So, whoever you were, please feel free to use anything I wrote. Secondly , thanks to all who wrote in comments about Ruby and Poe. I had never heard anything by either of them, and rarely buy without hearing at least one song from an album, but the depression caused by the start of a new semester of stress set it and I bought both. Wow!!! 2 incredible albums. Poe definitely reminds me of some sort of Liz Phair / Suzanne Vega hybrid (but with a much better voice than Liz, IMO). And for Ruby? Hmmm, once in a while makes me think of Portishead, much of the time with some NIN thrown in, but I find it much harder to describe her music. But I've become quite attached to it. I finally found the import picture disc for Caught A Lite Sneeze; I find the bonus tracks "London Girls" and "Samuri" much more impressive than anything on the domestic CD5. She has released about 3 or 4 solo cds, numerous singles etc... She also was a singer on the cd by a group called Absent Friends. Since this is my first post, please pardon any protocol errors. First, "Robert I. Stewart" asked on Wed, 17 Jan 1996: Who sang this song... "Last night I heard a song I hadn't heard in ages. It's a song called "Candy", a duet. One half of the duet is Iggy Pop. The other half is a woman with a very ecto-ish kind of voice. I was wondering if anyone out there remembers the song, and if you can tell me who the female singer was." I'm pretty sure that's Kate Pierson of the B-52s on the female vocals. Also, I'm enjoying reading about all of the artists discussed on this list-I must say I only know about one-third of them, so I'm not really sure where to start adding to my CD collection. My favorite artists now include October Project (definitely my #1), Sonia Dada (my #2; more on them in a minute), Happy Rhodes, the Sundays, Joe Jackson, Julia Fordham (early stuff), Roxy Music/Brian Ferry, Tori Amos and Seal. I generally dislike any artist with a scratchy/raspy voice- ranging from non-ecto artist like Bruce Springsteen to some mentioned here like Alanis Morrissette (although I do like Joan Osborne OK-go figure). Any suggestions on what to buy next and where? I live in the Philly area and get to listen to WXPN 88.5 FM, which is a superb radio station for playing alternative and ecto music. I'm glad to know there's a name now for the music I like-it was always so hard to explain to people about this genre. One note about Sonia Dada. While they may not be exactly ecto, I highly recommend them. They're three male gospel singers partnered with a five-piece band (guitars, keyboards, drums) and they produce music with great harmonies and good lyrics. Since their music is also hard to categorize and rather sophisticated (they're closest to rhythm & blues, IMO), I thought might be interesting for this mailing list. Great live act, too-they're touring now in the western US. Nebraska? It was west of Passaic, NewJersey and east of Pomona. Anyway, here in the wilds beyond Chicago, it was in the sixties at seven o'clock in the morning, when the wind took my toll money on the way to work. By midmorning, it had begun to rain. Hard. And later in the afternoon, the sky the unhealthy yellow of a bruise's circumference, the temperature began to drop. By seven pm, when I got home, it looked as if Our Land Lay Under the Curse of the White Queen. On the way to work this morning, when I don't think there were any degrees outside at all, anywhere, I was stopped at a red light when a firetruck -- one of the big, articulated, ladder-encrusted ones -- came at me from the other side of the intersection. As it slowed to turn, its following end, apparently unnotified of the change of direction, tried to pass the leading end -- on the right, yet (the cart trying to pass the horse, as it were). The whole episode served to remind me to carry a change of underwear at all times. So I'll take your snow any day. -charleydarbo ------------------------------ From: Troy Cockrell Date: Fri, 19 Jan 1996 12:08:22 -0500 Subject: Rolling Stone Review Hi, Just read the review for Tori's "Boys for Pele"....
