On Friday (8/22) I went to (gasp!) a Susan McKeown show at Fez! Yes, I know you're all shocked. There were two shows, and woj, Meredith and I went to the late one. While we were waiting in line to get in we encountered Paul (hi Paul) on his way out of the early show, and it seemed he was glad to see us because it meant he wouldn't have to feel obligated to write something about the show himself. ;) We also encountered one of the Andys from love-hounds, who apparently had enjoyed his first Susan McKeown show quite a bit. Another convert! And of course it goes without saying that Sam and Hillary were there. The show itself was spectacular! Maybe it was because I hadn't seen Susan perform at Fez since May, or maybe it was because I hadn't seen her perform anywhere since she opened a show at the Iron Horse on 4th of July weekend, but I'd almost swear that she and the Chanters had actually gotten better. Scary. Maybe Susan's grueling recording schedule this summer has just managed to hone her already amazing skills even more. Yes, I did say recording schedule. Susan is going to have lots of new and kinda new stuff coming out in the not too distant future. She will be appearing on three separate compilation albums, there is a cd version of _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_ coming out (on Oct 7th I think) which includes some new material, she is on the cast album for Peter & Wendy, and (what I'm looking forward to the most) she has her own trad album coming out! I think that's it... if I've forgotten anything I'm sure Hillary will pipe up. :) Anyway, as I said, the show was great. Here's the set list... Ce Leis E Love and Superstition Fortune Fuck You (aka What Did I Ever Do To You) Ballinaboula Seven Cold Glories Bones Bonny Boy (Susan solo) Salome Wheels Words Snakes Encore: I Know, I Know God Woman (I think that's the title... a song by Christy Moore) All the players were in fine form (not that I've ever seen them any other way) and I'm of course looking forward to the next show. :) Mike np: Richard Shindell -- Reunion Hill | Michael Curry / mcurry@io.com / mcurry@compuserve.com | | http://www.io.com/~mcurry | | Am I bitter? Hi! ecto's back!!! (200+ mailboxes cower in fright) ;) Thanks to Jeff and woj for resurrecting this place. It's been a long 3 weeks... First, does anybody know what the deal is for tickets to see Sarah McLachlan at the Theater At Madison Square Garden in October? According to the note I got from Nettwerk the tickets supposedly went on sale today, but I wasn't able to find out any concrete details. I hope I'm not screwed out of tickets now. Sigh... I've been storing up quite a bit to report on, but I'll just do capsule news briefs to spare us all. - -- Mike did a nice job with the Chanting House review, so I don't have to worry about that. :) I must agree that it was the best Chanting House show I've ever seen -- they were just really on, and the song selection was wonderful. (I guess all that subtle bitching I'd been doing about the perennial absence of "Salome" from the set list did come to some good after all. ;) I can't wait for all the projects Susan's been working on this summer to see the light of day. Mike didn't mention Annie Gallup, who opened the shows that evening. I mentioned her last year when I first saw her at the Prime CD gig at The Bottom Line -- I still think she's great. I figured out that she's Meryn Cadell's elfin twin (woj asked her afterwards if she was familiar with Meryn Cadell's work and she said, "Who?" :). The impish grin she has on her face when she sings her songs just make the whole show. - -- The next day woj and I went to the Philadelphia Folk Festival, where we ran into Bob Brown (surprise!) and enjoyed a great, if long and ultimately *really* chilly day and night of good music. The afternoon was cool -- Kate Campbell started things off (I've been hearing her stuff on WFUV -- she's a singer/songwriter type from Mississippi, pretty cool but I'll probably never go out of my way to see her perform or buy her album), then Bill Miller did a great set with full band, and a little bit more flute playing than he was doing when he opened for Tori. Emmylou Harris came on after that, and she was great. I've been trying to remember why her drummer's name sounds so familiar -- does the name Brady Blade ring any bells for anyone? I *know* I've seen him perform somewhere, or heard of him before. It's been bugging me ever since. In the evening Solas rocked, then