The last time I liked an album this much on the strength of first listen (which was enough to make me listen to it on repeat many times more :) was Susan Werner's "Last of the Good Straight Girls". "Mrs Pinocchi's Guitar" came in first (with 29 votes, if I recall correctly) in a recent poll on the folk_music mailing list. I bought the album on the strength of this recommendation and love every second of it! It's got funny songs ("... is it peace, or is it Prozac? I don't care, no need to know that...") and lots of sad weepy songs, including a couple of environmental awareness ones and lots of the usual love variety. :) Also, there's a guy with an absolutely *gorgeous* voice singing on a few songs - Jonathan Edwards, does anyone know anything about him? Oh, and Jonatha Brooke pops up lovely in a few places too. Great album. I'm rambling... Then he met Linda Evans, and the sappiness element in his style went through the roof, which is too bad, really, because he's good at messing with polyrhythms (like "Nostalgia" or "Keys to Imagination"). Whether or not his musical decline is due to the insidious influence of Ms. Evans or his record company is a good question; there's no doubt that Private Music now promotes his handsome mug in the records' packaging (_Keys to Imagination_ had one little picture of him in the liner notes; 1994's _Dare to Dream_ not only prominently displayed him on the cover, but had another two or three head shots scattered through the Digipak). Financially, it was a smart thing to do-- middle-aged women eat that stuff up. Actually, this reminds me of something I once noticed; ever notice that almost all country music albums have the artist(s) prominently featured on the cover, yet almost no "alternative" albums do? (except for albums by female singer/songwriters like Tori Amos, Heather Nova, Kate Bush, etc.; though male singer/songwriters often don't get displayed on the cover as often) Theories, anyone? I picked up the new Tori Amos and the new Aimee Mann (never thought this would get out!). I've had Boys for Pele almost exclusively in my cd player. I was quite excited by it and quite affected by a number of the songs. Hopefully, through repeated listenings I will be able to absorb the meanings behind some of the songs...I still don't know what SpaceDog is about from Under the Pink..;-) The songs I really have a sense for are the slow ones. For some reason I know *exactly* what those are about. I get the sense for Caught A Lite a Sneeze, Hey Jupiter, Not the Red Baron, Doughnut Song, Putting the Damage On and Twinkle. The opening of the cd takes my breath away...Beauty Queen going into Horses. I get the real sense of a narrative from the overall album and the beginning takesme from a sunny meadow into a storm and off into the dark wild woods for a scary walk. I will see her in concert this year hell or high water! The new Aimee Mann is definitely crunchy and I like it. I just got this yesterday so I'm still absorbing it but I like what I hear so far. With regard to country albums, my theory is that you are buying into the person more than you are the experience or the image. It seems to me that rock tends to be more oriented toward a sound/image/experience. Country music seems oriented toward performance/ego/storytelling. Furthermore, rock is dominated by groups, country by individual artists. And those individual country artists are almost all singers. Country artists also tend to borrow each others songs more their rock counterparts. And many country artists do not write their own material. So I guess what I'm saying is it makes sense to stick your face on the album nice and big if what's inside hinges on what your voice sounds like and how you perform the material. zzzzzzz Hope that made sense :) I'm a tad tired... }o - - Mike Michael Doyle maeldun@i-2000.com =================================================================== "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes" - - Alexander the Great ------------------------------ From: Mike Matthews Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 00:15:07 -0500 Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************** Bob Lovejoy (rlovejoy@netaxs.com) ******************** ******************* Diane Burke (dburke@wellesley.edu) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Bob Lovejoy Sun February 02 1947 Aquarius Diane Burke Sat February 02 1963 slow children Timothy S.
