Just like to get both sides of the I really had forgotten why I fell in love with EBTG in the first place, since it had been quite a long time since I had listened to the old stuff (being without a turntable). Their debut album was one of my first 'ectophillic' purchases (if not one of my first album purchases). Listening to Tracey's vocals is pretty much guaranteed to have tears welling up in my eyes.... If you like the simple trumpet/bass/drum sound of Jane's Maria, you might want to take a listen to EBTG's debut CD.... It's amazing, but I first saw EBTG on MTV, back when it offered an outlet for good music.... I don't do concert reports well, so I usually don't. Tracey & Ben were backed up by 2 other folks (one one double bass, and one on synth-drums/sequencer/misc percussion). The synth drums/sequenced stuff really bugged me, but it let them pull off their more complex songs (including one of Massive Attack's songs). The accoustic bass worked very well, and was quite a contrast to the 'fake' drum sounds.... Tracey looked fine, Ben looked very thin (wasn't he in hospital near death a few years back?). EBTG has a web site at www.ebtg.com that's worth checking out. - -j - -- Jeff Wasilko, Systems Rep, Information International Inc. +1 617 937 9400x204 (jeffw@triple-i.com) Pager: +1 800 759 8888 pin 507-9658 ------------------------------ From: Martin N Date: Tue, 5 Dec 1995 14:21:36 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: World Cafe CD OK! For those who missed my post on the subject a couple of weeks ago, this is our annual holiday compilation tape for Happy and, more peripherally, for ourselves, the ecto community. The procedure was simple two weeks ago, and it's simple now: Record the music of your choice (recorded or live) on a c-100 cassette, ideally with a spoken intro, and snailmail it to: Doug Burks, 2223 NW 59th St., Apt. 2, Seattle, WA 98107, USA If you can't record a spoken intro directly, you can email a text to me at mapravat@prairienet.org, and I will read it into the final product, using my all-new recording equipment. If your mail server should happen to crash, you can snailmail texts to me at: Mitch Pravatiner, 8025 S. Oglesby Ave., Chicago, IL 60617-1134, USA Original musical performances are encouraged, but dubs of previously recorded material are just as welcome. All musical and spoken material in your main contribution may not exceed a total of ten (10) minutes in length. You may, however, submit an unlimited amount of "filler" material for use in filling dead air on the final tapes (most material submitted for this purpose over the years wasn't actually used, but sometimes you get lucky :-) ). You need to send it to Doug by _December 15_. We thank those who have responded positively so far, and look forward to their being joined by many more of you. Greetings everybody, Some of you may remember that I posted to this list concerning a TV special my company produced called JUST PASSING THROUGH, featuring October Project, Shawn Colvin and Julia Fordham. I know there are many Shawn Colvin fans on this list because many of you have contacted me about this, so I want to inform you of the following: MTV has contacted us and asked to screen the program for possible broadcast. This represents an enormous opportunity for Shawn to receive massive visibility across the country -- and possibly around the world, through MTV's international stations. (For those who were not on the list at the time, "Just Passing Through" follows Shawn, October Project and Julia in a "day in the life" documentary, showing what life on the road is really like for these artists both on stage and behind the scenes. It's earned rave reviews in Chicago and will be seen on New York PBS station WLIW on January 6.) I urge each and every one on the mailing list to contact MTV immediately to let them now how much you want to see Shawn on the air. Grass roots campaigns like this REALLY CAN WORK! This presents us with a chance to actually do some good for artists about whose work we care deeply. The single Chicago broadcast of "Just Passing Through" yielded impressive results for October Project, Shawn and Julia -- imagine what could happen if they were seen in such a high profile broadcast on a national and potentially international basis. And all because we rallied around them! The screening copy arrives at MTV tomorrow morning (12/6/95) -- I would suggest that those planning to send a note or make a phone call do it ASAP! Direct them to: Ed Paparo MTV 1515 Broadway, 24th Floor New York, NY 10036 The main # is 212/258-8000 (The switchboard can supply you with a fax number) This is a fascinating and exciting request for MTV to be making, and represents an opportunity to break some of our favorite artists to a massive audience. So let's go to it, fellow Shawn fans! We've got a chance -- let's take it! With thanks and excitement, Scott Silberstein HMS Media (And please feel free to contact me via e-mail with any questions or comments at: "sbshms@aol.com".) P.S. I mean, there's this whole generation of kids out there to whom >vinyl records are as quaint and old-fashioned as the 78s my dad had were to >me, so completely have CDs taken over... > > - Neil K. Have a feeling that this was yesterday... I do not agree that vinyl same quaint for new generation. 