I'm not sure if Ruby is a group or a person, but they performed with drums, bass, guitar/keyboard, "Ruby" on voice and a lot of prerecorded sounds. The negative things are the prerecorded sound, there's not much difference between the live sound and the album, and that there is only one album to take songs from. They handled both these drawbacks well, although I would have liked more differences to the album sound. She got a bit more space for her vocals and uses it :-) and there is more intensity in the songs. She's small and compact and is often standing in some sort of punk pose with a hard face and singing with a soft voice. Interesting clash :-) To summarize: The album "Salt Peter" is very good and the live act good. I would describe Ruby as "Trip-Rock". (If Portishead, Tricky and Massive Attack is Trip-Hop) Another interesting band, Dubstar, (Trip-Pop) plays tonight, but I probably give that a miss. /Hakan ------------------------------ From: ptv@rtp.scm-metals.com (Patrick Varker) Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 07:47:39 -0500 Subject: Boys For Pele First impressions of Boy's For Pele are very favorable, don't know what the Rolling Stone reviewer was listenind to. For all you Bel Canto fans, the new single is out. Found it by accident today when picking up Boys for Pele. The single is called "Rumour" and the CD has the album mix and 4 other remixes. IT's definitely the most mainstream sounding thing Bel Canto has ever done, and I'm not too sure that's a good thing (except maybe for sales, and who cares about those??) If it weren't for Anneli's incredibly distinct voice, I never would have guessed that it was Bel Canto. It's a nice little song, but if the rest of the album doesn't vary much from the sound of Rumour it will be a huge disappointment for me, after the gloriousness of "Shimmering Warm and Bright." Now it's time to give Tori a listen. Still trying to get over the trauma of seeing that "Tori suckling a pig" photo. Very disturbing. But the fabulous cover shot with her and that rifle and mud definitely makes up for it. - --andy ------------------------------ From: Sue Trowbridge Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 15:55:21 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: ecto-digest V2 #355 On Mon, 22 Jan 1996 ariana@nycmetro.com wrote: > Talking about working out...I haven't been to the gym in the month, but > anyway. As someone who works out on a regular basis, I've actually contemplated trying to compile an "ectocise" tape. There are lots of obvious choices for slow/midtempo tunes to stretch or lift weights to, but coming up with uptempo or dancey stuff is much harder. Most ecto music doesn't have a lot of beats-per-minute. Hmm, maybe Kate Bush's "Shoedance" remix. My club plays a top 40 station in the weight room, and if I hear Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" one more time (a song I used to like until I heard it 3,000 times), I'm gonna have to throw a 20-lb dumbbell through the speakers. - --Sue Trowbridge ------------------------------ From: "jeffrey hanson" Date: Tue, 23 Jan 96 14:42:26 cdt Subject: Richard & Linda Thompson-Shoot out the Lights ? My favorite workout tapes don't contain a lot of ecto music on it -- generally, I need music with a strong beat when I workout. However, a few songs are workout classics: Running Up That Hill -- Kate Bush first song on my tape, because the lead-in notes are perfect for getting me going God -- Tori Amos. A fun song. Professional Widow -- Tori Amos. I haven't actually tried this yet, but I can't wait to create a new tape around this. My first listen to the new album tells me that this is going to be a strange but crazy (in a good way) song to listen to while riding the bike. 80-year-old Millionaire -- Kirsty MacColl Fun, bouncy song. However, I don't think it's available on Galore, so you may have trouble finding the song. ?? -- Squonk Opera I can't recall the name of the particular tune, but lots of their music is good for dancing around with. Live version of Into the Fire -- Sarah McLachlan Sarah rocks out on this song. Wrong Century -- Happy Rhodes This is a bit of a stretch, but since it's such a fun song, it gets me bopping along. Try it toward the end of your workout, when you are ready to start cooling down. Never Said -- Liz Phair Almost any early 10,000 Maniacs In their later years, the maniacs calmed down. But many of the early songs rocked nicely. We Got the Beat -- GoGos Falling on Fists -- Melissa Ferrick Artists who have many songs good for working out: Danielle Dax, PJ Harvey, Bjork (& the Sugarcubes), Throwing Muses, His Name Is Alive, Janet Jackson, Madonna. Okay, so the last two aren't ecto music. Still, they're female artists who produce _tons_ of good workout music. I think they collaborated before _Heaven and Hell_; Anderson plays harp on one song on _Opera Sauvage_, but I'm not sure if that came out before or after _Heaven and Hell_. He also sings on the title track on _See You Later_, a very bitter album that Vangelis must've put together in a fit of frustration. (One of the other songs from that album, "Memories of Green", later showed up on the Blade Runner soundtrack.) More J&V trivia: when Rick Wakeman left Yes in the early 70's, Jon Anderson wanted Vangelis to replace him. V decided against it, because he had been in a band for a number of years (Aphrodite's Child) and wanted to remain solo. > > Friends of Mr Cairo also contains State of Independence which was > covered by someone very famous, though I can't remember who at the > moment. Can anyone remind me? Moodswings covered it, with Chryssie Hynde on lead vocal. My jaw hit the floor when I first heard it on the radio (late '91 or so). The techno group B-Tribe also did a J&V cover a couple years ago-- their tune "You Won't See Me Cry" is a direct rip-off of "I'll Find My Way Home", also from _Friends of Mr. Cairo_. At least they acknowledge it in the liner notes. D^2 ------------------------------ From: ! Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 20:15:00 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Richard & Linda Thompson-Shoot out the Lights ? (If you don't want to hear anything about Tori's new one _Boys For Pele_, delete this one now. :) So I was basically a wreck all day today. I could've gone out at lunch and picked up the album, but then I would have been going even crazier all after- noon than I already was (sometimes I REALLY hate not being able to listen to music at work). The afternoon was made even weirder by an incident just after lunch wherein one of my coworkers passed out at her desk and was rushed to the hospital with what turned out to be the same ribcage-cartilage-inflam- mation thing Tori was stricken with in the middle of her last tour. But anyway. 5:30 on the dot and I was out the door. Very glad I actually found a spot next to the building this morning. Broke several laws getting downtown. Arrived at Circuit City (I got a gift certificate for Christmas and figured this would be a good time to use it). Looked everywhere -- no new Tori! "Oh yeah, that was supposed to come in today, but it didn't." Argh! Ran next door to Strawberries, where they had a whole display of it on the New Releases wall (and on sale, no less!). Had the disc unwrapped, out of the jewel case, and in my hand before I was even out the door. Jumped in the car, locked the door, slid the disc into the player. 70 minutes later, I realized I was 60 miles closer to home and did NOT want the music to stop. Gave myself a few minutes to recover before starting it over again. Wow. Words do not exist to describe just how incredibly, amazingly, unbelievably fucking BRILLIANT this album is. Nothing has slammed me up against the wall, throttled me, then melted me into a quivering pool of jelly on the first listen like this since _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_. There are some spots where I wish she would have sung in a different style, and the saxophone at the end of "Muhammad My Friend" seems a bit out of place, but I know I'll grow out of those quibbles very quickly. "Caught A Lite Sneeze" seemed out of context until I listened the second time, but now it makes perfect sense. It would be useless to list the tracks that stand out after the first listen, because I'd just be naming every song on the album. "Professional Widow" in particular really hit me -- she's channeling Zeppelin straight through her harpsichord, and it totally cracks me up but it *works*. Her voice in "Blood Roses" is literally stunning in its power. You can definitely tell she recorded some songs in New Orleans... maybe her next album should be piano- bar blues. :) "In The Springtime Of His Voodoo" hit me quite hard as well. And while I know I'm going to hate myself someday for saying this, there are some unmistakably Kate-like moments on this disc, particularly where backing vocals and the use of certain background sounds is concerned. There will be those who will compare this to _The Dreaming_, and I'll know exactly where they're coming from. Of course, Tori channels herself in a few spots too -- there are some familiar musical and lyrical themes, and the chorus of "Muhammad My Friend" sounds just like "Sweet Dreams". As for the packaging, I love every picture except the one of her standing in front of the burning piano. I'm sure they didn't use a real piano, but knowing how Tori feels about pianos, how could she do that??? I understand the symbolism involved and everything, but still... it seems like almost a betrayal. As for the suckling-pig picture, well, in my opinion the pig is rather an unnecessary obstruction. ;> I've noticed quite a few differences between the printed and the sung lyrics (not to mention a few typos :). If anyone knows why there aren't any lyrics printed for "Way Down", please post. :) Finally, I don't believe for a minute the bullpuckey Tori was spouting on eMpTV about how this isn't a "breakup album". Take one look at the lyrics (especially those of "Hey Jupiter") and you'll see what I mean. This is her "Fuck you, Eric" album, and while it may not be the most charitable thing to say, maybe she should get screwed over more often. :} Now if you'll excuse me, I have something to listen to... P.S. So what's with the video for "Caught a Lite Sneeze", anyway? Whose idea was the whole Rene Magritte-meets-M.C. Escher-on-the-cover-of-a-Pink- Floyd-album thing??? I love it. :> +===========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA http://remus.rutgers.edu/~woj/meth/| +===========================================================================+ | "well you'll never gain weight from a donut hole" - Tori Amos | +===========================================================================+ ------------------------------ From: VNozick@tribune.com Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 20:46:47 -0600 Subject: Pig suckling I know I should probably bring this discussion to RDT, but I like the quality of conversation here on ecto, so I know the debate will be more productive (read: flame free). In short, I'm extremely disappointed in the photo of a pig suckling Tori's breast in the CD booklet of BfP. It's not so much that I'm offended (which I am), but it seems like a cheap trip on Tori's part to get some publicity. I don't see much difference between this photo and much of what Madonna did in Sex. Is Tori trying to make a statement about sexuality? Is she trying to minimize the breast as sexual object? I could accept that argument, except that it could be done much better without using a _pig_. (for example, using a baby, which is a much less blatantly sexual image). The rest of the photography in the booklet is beautiful -- especially the small photo of the piano burning on the cover and the center photo of her against the fire. This one photo disturbs me, though. Any thoughts on the photo?
