Sadly, I couldn't contribute to the Happy Gift Project this time around, but I hope I will do so when the Happy Birthday comes along this coming year. 1995 was, for me, not as blissful as 1994, music-wise (1994 was of course the year that I bought the full Happy Rhodes Music Catalogue, plus got to know some other "obscure" artists), but I did see Noa, Tanita Tikaram and Frank Boeijen (to name but a few) live. Hopefully, 1996 will expand my musical horizons a little further, and hopefully by then I will also experience the return of a working tori amos mailing list. I'll be seeing her in March, so that's something to look forward to.. Anyway, I'm rambling like a fool, and I just wanted to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy new year. Hope 1996 will be as good for you as 1995 was for me. I'll see you on this very mailing list next year. In the mean time, I'll be putting up a tree and recreating my Webpage! Anyhoo, I'll see ya then! The first track on the CD (~30 minutes, the one you skip on an audio cd player) *does* contain a couple of executables...setup.exe (which installs QuickTime) and freedom.exe which is the actual software. One of the things I like about the package is that, other than QuickTime, you don't have to install anything on your harddrive. All I can think of is that you ought to disable the auto-launch thingy that's making Win95 play CD's when you stick them in. It's one of my favorites from that era. Well, Michael, I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is that the Urban Verbs will be playing at the 9:30 Club in DC this coming Thursday (the 28th). The bad news is that the band broke up *years* ago and this is a one-off thing. The Urban Verbs were the first band to play at the 9:30 15 years ago, and the owners of the club convinced them to get back together and be the last band to play there. Kinda cool. While I'm sure to derive more pleasure from *owning* the disc than actually listening to it, it does have some surprises: Love Spirals Downward's rendition of the Wahoo Borays song from "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" is *fantastic* - even better than I thought it would be. Suzanne's voice is perfect for the song. I can just see her and Ryan performing it to a crowd of Whos in downtown Whoville. :) lovesliescrushing does a track called "Jingle Bells (Snowblower)." It's great; you'd hardly recognize the song. The title really does speak for itself. Area does "O Come Emmanuel." I had been wondering where in their discography this track came from, since Area broke up 6 years ago. Well, (*SHOCK!!!*) this is *new* Area. Steve Jones has picked up a vocalist they've recorded a new track. Lynn Canfield told me when Area broke up that she wouldn't be surprised if Steve did revive Area in the future - it has come to pass!!! Does anyone know if a new album is in the works? Regardless, this has put me in a joyous mood. Thank you all for making my first year on ecto enjoyable and warm. I went out and got Tribe's _abort_ and three listenings latter I still think it's pretty cool. I knew I was going to like it when it opened with Janet LaValley singing counterpoint to the bells. I still haven't picked out any songs as favorites but the overall quality is there. On the subject of tribute albums I like _of these reminders_ from Projekt. It's a 2 CD set of covers of Black Tape For A Blue Girl songs. I'm not sure how genuine a tribute that is organized by the owner of a record company to his own band can be but it did produce some excellent music. It's also a good intro to the other Projeckt bands if you like some of them but don't know the others. The set includes two songs by Love Spirals Downward (a very Ecto band) that aren't available elsewhere. Neal Copperman wrote after I came back from my US holiday (which happened about two months ago): > Welcome back Uli, we'll expect full reviews of every one of those discs > by Tuesday... This was after I posted a list of the 40 CDs etc. I bought while in the states. Now I'm catching up on my still megahuge email backlog (~8000 messages right now), and I'm getting to this answer now... Well, by now I feel at least a little bit more qualified to give a few reviews of the CDs. So here they are again, sorted a bit for my convenience: - - Throwing Muses - House Tornado - - Throwing Muses - hunkpapa - - Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona Haven't listened to them that much yet, but they fit into the Throwing Muses genre ;-). It's quite different from Kristin Hersh's solo efforts, a lot more rock oriented, but I like it. - - Heather Nova: Oyster (US version including new version of Sugar) Heather's music is one of my favorite discoveries of the past two years. I've seen her 4 times in concert, with growing audiences (from ~70 people to ~1200 people). I'll see her again if she's touring halfway close to where I am, that's for sure. 'nuf said. Or, no, not yet: "You feel sleepy. You listen to my voice. You take your money. You go to the next CD shop. You look for Heather's albums. You buy them all. You go home. You wake up. You'll enjoy it!" > - Victoria Williams - Loose After I'd heard another VW CD a while ago, I thought I couldn't stand the voice. But it grabs on. Quite good. > - Mari Boine Persen - Gula Gula (not for myself, but a present for someone on > the tour. This present also involved a discman...) I have that album for 2 1/4 years. As such I really feel qualified enough to comment on it: I love this album! The present worked out, the person receiving the gifts liked the music and said she hadn't heard anything at all like this before... Unfortunately after another CD (Tori's 'Winter' with the handwritten lyrics) she stopped accepting gifts anymore. :-(. But that's a different story, which has nothing to do with the music. (She also liked Tori, which she also never had heard before.) > - Loreena McKennitt - The Mask And Mirror (Australian ltd. ed. with live in SF CD) The first time I've heard LMcK live at all - and she's awesome! Anyone got the full 9-track promo CD for sale for a decent price? ;-) > - Jane Siberry - lovin' cup (CD single) Haven't listened to this one that much. But I like it better than the two albums I have of her (The Walking and When I Was A Boy). > - Peter Gabriel - SW Live (yet another CD single in cardboard sleeve - made in > Austria...) Collector's reasons - I like the whole album, and as such also this single. You should buy the full album instead ;-) > - Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet (CD single) > - Bjork - Isobel (CD single) And again, collector's reasons (I now have 15 CD singles by Bjork, nevertheless, that's just a small percentage of what's out there). > - Cocteau Twins - twinlights > - Cocteau Twins - Garlands Haven't listened to these much so far. No comment yet. Oh yes, one comment: On 'twinlights' you can actually make out some words ;-). Otherwise (just listening to it), it's a bit too slow for my taste. > - indigo girls - 1200 surplus (2 CDs) Quite nice, it grabbed my attention because of the digipack-made-completely- out-of-cardboard packaging. And of course I recognized the name ;-). Haven't listened to this live album too much as well, so no big comments again. > - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here > - Pink Floyd - Pulse (2 CDs) I knew Pulse from a colleague, found the packaging unique, liked the music, so what? ;-). WYWH was another "EWS" supporting grab. Both were bought as long-time growers/not-listen-to-them-ten-times-in-a-row CDs. And as such they function quite well. > - Cyndi Lauper - twelve deadly cyns... and then some > - Cyndi Lauper - Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun) (CD single) Collector's reason, as I do have Cyndi's other 4 albums there's not that much new stuff on here. But at least a little bit. > - enya - the celts (someday I had to get the new cover of that one...) Exactly. And I still like it. If you're only considering this for the different version of Portrait, then don't buy it. It's 'just longer'. > - The Sugarcubes - Stick Around For Joy > - The Sugarcubes - It's It Both were bought because I always thought I should buy a Sugarcubes album. Unfortunately, It's It contains remixes only. In case of the Sugarcubes, this doesn't work for me. The other one is ok. > - Alanis [Morissette] - Alanis > - Alanis [Morissette] - Now Is The Time Had I knewn that Alanis Morissette sounds different (completely) than Alanis, I wouldn't have bought the Alanis albums. As such, these two were the only complete loss of the CDs I bought. > - Sheila Chandra - The Zen Kiss Strange! But good! How can anyone do that with a *voice*? > - Queen - Classic Queen I wanted to have a best-of-Queen CD for a long time. Unfortunately, I think that of the 2-part-Best-Of-Queen collection I don't like half of the stuff. Unfortunately, this is distributed evenly over the 2 CDs. They should've done only one. But with CD prices in the US being that much cheaper, this did cost me as much as about 1/2 of a CD, so it was ok... > - Utah Saints - Utah Saints (now part of my Kate ColleKTion) ColleKTion and nothing more... > - Kristin Hersh - Strings (EP which is looonger in the US) But which doesn't contain anything not on the UK EP plus the Hips and Makers album. Nevertheless, a nice addition to the collection. And I do like the music quite a lot. But I already knew that in advance. So this is collecting again. > - M People - elegant slumming (this one had the 'morning song' of the > bus tour I made in the US, so this - despite not being an example > of my musical taste - was a must-have) Exactly. > - PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me I had 2 other albums by PJ Harvey before, and this one fits in normally. Quite hard stuff, but quite nice. The only problem with PJ's music is that I cannot listen to it while I work - I completely lose my concentration on the work I'm doing. This is even worse than with Diamanda Galas. > - Maire Brennan - Misty Eyed Adventures About the same quality as her first solo album "Maire". Quite nice, but nothing you couldn't live without. > - Sinead O'Connor - Famine / All Apologies (CD single) Collector's reasons again - you should buy the album instead. Or rather, all three of her 'normal' albums. (I don't count that big-band style album as 'normal'...) > - Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories - Tails I was a bit sceptical about this album. And even if the lyrics are not that bright, I like this album quite a lot. Maybe that's because most of the times I don't really listen to lyrics. That only happens with very special music (Kate, Tori, Sarah and just a few others), and with lyrics in German (even if my English isn't that bad, my German is better. And as such I cannot close my ears with German lyrics ;-) ). > - The Moon Seven Times - The Moon Seven Times Haven't listened to this one that often, so no comments yet. > - Go West - Aces And Kings the best of go west (contains The King Is Dead, and > as such it's now part of my Kate ColleKTion) And again, nothing more. > - Jewel - Pieces Of You I like it better now than when I first listened to it (half a year or so ago), but again, I haven't listened to it that much yet. > - Kate Bush - Live At Hammersmith Odeon (NTSC video + CD) Obviously I already knew this one, and I even do not have a NTSC VCR. So obviously this is just a collector's item for me. > - Kate Bush - The Sensual World (MiniDisc) > - Kate Bush - The Red Shoes (MiniDisc) Well, anyone got a MiniDisc player? I couldn't listen to these ones yet. ;-) Seriously, these are colleKTors items again. The person in the shop (HMV in Washington DC's Georgetown) even asked me if I was sure that I wanted the MiniDiscs ("Yes, I've been looking for these for ages!"), and again, these aren't normal tapes ("Yes, I know"), and again, they cannot be played on normal systems ("Yes, I know, I don't have a player but I've been looking for these FOR AGES."). After that, he gave up and sold them to me ;-) So, now there were a lot of "not yet listened to it that much"s in there. But what do you think? Having time for listening to music but not having time to keep up with email? Hard to imagine. I can pick out a couple of CDs each day and take them to work (CD-ROM player, SoundBlaster, speakers, and *even a DAT tapedeck* on my desk), but normally I cannot take a lot of time chosing these CDs, so I chose where I already know that it pleases me.