1) 33s taken over 78s because there was a breakthrough in quality. 2) On vinyl analog sound could be recorded and payed back with better quality than from CD. (Except cheapest boomboxes designed for travel/kitchen where vinyl could not be played at all). In other words CDs popular because they are more convenient. In many cases quality lowered, especially in 80s, when A->D converters were very expensive. Nevertheless, on consumer market CDs taken over just because people don't even care about the quality (clarity) of sound that defined by audio high-end manufacturers. The mid-price DAC may cost $2,000 compared to shitty $10 built-in chip in boomboxes. I don't want to start high-end discussion here, but just to let you know that Joni Mitchell vinyl sounds far better and more lively than the same CDs. And I can hear that on my 'entry' level equipment total cost of which is just above $2,000. I don't think it is much - the cost of equipment should be comparable to cost of collection you have and might be estimated as 1/4th to 1/2 of it. Otherwise what the reason to have 150 CDs and listen them on a $150 ear-bleedy-tastic discman! Granted she has a weakness for squishy sixties style love/romance francais ballads of desire, but heck anyone who can cover Sarah McLachlan's Vox with just a guitar and hit all the high notes without any visible effort or strain is *ok* with me. That's right. Right here in the windy apple we have a singer who does early sarah pretty much the way I'd imagine early sarah doing early sarah. Complete with all the riffs on an acoustic guitar. But mostly, Donna writes her own songs. And she plays coffeehouses in chicago. And she records a few songs here and there and is, she says, working on an album in bits and pieces. And she has a three-song "demo" cassette out that sounds quite good. Also funny was that one of the people at this show (at the lunar cabaret - -- a very intimate place (read small)) who I was talking to not knowing who she was, was Amy the guitar/bass player from My Scarlet Life. In fact, she got Donna water. And I was able to impress everyone when I said "oh, used to be Big Hat." It was funny because I was talking to her before the show about my a cappella group and our upcoming concert, trying to explain to her what type of acap we did (answer: every kind). And then I ended up sitting with a bunch of other people I knew (or the person I was with knew). That about accounts for everyone who was there. I will post to ecto next time Donna is playing -- some of yous in chicago may want to check her out. Errrr, actually, she is playing this coming Monday at the NARAS showcase at excalibur. I know that Ben has been very, very ill, hence his extremely skinny status, can't help shuddering everytime he takes his shirt off in the Missing video, they reached No. 3 here, any luck in the States??? Also Neal asked me if Aimee's new album was out in Australia yet, but I have no idea as I've been here in London for the past 7 months! Anyway, personally I really like it, although I still think that Whatever is the better of the two. To all those AImee fans I suggest you give it a couple of listens to before drawing conclusions, after hearing her do most of the album live here in London I loved the album even more. I really love You could make a Killing, Julianna Hatfield's backing vocals make quite a nice contrast to Aimee's voice. Par for the Course always get me right in the gut, especially the beginning lines, "You put down the phone and cried for yourself and what you couldn't have..." I enjoy the beat of That's just what you are and Superball, although I managed to pick up the That's just what you are single back in Australia last year and it had Superball, and an alternate version of Stupid Thing (my all time favourite Aimee song) on it too. Ray another good ballad, I always love the slow ones! But I love the first line of the whole album "You fucked it up....." She really knows how to get everyone's attention. Anyway, I just hope that things work out with her and Geffen she seems to have had so much bad luck!
