The real genius behind the Rutles songs is Neil Innes, of Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band fame. He just NAILED the Beatles essence with those songs. The more you know about the Beatles' music, the more you'll laugh at the Rutles tunes, which are packed full of references. For example, in "Love Life", a parody of "All You Need Is Love", near the end Stig Nasty (Neil Innes) begins to sing "Hold My Hand", an early Rutles "hit", just like in "All You Need Is Love" when John sings a little bit of "She Loves You". And of course, there's the "A Day In The Life" endless-chord parody, but I'll let you hear that one for yourself. :) D^2 ------------------------------ From: Kerry White Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 20:34:49 -0600 (CST) Subject: Rutles+Primus+Bel Canto Hello, 2nd on the Rutles-get it! Esp. the vid: extra cuts!! Also try the 1st Klaatu album, (available w/ the 2nd one on 1 cd.) I had 1 Primus cut: the excellent cover of Have A Cigar. Then I read that Happy listened to,"any Primus" so I taped them on the Conan show. Anyone know if they are consistant,ie: is the rest of their new cd that good too? The mini-cd that had Have a Cigar had other covers that left me cold. Bel Canto Birds of Passage: great, but I spent $16.95 at Blockbuster Music and then found it at Best Buy at $11.95! I've lost my music-predator edge!!! Once upon a time, I would have scouted around for the cheapest after listening to it free at BM. Sigh! I don't even *think* about buying music by the-cover-and-a-'gut-feeling' anymore! That was how I found Van Der Graff Generator and Peter Hammil, amoung others. It's also pretty medieval-sounding (although not so traditionally instrumented as _Aion_). It also contains the glorious _The Summoning of the Muse_; if you like Lisa Gerrard's voice, it is pure ecstasy. Many people also like _The Serpent's Egg_. I do too, although it's not so much a favorite. On the other hand, the opening track ("The Host of Seraphim") is another glorious showcase for Lisa's vocals. ------------------------------ From: Steve VanDevender Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 21:54:50 -0800 Subject: Diagnosis: EWS Last week I went to my favorite record store, and picked up a copy of Loreena McKennit's _The Mask and the Mirror_ and October Project's _Falling Further In_. I also put in my order for _The Keep_. As you may remember, I heard the opening track of _The Mask and the Mirror_ on the TV show _Strange Luck_, although I didn't know it then. "The Mystic's Dream" is indeed a great song, and the rest of the album is great too. I've had Loreena McKennit recommended to me before. I'm glad I finally got around to finding her. _Falling Further In_ was also worth buying, although it just doesn't quite do as much for me as some of my other favorites. Mary Fahl's voice is gorgeous, and the songs are often inventive and well-written. Amazingly, my order for _The Keep_ came in Monday after being put in the Wednesday before that -- not bad at all for Oregon. I picked it up yesterday, and while the clerk who was there tried to figure out where the clerk who had called me had put the CD, I got to listen to some live Tori Amos -- unfortunately in Tori's self-indulgent mode that I don't like very much. Like all the rest of Happy's published work, _The Keep_ is a must-have for any Happy fan (I, too, answer "What Happy CDs should I buy?" with "All of them."). The acoustic version of "Temporary and Eternal" is glorious. _Life on Mars_ is glorious. Well, OK, everything on the CD is glorious, although I have to admit that I like the album versions of "For We Believe" and "Hold Me" better than the reworkings, which are nevertheless worthwhile for their different approaches. And I'm a little dubious about yet another version of "Save Our Souls". But these are minor quibbles. It's amazing how fresh 11-year-old recordings from before the beginning of her career sound today, and a tribute to Happy's incredible talent. I even like the cover art, although I do think that the liner notes are nearly unreadable for lack of contrast. ------------------------------ From: Steve VanDevender Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 22:06:32 -0800 Subject: More KEEP ravings Ariel Brennan writes: > I like the acoustic sound of The Keep. From the first time I ever heard them play (street-busking outside my bedroom window when I was living in Kingston), I've always enjoyed their live shows, and they've lost none of their freshness. >comedic band from kingston, ontario... i've heard them compared to they >might be giants, but, having never heard tmbg myself, i cannot confirm. Aside from the comedy, I wouldn't really compare them to TMBG, because the Worms are a folk-comedy group. Can't get much more flat-out fun than the Worms. Damon's right in comparing them to Moxy at their silliest. In their early days in Kingston, their songs were only part of their act; they were a comedy troupe that did skits and songs... but people kept requesting their songs over and over so gradually the skits got phased out. They remain firmly rooted in comedy, however, and are the funniest musical group around, as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, they are consummate showmen, and if you are ever fortunate enough to have the Arrogant Worms come to your town, don't miss the show on pain of death. They still play a lot of busker festivals and the like so keep an eye out for them! Here's a sample of the lyrics from one of my personal favourite songs, "William Shakespeare's in my Cat": William Shakespeare's in my cat, it sometimes seems so deep That the guy who wrote _Twelfth Night_ chews on my socks while I'm asleep I really am impressed I own the cat who wrote _Macbeth_ But if something's rotten in the state it's just his fishy breath. He wrote _Romeo and Juliet_, but his greatest story yet Is comin' back as someone's pet... Gettin' neutered by the vet He got his paws stuck in a net Then he said to be or not to meeeee--YOW! But she has so many types of "styles" ie girly high pitched voice, deep belting voice, and everything in between. this isn't a big deal, but she uses them all in one song, and that bugs me. i feel that it's not because she chooses to, but rather she doesn't know any other way to hit the note. if she was able to retain that girly voice and still sing low notes, or belt out high notes....but instead she switches not because she chooses but because she doesn't know how else to hit the notes. unfortunately i can tell it is a matter of her ability as opposed to a matter of her choice. does this make any sense? i mean i still love her, and continue to listen to shiva diva doo wop and save the linoleum (pieces of you is on hold until i get enough money to buy it, and the record store next door who have it on hold have another 40% off sale). which reminds me. the store is having a 40% off sale on dec 7 & 8. this may break me. if you don't hear from me, you shall know why. love and nonsequitors. irvin ps. currently listening to KITCHENS of DISTINCTION. why did it take me so long to get their latest COWBOYS AND ALIENS? if you like lush you might like them, though they have a male singer. damn that is some fine music. anyone have a KoD mailing list info or complete discography? did they release any singles from cowboys and aliens? i only know of one from DEATH OF COOL. ------------------------------ From: Markku Kolkka Date: Thu, 23 Nov 1995 13:43:03 +0200 Subject: Re: What became of the SPARS code?
