I use to listen to a group called Shellyan Orphan. I have 2 of their albums. Some people have compared the lead singer's voice to the lead singer of the Sunday's voice. They once toured with the Cure several years ago now. Then there is Opus III. I think they are techno. I really like the lead singer's voice. The songwriter is ok. Recently on the Ecto irc channel someone mentioned Bel Canto. I mentioned a song that I thought was Bel Canto. Now I can't even find the song I have with Bel Canto on it. But what I confused Bel CAnto with was someone or some group called "Beautiful Pea Green Boat". I had the song called "the vase". I really liked the song but never saw anything of their's arround. ------------------------------ From: 32 flavors and then some Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 22:19:44 -0500 Subject: ectopics ectofolk, does anyone recall the date that holly cole was on the world cafe? it was not too long ago, but i seem to have failed to note the date (yes, irvin, i *am* working on updating my list, but it won't be done til at least tuesday). (musical interjection: madder rose's "the love you save" single is excellent! (i told you all that before, but it bears repeating.)) also not too long ago, i received a copy of sonya waters' latest demo cassette. she used to be the frontwoman for orange, who had a track on doctor death's volume v compilation _hearts lust in limbo_ and an album out on dewdrops records. orange disintegrated, but sonya is still churning out tunes. these five songs are just her and an acoustic guitar, but they still capture the same etheriel nature that orange did with their electric instruments. folks who like love spirals downwards or similar bands take note (that means you, michael doyle and deniz). sonya's address is 1296 haight #28 sf, ca 94117 not sure how much to send (my copy was a gift), but $5 is probably about right. speaking of the world cafe (well, i had been), here is the (current) list of guests for this week's program, hot off their web page: WORLD CAFE ONLINE: GUESTS. "last goodbye", in particular, and the title track are standouts. don't forget that tori is on 120 minutes tonight. woj ------------------------------ From: "Xenu's Sister" Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 20:27:42 -0600 (CST) Subject: New HTML-ized Happy/Ecto FAQ Hey there! In this case, I think everyone is right :) There is a Debbie Harry/Iggy Pop duet on Red, Hot + Blue called "Well did you evah". Is that the one you were thinking of? My local Borders had two large obvious piles of The Keep out. I was quite pleasently surprised. Course, I would have been more pleasently surprised if the band I went there to see had been playing today, rather than next Sunday. I came by my confusion honestly though, as the local weekly listed them as being there. Of course, I made up the time of 3:00 all by myself. WHen I found them absent (can you do that?), I noticed on the schedule they would be playing at 7:30. Naturally, I failed to notice that that date was next week. SO I basically spent much of my day going back and forth to Borders. Oh well. And I won't go next week, because I wouldn't dream of missing the special showing of the first Brothers Quay live action film, with an actual appearance by the Brothers themselves! Thanks for rubbing it in, Gleb! :-) In our defense though, we Canadians do as a group appreciate our homegrown music in general. Even friends who aren't that much into music constantly ask of artists "is s/he Canadian?", and tend to like them more if the answer is "yes." We're all very proud of Sarah and Loreena, Neil, Joni and the others who have achieved some degree of success outside of Canada. We're also proud of our bands which can't really seem to break into the U.S. market (where commercial success really counts), like the Tragically Hip, and Spirit of the West, which are hugely popular here. I think that the indie scene is a thriving one too, especially in Toronto and Vancouver but also in places you would never expect, like Kingston (Tragically Hip, Inbreds, Arrogant Worms, Weeping Tile), and Cape Breton (Sloan, jale, Ashley MacIsaac, Rankin Family, Theresa Doyle). *Somebody* had to be watching them before they could become even faintly known outside of Canada. So obviously not all of us know about all Canadian bands, but some of us are reasonably acquainted with the local music scene. In my own defense, woj introduced me to Anhai, a Torontonian, long before I became a Torontonian myself. Whoa, that was pretty defensive, huh? I didn't *think* I was that defensive, but all that rolled out of me pretty easily. Actually, I don't really think I was being that defensive, I just sometimes get carried away with my posts! :-) Steve - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Ito, | "Life is pain, Highness.
