What kind of music is it, has anything been released, what's Happy's part? (Okay, that's the obligatory Happy part :-) ) Last Monday, Marcel and I went to see Sam Brown in Paradiso, Amsterdam. It was the last concert in a short tour of the Netherlands, and far from sold-out (I think the Paradiso was only filled for 1/3), but the audience was pretty positive, making her come back twice for an encore. Sam was very tired ('f***ing naggered' as she told us), but it was still a good concert. Much too loud for my liking though, and I wouldn't have minded it if she would have played a couple of songs just by herself, without the band. But it was all with the Spasm band, and they rocked. They played mostly material from the latest album 'Box', plus some songs from the first album, including 'Stop', affectionately called 'Plop' by Sam and the band, and some covers or maybe a new song. Only one song from '43 Minutes', and nothing from 'April Moon'. After the concert we had a chance to talk with them, and they told us that they're leaving for Russia next week for a 10 day visit to Moscow and maybe some other places as well. There are no plans for a tour in the US or Australia/New Zealand, but they might go to Japan. Also they were not quite sure if the 'Box' album will be (has been?) released in the US. As the tourmanager (?) said, it might be a good one to try in the US. Anyway, they told us that Sam starts writing again from December, record early next year so next summer might see a new release which might be released in the US as well. Don't know how much of that is certain yet. Marcel has a short review with a picture on his homepage, at http://users.bart.nl/~mfgr/news.htm . I haven't really listened enough to 'Box' to know what I really think of it. It is indeed a return to the pre-'43 Minutes' sound. Hearing some of the songs live definitely made me appreciate them some more though. Finally, to clear up something else: Irvin wrote > and finally K's CHOICE are not from the US. they are from the > BENELUX area for sure, and i am pretty sure they are from BELGIUM. Or that > is to say, they are not from Holland or Luxenbourgh (are there any bands > that i would know of from Luxenbourgh?) so that leaves Belgium. They are indeed from Belgium, Antwerp to be more precise. Info about them can be found on several homepages, like an Official page at http://www.epiccenter.com/EpicCenter/kschoice/index.qry or an Unofficial page at http://oloon.student.utwente.nl/~kschoice/ Lots of graphics and frames though, on both those pages. And I don't think I know any bands from Luxembourg either. Best wishes, Marion - ---------------------- n.p. The Innocence Mission - same n.r. As far as Happy's Bon Lozaga dates. The cities she's selected are the ones that don't conflict with her current recording schedule. It's a wonder she has any time at all for these shows. She's only performing 3-4 songs as it is. Sorry Boston ! The rumour mill is correct in that she's in negotiations with a new label, but nothing's been signed. In this business that means absolutely NOTHING. Things are certainly progressing on the new album. Musicians, studios, and the lot are all booked and scheduled and the plan is to deliver a finished album to a Mastering Lab end of Nov. The album, so far is absolutely stunning and I'm constantly humming the new songs. She's producing this one solo and doing an incredible job. Her criteria, above all else, is to LOVE IT WHEN IT'S DONE !!!!!!!!!!!. As for who releases it and when...that's still up in the air, but there is definite interest from a few places. I'll keep y'all posted of course. Here's some fodder for the mill. Why is the making of this album being filmed ? Was that Happy Rhodes in downtown Omaha ? Kevin Bartlett and Richard Branson at Disneyworld ? Another new kitten ? Happy Rhodes singing at the Harvest Faire in VA 2 weeks ago ? Was that Kadim Hardison at the Bear cafe ? Sharon Nichols and Brad Pitt at the Tinker St. cafe ? Woodstock 1999 30 year Concert w/ Happy Rhodes ? Lillith Faire 1999 w/ Happy Rhodes ? I was just describing her to Geoff Parks in email as Tori with all the emotion and power but none of the over-the-top-ness (I love that too-muchness in Tori, but I think I'd find it irritating in someone else). The Tori similarities are there both in her voice & how she uses it and in the style of the songs, particularly the piano work. But to me she doesn't sound like a clone at all--like she's doing her own thing and it happens to veer in the same directions and come from some of the same places (a classically trained piano style with a love of classic rock music). She definitely has a wonderful future and her current music is impressive. Maybe it's the "in development" part of it that bothers her most? Her style seems pretty mature and individual for that. But she is "like Tori" more than almost anyone I can think of. She's even more like a local artist here called Mary Lydia Ryan, who is also "like Tori" but not as much as Sarah is, and I don't think she's quite as good as Sarah, but is also promising. She has all kinds of web info at Hey, what is it with Canada and all these great Sara(h)s? There's Sarah McLachlan, Sarah Slean, Sara Craig, Sarah Harmer of Weeping Tile, and probably more. Speaking of which, does anyone have opinions about _Valentino_, Weeping Tiles' latest? I really liked _Cold Snap_ and most of _epee_. