Why is the world so intense? I picked up this cd on 20 Nov, and have played it 4-5 times. Whilst I enjoy it, it hasnt really grabbed me (not like the first 2 albums anyway). I really think Enya needs to try and extend herself a little more, she is starting to sound the same and really needs to vary her style or approach her music from a different perspective with each new release. Considering that it has been quite a few years since Shepherd's Moon, the Memory of Trees is very disappointing. I give it 6/10. Now Jane Siberry is someone who is great at surprising her fans with her dramatic changes in taste/style/influences. I think Enya needs to take a lesson here. I really like Enya's music, but have been left a little disappointed from this latest release. Still its #2 on the album charts here in Australia, trailing behind the Beatles Anthology release, so its been a very anticipated release. I have heard the complaint that this new effort doesn't really break any new ground and I cannot really argue with that. However, my expectations may have been somewhat different. I really didn't expect any *grand* departure from what she has done in the past. After all, Enya is just, well *Enya*! If you haven't gathered by now, yes, I'm a pretty big fan. Her music touches something deep in my soul that is very difficult to explain. And there are not many other artists that seem to have this effect on me. I like the whole album, but not surprisingly, some tracks stand out more than others. I believe "Anywhere Is" is the first single to be released from the album. Seems like a logical choice as it does have a more mainstream, pop sound to it. Although "China Roses" would have done well as a single also. I like both songs just fine, but I would not list them as my favorites. As for those, "Pax Deorum" is a dark, haunting (although most of Enya's music could be described this way) tune with Latin lyrics that just add to the dark mood. "Athair ar Neamh" is a Gaelic song that is just beautiful and ethereal. Really shows off Enya's voice. Possibly my favorite on the album. The last track on the CD, "On My Way Home" is a light, airy, optimistic tune that puts a smile on my face. "On my way home I remember only good days. On my way home I remember all the best days. I'm on my way home I can remember every new day." --Roma Ryan That's just my take on the new album and I think most Enya fans would really enjoy it. I know I do. Victor Wooten is the bassist, and primarily plays a standard electric bass (although he is considered innovative) some of his basses have "whammy bars". Now, Victor's brother calls himself Futureman and plays percussion via a modified Synthax with pads on it. It's not a bass at all. It's more or less an expensive "guitar synth" with "triggers" adapted to it. The Flecktones were a four piece until relatively recently. They used to have a keyboardist/wind player. Guy) Date: Fri, 8 Dec 1995 13:30:14 -0700 Subject: Testimonial Banquet Well, I picked up the XTC tribute album (Testimonial Banquet) yesterday. And my reactions are... hm. Mixed, I guess. I tend to have such feelings about cover albums generally, as I feel a lot of tribute albums are rather uninteresting. To me there's a very fine line that artists must negotiate to avoid either slavish and pointless remakes versus stripping the song of whatever made it unique in the first place and making it sound like any other song by the same artist. Unfortunately most of the tracks fall into one of the two camps in my mind. It takes great talent to take someone else's song and render a new and worthwhile version without losing its particular values. For instance the Rembrandts' cover of Making Plans for Nigel is okay, but completely loses the quintessential English nature of the song, which disappoints me. And They Might Be Giants' cover of 25 O'Clock sounds a bit like a photocopy of the original in terms of its arrangement, which is a shame as TMBG have done some amazing stuff in the past. But lest this sound like a negative review I have to agree with everyone else who's raved about Sarah McLachlan's cover of Dear God. She's taken the XTC song and done a totally Sarah version without losing any of the strengths of the song, IMO. She's got the anger and bitterness and hooky chord changes without making it sound like she just stuck a cassette in the deck and pressed rec-play. Her song really redeems (ahem) the album! What else? Oh yes - I noticed also that Nettwerk have a fancy 5-disc boxed set out for $50 with previously unreleased tracks and other gimmicks from their past 10 years of making records. Might be interesting. Not sure what the track list is yet - probably has a lot of Skinny Puppy and whatnot on it along with the Sarah McLachlan though. - Neil K. - -- Neil K.
