On that day, St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights will host "The Music of Nick Drake" night, featuring such artists as Robyn Hitchcock, Syd Straw, Richard Davies, and Katell Keineg performing their favorite Drake songs. Singer/ songwriter (and sometime R.E.M. sideman) Peter Holsapple will serve as music director for the evening, which will also feature such singer/ songwriters as Susan Cowsill (Holsapple's wife), Terri Roche of the Roches, cult artist Peter Blegvad, Mimi Goese, Rebecca Moore, and Sloane Wainwright, as well as musicians Dave Mansfield, Deni Bonet, Chris Cunningham, and Michelle Kinney. Some of the songs the artists are expected to perform are "I Was Mad," "River Man," "Poor Boy," "Cello Song," "Pink Moon," and "Black Eyed Dog." However, we were in Victoria this weekend and picked up a copy. I've only heard it once, but I think it's a little less rocking and country that _Cold Snap_, though there are a couple of driving songs, too. Overall, I'm guessing that this will appeal to both sides of their audience--the people who liked their folier _epee_ sound and those who liked the more rocking _Cold Snap_. Need to listen to it more, though. Also bought Mary Jane Lamond's new album--out on A&M so she's got a major label deal. For those of you not familiar with her name, you might have heard her singing on the "Sleepy Maggie" single from Ashley MacIsaac's album _Hi! How are you today_. She has a lovely voice and sings very traditional versions of Gaelic songs from Cape Breton. Highly, highly recommended for those who love more traditional rather than New Agey Celtic music, though the latter might like it, too. Also noticed that A&B Sound has _many_ copies of Veda's live _Women in Emotion_ disc. A&B has a web site (you can find it easily on Yahoo Canada) and their 800 ordering number, that works in from anywhere in North America is 1-800-663-0596. - --Neile n.p. Upon recommendation of older son at college, I bought younger son at home Sandman:Preludes & Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman. I remember quite an ecto-discussion here a while ago so I figured this was a knowledgeable crowd. I knew this was the first collection, but what do I get next? Can anyone point me to a good website or ten that tells what order to buy the books to get the whole arc of the story? For that matter, how many books are there? At $20 a pop, it ain't cheap, but then I had a look and while I understand the early stuff isn't as intense as what's to come it's a pretty amazing start! Thanks in advance for any tips on getting into this, and I suspect I'll be seeing a few of you at Old Swede's Church in November! First of all, I spent last night in Toronto at one of my favorite spots, C'est What. There I joined Steve Ito and several members of FTE, Jewel and Tara MacLean lists for a double bill with Toronto newcomers Sarah Slean and Emm Gryner. I have to say Sarah Slean has become my favorite new artist. She is a wonderful songwriter and pianist who is currently supplementing her music studies at the University of Toronto with some occasional live performances around town that are pure entertainment. Her onstage banter between songs is somewhat unpolished, but she is completely at home with a crowd and seems to talk about whatever comes to mind at the moment, often going off on tangents and then recovering with funny comments. She delivers this with bubbly, giddy, innocent exuberance, then the next thing you know she launches into a song with a performance outshining many verteran players. The comparisons to Tori Amos are about as close as one can get to describing her. Watching her play, one knows that Sarah Slean has a very bright future, and these are going to be shows to remember. Definitely worth the 4 hour drive in itself. Emm Gryner actually headlined the night's show, and she also put in a terrific performance. Emm has been performing club shows for a couple of years now, and her performance tends to be a bit tighter and more polished than Sarah's, although I'm way biased towards Sarah's songwriting and classical influence. Emm just got signed to Mercury though, who will distribute her CDs in both Canada and the U.S., so of the night's two performers Emm will be the first to make her way to most of you on tour and CD. I have a bit of a tough time staying interested in Emm's CD from start to finish, although I do give it good marks (she's better live). Sarah's EP 'Universe' is available from Sarah on cassette only, and should be required listening for any fan of Tori or Sarah McLachlan in my opinion. She hasn't been able to provide us with a mail-order address yet, but hopefully Steve will be able to track something down soon and post it here. Next, dee zed stroke zero one five wrote: >Speaking of which, does anyone have opinions about _Valentino_, Weeping >Tiles' latest? I really liked _Cold Snap_ and most of _epee_. I think I might have been the first to write about Weeping Tile over two years ago, after I became so infatuated with eePee. That CD still does it for me every time, but Cold Snap was a disappointment. It featured a new band lineup and a new direction, with Weeping Tile abandoning the emotion-drenched acoustic material I liked so much on eePee in favor of a style that I classify as the "Canadian Indie-rock" sound. Still, I thought Cold Snap had its moments and I had hoped the new CD might spell a return to the eePee feel. Unfortunately, I listened to the new 'Valentino' today, and was disappointed. It seems very 'discombobulated' to me, jumping from more of that emotionless Canadian indie-rock jangle to acoustic songs that are downright country in feel. Again, I think this one has its moments, but I will find it hard to listen to as a package from beginning to end. More like a source for a song or two destined for a mixed tape. That's it for now!
