So I am doing so now before I read everyone else's reviews. It was very interesting. She is very interesting. I never realized she is so tiny. And she was wearing a rather bizarre outfit (as I take it she is prone to do). But she basically got up there with the attitude of "I'll do exactly what I want to do and you can all like it or not like, I couldn't care less." But everyone liked it. Park West was not sold out by the way. Sat right in front, as usual, with toute la gange (ecto people, etc.). Charlie (a pseudo-ectopreson) was sitting right under her nose crocheting hats the *entire* show!!! A few of the better cuts from Maria were really excellent (I can't distinguish one song from another even after repeated listens, but I did recognize these as the ones I liked :-) -- the band was excellent, esp. the pianist, bass player and drummer (didn't much care for horn guy). She did alot of show tunes, most of which I did not know cause I'm just not that familiar with those. Alot of the time she really wasn't singing loudly at all, and it seemed to me almost like she "wasn't really trying" though since I've never seen her before, I figure this might just be her style, or at least her new style, I dunno. She encored with two songs from WIWAB which I thought were easily hilights. I won't say which songs so as not to spoil your fun if you don't know what they are yet. Anyways, I also got the impression that she was a true lover of music (TM) and that is part of her message in the way she sings whatever she wants. She also did a chord-building exercise with the crowd that was pretty cool. Some of the people I was with were creaming over this whole show... I liked it alot but still don't think she's a "goddess" on the level of someone like Kate, for the simple reason that she radiates too much attitude and I really don't think her voice is that strong. This "attitude" I refer to is sort of some intangible thing that I've always felt in her music and also saw in her live show -- to contrast someone like Kate -- I feel that Kate is much purer in her presentation of her music -- she doesn't let herself get in her way, almost -- whereas Jane can't achieve this total immersion (not to say she isn't immersed, though) without taking alot of baggage -- I don't know exactly what the baggage is -- with her. Nevertheless, she has some great songs and some fabulous albums (my favorites are Bound by the Beauty and her debut, which are collectively in my book her most straightforward and attitude-free works). *Definitely* worth going to see, though, I'm glad I finally did. - -mjm ------------------------------ From: Sue Trowbridge Date: Thu, 16 Nov 1995 10:34:47 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Ani CD recommendations? anthony baxter wrote: > Ok, so lots of people seem to think highly of Ani DiFranco. Well, "Out Of Range" has found a happy home in my CD player, where it will no doubt stay for a good long time...I had never heard Ani until a couple of months ago, and now I'm really captivated by her work. 'Course, I'm sure there are people here who have *all* of her CDs (so far I only have "Out of Range" and her new one, "Not a Pretty Girl," which is also very good), and I probably will too, eventually. :) But I think "Out of Range" would be a fine one to start with. - --Sue Trowbridge trow@access.digex.net +++ trow@charm.net http://www.access.digex.net/~trow/ Musical icon of the month: Robert Moog ------------------------------ From: "S. I have every album but one -- I think it's called "Like I Said" and it's a collection of songs from previous albums as far as I know (does anyone know if it's remixes or just the same recordings? I had the info in my Ladyslipper cataloge but the cats ate it) so I haven't been too motivated to buy it yet. > > Ok, so lots of people seem to think highly of Ani DiFranco. So I think > > I'd like to order one of her CDs. Can anyone recommend which would be The first one I bought was Not So Soft -- I was in NYC and wanted to listen to something I'd never heard of before, just pick it up and buy it and take it home (that's really unusual for me). I didn't like it at all at first, I thought her singing style was obnoxious but after further listens realized that I *loved* her singing style, the lyrics, the guitar, everything. Not So Soft is, I think, one of her best -- very cheerful and sarcastically funny. My favorite song from that one is called Small World, the line: and I was aware that with every word spoken and shared I could see her shaking subside I said sister looks to me like you're going to be fine makes me teary every time I hear it. I bought Out of Range next, which I *adore* -- and *laughing* no, it isn't because there's a song that mentions coffee a lot, either. This one is really folksy and fun with some really lovely songs about love, including "You Had Time" which I like partly because of the beginning -- a piano part that sounds (to me, anyway) like someone just picking out notes and then slides somehow into a full fledged song. One of my favorite lines off of that album is: I'm calling from the diner the diner on the corner I ordered two coffees one is for you I was hoping you'd join me 'cause I ain't got no money and I really miss you I should mention that too So next I bought Puddle Dive, and all I have to say about that particular album is that the song "blood in the boardroom" makes me laugh really hard *every* time I hear it and more people should learn to be like this about people having their period. I wasn't super impressed with Not A Pretty Girl, which is her latest one -- partly I was just disappointed that it's a lot less folksy than her other ones, and seems to have less... Oh, I don't know, less of a sense of humor or something (although the hidden track at the very end is very cute). But then, I don't listen to CDs if I can avoid it, I listen to tapes because they're a million times more portable. So I've just recorded both my Ani cds onto tape and hopefully will listen to them both more because of it. Imperfectly was the next buy, and aside from the extremely irritating "every state line" (I mean, maybe it's great to listen to if you've been pulled over by the cops a lot, but I've never been pulled over once and so it just ends up sounding boring to me) it is wonderfully introspective and interesting. When I'm listening to the album I always say this line along with her, laughing as I do: they joke about the status quo to break the ice once the ice is broken I hope they all fall through And I just bought her very first tape, called Ani Difranco, this weekend. While I do enjoy listening to it, you can really tell that she was self-conscious and nervous for a lot of the recordings and so she comes across sounding kind of weird. I'm glad I bought it, but it isn't really on my "listen to all the time" list. Did anyone make it to the end of my really boring message :^)? Sorry for going on and on like that, hope I was helpful in some way. Yes. 1976 ABC Records: Sweet America contains another version of Starwalker and many Native American weaves. Good luck finding it. I haven't seen it on cd rerelease. I have seen 2 different "best of"s and a couple other LP rereleases, so it's possible. Vanguard is doing the cds, though. The "best of"s are a good buy because they each contain music from different 2-LP sets. Although her music has always contained that Native American root sound and social comment on the plight of the Native Americans, the earlier Vanguard released music may not fit the classification of "other albums like this one" because they are more acoustic. Kinda depends on what you like, huh? If you ever find Changing Woman on cd, grab it. Er, grab 2 and send me one. It was originally from MCA Records, so . . . Lovely, ecto poetry with music to match. This reminds of when I was in Mpls to see Tori Amos and one of the weekly arts rags there said something like "Tori Amos: Self-indulgent, annoying pop creature bares her soul in public. Skip it. But do go see Ferron (playing the same night) whose brilliant song-crafting and riveting social commentary are second to none." I thought this was very funny. I would have loved to see both. But it would be hard to dispute that Tori in this case was far more the gripping live player than Ferron (who I saw 2 weeks ago for the 1st time) was. Don't get me wrong -- Ferron was great and also coming from a very different place than most performers that I've seen, which I thought was a nice change from the set-em-up knock-em-down concerts I usually see -- but I really thought this paper had recommended the wrong thing.
