Can't rave enough about this band. What amazes me is that they're from South Jersey! I thought all the culture was on the other side of the river in Philly. Most of the culture in this area can be found in yogurt. Yet there they are, Sojourn, starting to make it big. I hope. Folx, this be good stuff. Well, I heard "Caught A Lite Sneeze" the other day, thanks to the .wav file woj pointed everyone to yesterday. The sound quality sucked and there were people talking in the room at the time, but I heard enough to know that I'm probably going to like it a lot. Now I'm even more eager for the album... sigh. (Sue, I couldn't help myself and read your review -- not only do I hate you, but you write much better reviews than I ever could! :) I also got RDT #9 in the mail -- Richard and Missy Caldwell live! Apparently they're planning on getting #10 out around the same time as the album, with tons of cool stuff about that. Yay. No new revelations in #9 -- it's all been posted here thanks to their info list. Except for the tidbit that Tori seems to be back to her natural hair color at last, that is... Four Bitchin' Babes were amusing Saturday night. I'm not into them enough to buy the albums or anything, but I'll gladly catch a live show, which is highly recommended. Plus, since they got rid of Julie Gold (ack ptui), they're light years better. Gold's replacement is Debi Smith, who is amazing: she's a Babe with a bodhran, and she knows how to use it. ;> Larne responded: > This sounds like a compilation project called "Saturday Morning." I know exactly what you mean. When I was 14, my parents abandoned our ancestral home (Maine) for Florida, where Santa comes in on a Jet-Ski and the retirees get a big kick out of stringing lights all over the palmetto trees on the patio. I haven't had a white Christmas since, unless you count the year I was in Europe and spent the holidays in Switzerland with the family of a very good friend of mine (I don't count that year, since it was so completely different from any holiday experience I had ever had and no one from my family was there, so didn't feel like Christmas at all). This year we're going to Tucson to spend the holidays with my sister, which is a little bit better -- at least it's cold there at night, and apparently the snow line is down to 6,000 feet in the mountains now, which means a 20 minute drive and you've got yourself a white Christmas. But it's just not the same. Of course the New York City area is going to have its first snowy December 25th in 12 years, and I'm going to miss it. Sigh. It's been almost 10 years, and I'm still not used to it. Matt Bittner wondered: > While listening to it I was also wondering, has Happy ever been > approached by the "larger" record companies? I'm just sad that she > doesn't have a larger audience than she does. I feel the world is > losing out not knowing anything about her. She's been approached, but apparently she's said thanks but no thanks to them all so far. I think whats she's holding out for is a deal similar to what Loreena McKennitt has with Warner: she keeps her own label (Quinlan Road) under her own watch, and Warner takes care of the worldwide distribution and promotional stuff. I think that would be an ideal situation for Happy -- that way, she wouldn't have to worry about promotional costs and could actually play outside of Philadelphia, imagine that! I hope this happens soon, because IMNSHO she's shooting herself in the foot by being such a perfectionist and refusing to play live without her entire band and the whole road show thing, when she should follow Ani DiFranco's lead and just grab her guitar and Kevin his bass and get out on the road and *play*. But that's a rant for later. :) > Is it just me, or do others find her vocal lower range *sexy*? So, this has provided some > "good cheer". Meaning, you've been going back to the Pagan roots of the holiday, or what? That's what I've been doing for the past few years (would all the other lapsed Catholics in the audience please kneel), and it's worked quite well for me. I manage to somehow celebrate the Solstice on the 21st every year, even if it's just keeping the lights in my windows on all night, and I enjoy the evergreen (when I showed up at my parents' house last year and saw a fake tree in the living room, there was a Scene) and the lights. To me, this time of year really transcends religion, and I wish more people would realize that. We're all on the same planet experiencing the same cycle of the seasons, and no matter what your calendar says it's still the Solstice, which means the days will start getting longer again (or shorter, depending on where you are :), and it's worthy of commemoration, dammit. > Gee...to have a graphical browser. First off, welcome to ecto! It's nice to know that there are other ectophiles popping up in the NYC area. Second, I'm not sure if the station would be your cup of tea judging by the other bands you listed, but WFUV at Fordham in the Bronx (90.7 FM) plays Happy quite a bit (though not as much as I'd like ;), as well as other ecto artists like Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, October Project, Innocence Mission, The Story, Dar Williams, The Nields, Ani DiFranco, and tons more. They also play a lot of Folk, Blues, Bluegrass, and traditional country, which isn't for everyone, but they play so much cool stuff that if something comes up that's not your genre, hold on a minute and it'll get better soon. :) Plus, they carry the World Cafe, Mountain Stage, and Echoes. I know their signal reaches out to Long Island -- you might want to check them out. Speaking of which, Loreena McKennitt is their featured artist tomorrow!!! All day, they'll be playing several songs an hour. Yay. When they did this last year it was exceedingly cool, so anyone in the area should tune in. mjm wanted to know: > How fast can you open a shrink-wrapped CD? Yeah, but it's so hard to convince anyone to have text-only equivalents, so lost are they in the world of flash and graphics. Which is fine if you're on a T1 or loading your pages off your local hard drive, I suppose. I even set up nice guidelines on bilingual pages that are readable with both text-only and graphical systems for the local FreeNet that I volunteer for. Roundly ignored for the most part. But it's Matt's comment I find sorta funny. "Click here for a text-only page"? How can you click anything with a text-only browser? Sorta betrays the GUI assumption. :) Ob-Ecto: I dropped in at the Nettwerk offices on the weekend for the weekly disc sale they hold in their cramped lobby and picked up a few presents. It's kinda neat to go there, because they have copies of essentially *all* of their product inventory available for sale slightly less than retail. So if you can't find a disc you want at the local A&B Sound you can go straight to the source... I picked up Single Gun Theory and Bel Canto, both discs I've had trouble finding locally. They had a Mac in the corner and a guy there enthusiastically demoing their interactive CD-ROM stuff, which was fun. I didn't pick up their "Decadence" boxed set, though - a wee bit costly. 5 discs for $50 is a good deal on a per-disc basis, but it is a chunk of cash I can ill afford to spare right now. It's basically a 10-year retrospective of the label with various tracks and remixes from all the major bands and artists that Nettwerk has carried over the years. (eg: Skinny Puppy, Lava Hay, Mystery Machine Grapes of Wrath, Severed Heads, MC 900 Foot Jesus, Taste of Joy, Wild Strawberries, someone named Sarah McLachlan, etc.) Each disc includes a multimedia track for Mac and PC CD-ROMmies and the box comes with a nice little booklet. I didn't write down the tracklist, but it should be on their Web site sometime soon. (http://www.nettwerk.com/) They also had heaps of the usual Sarah merchandise - posters, cards, a rack of T-shirts, etc. I asked a guy I know who works there, who happened to be around, how Ms. McLachlan feels when she visits the place - isn't it kinda weird to walk in the door and be greeted by a barrage of your own face? Or is she used to it by now? "Oh, she hates it!" he said. Heh. - Neil (The phrases "click here," "Under Construction" and "" should be banned) K. - -- Neil K.
