Vertigo line, but this one is the only that moves me so much. Trust me and pick the second TPB, _I dream of you_, I am sure you will like it. Back to the main topic of this list, music! I am now listening to the new Bjork album, _Homogenic_. I bought it today and haven't decided if I really like it. It sounds more techno than the previous ones but her voice has never sounded better IMO. My intuition is that it will grow on me really fast but that it lacks the depth of _Post_. Anyway, it is typical Bjork so if you liked the previous ones you can go for it. It sounds to me like most of the background loops were used on the last tour, can an expert confirm that? There is an album that I can't put out of the player, Dar Williams latest. I wasn't impressed by _the honesty room_ but after all the talk on ecto about _End of the summer_ this summer I had to give it a try. So the last time I went to London I bought it even if it cost 16UKP (that's 30$!) and once again, ecto was right. It is a masterpiece. It will very likely be my album of the year. On the other side I am disappointed by Katell Keineg 's_Jet_. I loved _O Seasons..._ so was very excited when I found her newest. It sounds to me less interesting and overall less original. Her voice is still here but she uses it in a "tame" way and her melodies don't catch me. And now something completly different... I traveled a lot lately, mainly by train, and this has lead me to wonder which CDs I should take with me for the trips and I realised that I always take the same ones that I choose depending on which way of transportation I will use. So this made me wonder, is it the same for you? Are some styles of music obvious for you for a given mode of transport and if yes, which ones? This sounds like a remake of the old "desert island discs" poll? It is but with a thematic excuse :-) Anyway, here are my picks: - Plane: ethereal stuff mostly Dead Can Dance and, more particularly, Lisa Gerrard's solo. Listening to _Sanvean_ while flying above clouds on an early morning is the closest I can get to heaven without meeting Morpheus' sister :-) Some Cocteau Twins from the _Heaven and Las Vegas_ period is good, too. - - Train/bus: Ani Di Franco, particularly _Living in clip_ which is perfect road music for me. Best moment: when I am slightly depressed by having to come back home after a great trip and that I feel sleepy and tired. Ani's music fits wonderfully with this kind of "sad and dreamy" mood. If I feel good some complicated and thought provocative music like some string quartet concertos (Elvis Costello's _The juliet letters_ is a good exemple) or _The Dreaming_. - - Car: When I have to drive I need something strong to keep me fully concentrated and not bored, so I go for Maria McKee preferably live. Good ol' U2 fits the bill too. To avoid at all costs: "serious" music that needs a lot of attention like Kate or Happy, except in traffic jams of course. - - Walk: in a city, ambient music is perfect if the circulation is scarce (esp. during the night) else something poppy to feel good while not being too distracted (Joan Osborne, Aimee Mann (ok, she is not poppy). I have a wonderful memory of a three hours walk around Edinburgh on a sleepless night with AG Ambient Vol.1 at full volume, it felt like this album was waiting for this moment.
