Old habits die hard. - ------------------- Good to see that ecto has finally returned. Unfortunately, coincident with the return of ecto was the return of ecto backlog. *sigh* Anyway, not that much new to report since ecto went down. One thing I didn't do a month ago was report on Lilith: Saw Lilith Fair in Toronto, and with it Dan Stark and Bob Kollemeyer. First up was one of my fave local performers, Emm Gryner. Unfortunately her show was marred by the fact that it occurred in the middle of a torrential downpour, and they had garbage bags covering the speakers, which flapped loudly with every low note played. Dayna Manning was a welcome surprise, shifted from second stage to the main stage due to inclement weather, she absolutely charmed the socks off the 16000 people present. Terrific performance. The Wild Strawberries were a bit of a disappointment for me, their show was not nearly as fun and energetic as the ones I'm used to, but then those shows didn't feature a visibly pregnant Roberta Carter Harrison. Shawn Colvin was a total yawn. For me the Indigo Girls were the highlight of the show; they were absolutely spellbinding, and a tremendous amount of fun to boot. Far better than the last time I saw them. Especially incredible was when they brought out Jewel and Sarah for one song (what beautiful harmonies!), and then anyone else who was around for "Closer to Fine". Would you believe Jewel yodelled a verse? Unforgettable. Sarah was in fine form, but I decided that Sarah in a 16000 seat venue is just not the same as Sarah in a 600 seat venue. I haven't even bought tickets for Sarah's upcoming shows in Toronto. Otherwise as far as live music goes I've been subsisting on a steady diet of local artists Emm Gryner and Sarah Slean. They're both absolutely terrific, and hopefully they will both achieve major success in the near future. Emm already has caught the attention of the organizers of Lilith Fair and the folks at MuchMusic and is currently wrapping up an international record deal with Mercury/Polygram. Sarah Slean on the other hand is just starting out. She just put out her first cassette EP, but folks, it is fantastic. A must-check-out, especially for fans of Tori. Her songs "Universe" and "Me and Jerome" are just incredible. I've finally gotten around to putting up a website for the two of them, and I urge everyone here to check it out and download the soundbites (and give me feedback on the site!) http://psych.utoronto.ca/~stephen/tomusic/tomusic.htm The site's co-maintainer, Gian Covello, a lurker on this list but a loudmouth... er... frequent poster... on the Jewel and Tara MacLean lists, has been promoting the site on those lists, which has led to a considerable amount of interest and many requests for tapes/CDs. Gian's set up an informal distribution system consisting of himself. I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing the same for people on this list. He's not gaining financially from these transactions but I do believe that he is trying to score major brownie points with Sarah Slean... ;-) Steve <-- eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Scrappy Bitch Tour on the weekend! - ------------ P.S. Since my botched attempt to send this the last time, it's been interesting to see that other 'philes are also passing on this round of Sarah shows. To JCB (not Jeff Burka, but the JCB who disagreed with his assessment of _Surfacing_... it's the war of the JCB's!), we certainly don't all dislike Sarah's disc. But certainly a lot of us fall under the category of being a bit disappointed by it, but only because one of her other CDs is near-perfection to us and almost anything else will fall short, even another sarah disc! So you may hear us being negative, but not necessarily because we *dislike* the CD. In Denver, she's playing the Temple Buell Theater. It's a GIGANTIC theater that usually hosts Broadway road shows. It probably seats as many people as all the Broadway theaters combined do -- it's huge. It was designed that way since the road shows usually only stay for a very brief time, and this way, more people can see them. However, having (accidentally) sat in one of the lower balconies for Phantom (it was Phantom's first road show and the first show at the Buell), I can attest that if you're up there, you might as well be in a basketball arena. (I like the Buell, but only if I'm right up front. And those seats are over $50 with service charges.) I really miss the days when Sarah played smaller venues, such as Boulder's 800-or-so seat Fox Theater -- the same place Dar Williams is playing next month. (She sings when doves cries and does a version of Shameless that sounds like she is Prince. And he envies how she makes so much money comparied to himself.) Also in today's newsday (Long Island, NY) there is a 2 page article about Ani's concert at Jones Beach and an interview they did with her in the Village. (Probably last Wednesday.) They discussed her performance at Sessions at West 54th which I saw. The picture in the newspaper might be the most recent picture of her. From all this Aimee Mann talk I just bought a used cassette of "I'm with Stupid". For $2.69. I just wish I found other music I was looking for used. It's funny when I can look for months for something in used and not find it. Then I break down and buy something at full price. Then the next time I look in the used bins there is a copy of it for a good price! :( I also answered my own question about the Anorexic gymnist movie song. Would you care to fill in some details here, like is Chris > really dead, and if so, how did he die and when? (Skimming again... I > know... I'm sorry.) He hung himself in his parents' home almost a year ago. I believe it was last October. I'm curious as to the fate of the band too. I would assume they are going to continue on, but haven't heard anything. Alas, it has been transported to another location in the cyberuniverse--far, far away from the galactic armpit of America Online. You may now say "where the hell is my damn fanzine?" at terra@ulster.net Unfortunately, no one will ever receive another issue of Rhodeways. That's because it's not Rhodeways anymore. Yeah, verily, we are now Terra Incognita. Why? Got bored. Stuff's happ'nin ......... Sharon ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V3 #11 *************************