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 11:24:08 -0700 From: neile@sff.net (Neile Graham) Subject: Mary Lydia Ryan At 10:18 AM 9/18/97, Neile Graham wrote: >She's even more like a local artist here called Mary Lydia Ryan, who is >also "like Tori" but not as much as Sarah is, and I don't think she's quite >as good as Sarah, but is also promising. Her web pages are at http://www.eventure.com/mlr/index.html She'll give a free copy of her cd to anyone who is the first to request it from their geographical area. No one from Ontario's got it and only one person from the U.K. so she might still send there. Lots of other places that aren't represented. At one time she was asking people who got free cds to post reviews to the web. I should have volunteered for the Ectophiles' Guide. Someone still could volunteer to do that. I paid for a copy of the disc, and while it's not an all-time favourite of mine, I've given it plenty of listens and will in the future, too. (my mind remembers the 24th, but i think the show is actually on a thursday, which would be the 23rd...ack! i'm sure we'll figure it out soon enough.) in the immortal words of, uh, somebody: "we're there, dude." onto other topics... as meredith had guessed, we were "there, dude" for only the two definite shows from the list i posted earlier this week: 10,000 maniacs/kami lyle at toad's place in new haven and dar williams/richard shindell at the iron horse in northampton. 10,000 manics were good, but in a less than satisfying way. they're more of a band than they ever were in the natalie merchant years and their musical performance was very strong -- overwhelmingly great at times. unfortunately, the things i don't like about _love among the ruins_ were in evidence on stage as well: the lack of any musically creative drives from john lombardo (whose contributions to the performance consisted almost entirely of completely inaudible acoustic rhythm guitar) and the lack of anything as lyrically strong as natalie's songs. i find the record pretty boring and, as meredith put it, their live show didn't increase my appreciation for it. (well, isn't it ironic that i, of all people, whould whine about lyrics...but the fact is that natalie merchant is an significant lyricist, that mary ramsey -- or the rest of the band -- couldn't write their way out of a paper bag, and that, much as i hate to admit that i was wrong, natalie was much more crucial to the band's previous success, irrespective of her charismatic frontwoman role.) however, the handful of previous hits they played ("candy everybody wants", "these are days", "hey jack kerouac", "because the night", "what's the matter here?") were very well done and "stockton gala days" (was that a single?) was one of the aforementioned overwhelmingly great moments. they also played a couple john and mary tunes, which were really good. most amusing moment: the first song of the encore was the "re-mix" version of "more than this" -- anyone who thought that tee's radio edit on the single was a remix is wrong! they just play it in an entirely different way (which i prefer since it's more interesting and less faithful to the original). kami lyle opened and she was marginally interesting. she has a gimmick: how many other singer/songwriters do you know who play trumpet? her music had a light, airy jazzy feel but wasn't very engrossing. she was also a bit too precious for me. decent band though: one guitarist and the bassist from the radiators, who made a good transition to a different style of music. mca records released kami's debut. check out if my description hasn't scared you off. ;) mike curry talked about the first richard shindell/dar williams show tuesday night. since mike's back at the iron horse to catch the third (well, fourth since they added a second show last night) show in this series of warm-ups for the official tour, i guess i'll babble about wednesday's early show. hmmm. actually, after re-reading mike's review, all i really need to say is "what he said!". dar's set was identical to the first night's (this annoyed mike, but didn't bother us any). the full band thing isn't as drastic a change as one might think (it's not like she hired kiss to back her or something), but fills out her songs very nicely. "as cool as i am" was definitely a high point since it was quite a bit different than on the record -- as mike said, this may be the way it's always been intended to sound (the addition of a didjeridu would have made it perfect -- you'd think there'dbe at least one didj player *somewhere* in northampton!). richard shindell's guitar was too low. (wah!) stephanie winters was the perfect addition -- "february" was glorious. just so i'm not repeating everything mike said, i thought the electric guitar/drums were the right volume. :P ;) it would have been cool if they played "nora", but i'll settle for "mary magdalene", which was perfect as sung by dar (hey, has anyone else noticed that many of richard's songs are written from a woman's perspective?). speaking of richard, his set, while short, was excellent. as usual. can he do no wrong? obviously not for richard is god. 'nuff said. finally, since it's been months since i talked about any records we've bought, here are some drive-by reviews of ectophilic things that have crossed the laser beanm lately: madder rose -- tragicmagic: indierawk with soul and a sense of groove. love it. two thumbs up. lauren hoffman -- megiddo: slightly menacing, fuzzy poprock which isn't that bad. not too dissimilar to mila drumke (for those of you who have heard her), though lacking in mila's subtlety. chantal kreviazuk -- under these rocks and stones: eh. whatever. amy x newburg & men -- utchema: omigodomigodomigod, why did i take so long to pick this album up?!? bent pop. is it any surprise she's from the west coast? two thumbs! eddi reader -- candyfloss and medicine: generally good, but the album seems to slowly lose steam after the first track. if you like eddi (as i do), you'll like this, perhaps even a lot, but i'm not 100% sure of it yet. abra moore -- strangest places: didn't like this at all on the first listen, but i rather like it now. guitar pop which edges on edginess. tiny lights -- the smaller the grape the sweeter the wine: haven't listened to it yet, but i wanted to mention it since i know there are some closet tiny lights fans here. sophie zelmani -- s/t: kinda twangy, kinda folky. music is solid, but borderline. sophie has a nice husky voice though. i think that's enough for now. oh wait! does the name priscilla ederle ring anyone's bells? i picked up an album by her called _last will & testament_. the name is really familiar, but i can't place where i've heard it before. nice record too. woj ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 22:21:48 -0400 From: "Michael J.
