Day 2: As woj mentioned, the Dar's set for the early show on Wednesday was exactly the same as it had been for the Tuesday night show, with the exception of "Mark Rothko Song" being yanked for time considerations (since they had to do a second show that night). As woj also mentioned, I did find this annoying. While we I was waiting outside for the doors to open I got to hear Dar and the band doing "The Ocean" inside, and that made me expect to hear it during the show. *sigh* In any case, I thought the band was more in synch than they were on Tuesday night and that the mix was better... though I still didn't think Richard's guitar was mixed up loud enough. And while Dar's set was the same, Richard's short 5 song opening set wasn't. He replaced "Kenworth of my Dreams" and "Arrowhead" with "Fishing" (yay!) and "Are You Happy Now?", while keeping "Reunion Hill", "Next Best Western" and "Money for Floods". I've said it before (as you can see in Richard's Ectoguide entry), and I'll say it again... the man is a genius! :) Day 3: Dar set was nearly the same again on Thursday, but she surprised everyone, including Richard, by replacing "February" in the encore with "You're Aging Well". Richard came on stage with Dar and Stephanie, and was tuning his guitar when Dar pointed out that he didn't need to be there. I was less annoyed by the repeated of nearly the entire set this time, probably because I expected it. It is a very strong set, though if it included "The Ocean" it would be better. Since I heard them playing it during the sound check on Wednesday I expect that at some point it will end up being added. Richard's opening set was great once again, consisting of "Fishing", "Reunion Hill", "Money for Floods", "Kenworth of my Dreams" and "Next Best Western". So my impressions of the three day "Darfest" were, overall, very positive. She sounds great with the band, the arrangements are well crafted, and even over the three short days they were at the Iron Horse they got better with every performance. I would have liked it if the sets had varied more, and I think it's a shame to keep Richard's great guitar playing so far back in the mix, but I still liked every show quite a bit. Looking ahead on Dar's tour schedule (and Richard's) I see that some of the dates don't include Mr. Shindell, and I can't imagine how they'll be without him. It was Richard's presence that made me decide to go to all three days, and I think he was a major component of both the way the band sounded (with both his bvox and the often faint sounds of his guitar) and the general atmosphere of the shows. Well it would have been better if it was a half an hour longer but anyway... She was very funny tonight. She spoke about being on Conan O'Brian again and then got into Letterman with Drew Barrymore showing her tits to David. So she was like Drew should do the same thing for her birthday which is coming up soon. And later on she told us that she went to a strip club and was waiting and waiting for a stripper to come by her table to amuse her and her friends. She said no one came so she decided to amuse them on her on and strip. And the guards were like you don't work here....Dan Bern opened for her. I expected to hate him because I've been hearing such negative stuff when I was on an Ani list about him. I wasn't even sure if I have seen him before. I've seen a guy open for her at the beacon theatre and he was horrible. Well Dan Bern opened with this funny song which started with "I got big balls..." It was hysterical and most of his songs were hysterical. At one point Ani, Andy, and Jason came on stage for his set. Ani played the drums and Andy and Jason sang backup for him. My only other complaint was that I was so squished. I had a good area where I could see very well on an angle but I wasn't in the middle. But everyone wanted to be where I was at! :( ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Sep 1997 23:41:55 -0400 From: meredith Subject: US Sarah Mclachlan news Hi! It is the Thursday, 10/23. Sigh. *Why* can't these things be on a weekend?!? I pretty much agree 100% with woj's comments about the 10,000 Maniacs show. I had a really good time and I'll definitely see them the next time they come around, but the spark in the songwriting just isn't there any more. They would do better to just flesh out John and Mary's two albums' worth of material and go with that. (Does anybody know what Natalie Merchant is up to? Outside of her cameo appearance providing vocals for one piece during Philip Glass' Sessions At West 54th performance, I haven't seen nor heard of her in months...) >kami lyle opened and she was marginally interesting. she has a gimmick: how >many other singer/songwriters do you know who play trumpet? her music had a >light, airy jazzy feel but wasn't very engrossing. she was also a bit too >precious for me. NRBQ (Joey Spampinato (or however the hell you spell that unfortunate name :)). And again, I have to agree and say that Dar ROCKED. Words cannot express just how amazingly wonderful her songs are with a full band. "As Cool As I Am" was a truly religious experience, once they all got into the right key. ;) And Aimee Mann's got nothing on Dar's Susan Dey impersonation -- I haven't laughed that hard in a *long* time. (Picture a woman who has no clue what to do with herself on stage if she isn't playing a guitar. She's got a tambourine in her hand. She's singing a kickass, yet truly silly song called "Teenagers, Kick Our Butts". And, as she herself stated, "We're running overtime and my hair is out of control!" :) I also have to agree with Mike that the electric guitar guy needs to get his shit together, and fast. "The End Of The Summer" would have been perfect with just Stephanie Winters' cello accompaniment, but he sounded as though he were playing a completely different song. (At the end of it Dar turned to him and gave him a really interesting Look, so I'm wondering just what was going on there.) That's really my only quibble, though. I highly recommend this show to any and all who can make it. >(hey, has >anyone else noticed that many of richard's songs are written from a woman's >perspective?). Yep -- he's a storyteller, that one. (Kate Bush has a lot of songs from a man's perspective. Same deal.) I do need to interject a couple notes: In between sets, the album that was playing over the PA system was Veda Hille's _Spine_!!! The Scrappy Bitch Tour will be charging into the Iron Horse in a couple weeks, which I guess explains it. I was loving it -- I've never heard Veda's music in a public place before. I even asked our waitress to compliment the sound guy on his choice of tunes. I think she thought I was insane. :} On the way home, it was late enough that Echoes was on WFUV. They played Project Lo's version of "Mercy Street", and now I'm more anxious than ever to pick the album up. Happy's vocal on the song is perfect. Finally, Ani DiFranco was on World Cafe today -- a full interview and performance, which was MUCH more satisfying than her appearance on Conan O'Brien last night (I could rant and rave about how inane and offensive his interview with Lucy Lawless was beforehand, but I'll refrain). She did "Gravel", which was great, but then had to subject herself to a little inane interview of her own. She handled it quite well, though. Apparently there is a "best of" compilation CD coming out featuring performances from the show, and "Shameless" is going to lead it off!