Cape Breton fiddling sensation Natalie McMaster kicked butt like butt has never been kicked before. Imagine 25,000 people jigging and cheering. Yow. She made Ashley MacIsaac look like the fourth violin in a grade school orchestra. She even had a microphone pointed down at a spot on the stage, so she could provide percussion by step-dancing there. She was definitely the highlight of the night. Besides the kickass Celtic dance stuff, Scottish singer/songwriter Dick Gaughan was there, and he was pretty cool. I also enjoyed Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women. Laura Love ended the evening, and besides having the bad luck to follow right after Natalie McMaster, she did a great (though way too short) set and, judging by the talk I heard on the bus back to the parking lot, made quite a few new fans. - -- A week ago Thursday Tamar, woj, Mike and I saw The Nields at Toad's Place in New Haven. What can I say, it was The Nields. :) The sound sucked - -- the bass totally overwhelmed the vocals (what can I say, it was Toad's), but it was a great show nonetheless. I'm kind of worried by the fact that both Katryna's and Nerissa's voices sounded shot and they're just now embarking on the Big Official Gotta Get Over Greta Promotional Tour, but hopefully it's just paranoia and nothing will come of it. - -- This past Wednesday woj, Jeff and I saw Jane Siberry at The Turning Point, a teeny 50- seat cafe in quaint Piermont, NY (right in the shadow of the Tappan Zee Bridge, the engineering wonder of my commuting life). In what turned out to be a tuneup for her Sessions At West 54th taping last night (more on that later), she and Tim Ray, David Travers-Smith and Rebecca Campbell delivered just over an hour of pure Jane music, mostly unreleased material and some interesting selections including "You Don't Need", "At The Beginning Of Time", and a transcendent highlights version of "Oh My My". During the encore she completely butchered "Ain't It Funny" (the song she wrote for k.d. lang which is on the _Drag_ album), which was hilarious. While we were there woj and I noticed that Richard Shindell was on the bill for the very next night, so - -- Thursday night saw us back at The Turning Point to watch the god himself in action. :) Richard's new album _Reunion Hill_ has just come out on Shanachie, and it's every bit as good as his previous two releases, though I'm not quite acquainted with it yet. He was happy to be back home and playing his own gig (he joked that if he suddenly broke into a Dar Williams song we'd have to forgive him), and he did a wonderful set that lasted almost an hour and a half without a break. Everyone who has tickets for Dar's shows where he's opening is in for a treat -- get there on time, so you don't miss a minute of his set!!! He dropped tantalizing little hints about Dar's upcoming shows, too. I can't WAIT for the Iron Horse gig on the 16th! Afterwards I stopped to say hello to him and thank him for being so wonderful, and was relieved to discover that he really is as nice as he looks. :) The scary part was that he said he knew he'd seen me before! The only other time I've seen him perform where he could possibly have laid eyes on me was when he opened for Susan McKeown over a year and a half ago. - -- Last night woj, Jeff and I survived a few harrowing hours of traffic hell to just wait in line for an hour in front of the Sony Music studios to be in the audience for Jane's taping of Sessions At West 54th. It was great. She basically did the same set as at The Turning Point (I liked "Oh My My" better in Piermont). It'll be interesting to see what kind of a hack job they do on it for the broadcast, which is scheduled to air "sometime in December". (Celebrity sighting: Joy Askew, whom I almost ran into while trying to find the bathroom. Whee.) New acquisitions of note: - -- Veda Hille, _Women In (E)Motion_ (live Veda! Yay! It rules :) - -- Mila Drumke, _Illinois_ (every bit as wonderful as Vickie says -- I love it) - -- Richard Shindell, _Reunion Hill_ (see notes above) - -- Patty Larkin, _Perishable Fruit_ (not as engaging as her last one, but it's growing on me) There's probably more, but I can't remember right now. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | Boonton, NJ USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 1997 15:51:24 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************* Mary Lou Rowe (marylou@bnr.ca) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -
