Greetings Ectophiles, everytime I listen to those wonderful strings on October Project I have this uncontrollable thought that "they remind me so much of a Mellotron" - I think I'm losing the plot here. Anyways, the thought of Mellos got me to wondering whatever happened to Pavlov's Dog - surely an ecto band if ever there was one in the 70s? - and October Project do at times remind me of them, especially on 'Late November' :-). Thoughts of David Surkamp and Mary Fahl doing a duet together... yes, I definitely have lost it 8-) Neill ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Wed, 15 Nov 1995 00:39:39 -0500 (EST) Subject: Holly Cole, I-girls, and other oddities I had a bunch of things I wanted to mention recently and hadn't gotten around to: I saw Holly Cole in concert a week ago or so. I didn't have Temptation, so it was a pleasant surprise that they were handing them out at the door. Seemed a bit of a foolish idea, since aren't the people who would pay to see HC the ones most likely to actually buy the disc? Anyway, I thought the show was a lot of fun, though coming the week after Jane's stunning show didn't help Holly's standings. I like Tom Waits a lot, so I was familiar with his versions of many of the songs, and while Holly's were nice, they never really wow'ed me. There were some stellar moments in the show though, and the whole thing was fun. The absolute highlight was her version of "Calling You". I love the version from Baghdad Cafe, and didn't even like Holly's for about 45 seconds. I don't know what happened after that, but it just clicked into place and started sounding wonderful. It ended up being an overpowering, moving moment. Everyone there recognized it as the highlight of the show, and the applause was easily 5 times longer than any other song. (You know how there is sort of an excepted length of time to applaud after each song? It was amazing how much this exceeded that.) Holly seemed pretty moved just by singing the song, and the overwhelming appreciation she got caused her to burst into tears. Is this song on any of her domestic releases? The guy next to me had a Japanese disc with it on it. I was a bit surprised at her personality. I expected her to be kinda cool, a bit aloof, sultrier. Instead she was sorta giggly. In fact, she kind of reminded me of Bjork attempting to be serious (and naturally failing, as I can't actually picture a serious Bjork). I was surprised again when I got home and popped in Temptation. The decent versions of the songs live did not prepare me for how much I would enjoy the recorded versions. Some of those songs really came to life, and made me rethink the songs I already knew. I like the disc far more than the show (and I liked the show a reasonable amount too). - ---------------- Recent purchases (first impressions all): Indigo Girls: 2000 Curfews - While a few of these songs don't strike me, there are dozens of others that are fantastic. Some really amazing covers, and versions of songs that totally revitalize them. Makes me anxious to see an i-girls show again. It's been a number of years for me. Oh yeah, and if you like the versions of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, you should definitely seek out Buffy Sainte-Maries album of a few years ago, Coincidence and Likely Stories. It's a pretty solid album, and likely to appeal to any i-girls fans. David Massengill - The Return: David opened up for Jane, and was an immanently likable performer. He spent as much time telling stories as playing music, but he did both so well that it wasn't a problem. I'm not sure what it is I like about the disc, but I like it lots. It's mellow folky, full of clever and intriguing story-songs. They are all understated, yet somehow maneuver there ways into my subconcious. Oddly enough, the contributions of Jane and Suzanne Vega didn't jump out in the few listens I've given this. Allisson Krauss - Now That I've Found You- the collection I'd never heard her music before, and fear it's a bit too country for me. It's still excellently put together and performed, and after a few listens, I've found a handful of songs have won me over. I was surprised at just how traditional it all sounds. I guess I didn't expect someone so young to be so steeped in the older country styles. I was also surprised that there wasn't nearly as much fiery fiddling as I expected. Garbage is clumping through town on Thursday. They don't seem to have taken the world by storm as much as I expected, but I'm still looking forward to their show. I've seen Ofra Harnoy play many times, always in a classical context (though the combination of her and Loreena is certainly mouth watering!), and have always been very impressed with the emotional intensity of her playing. She is definitely worth going to see for that alone, but she also has a pretty fine technique (not that I think Rostropovich or Yo Yo Ma have anything to fear! ;-)). Comparisons with Jacqueline du Pre may seem preposterous, but I'm convinced I can see a similarity of approach in their playing. Regretably I never got to see Jackie play live, so I only know her playing through records and TV; her recording of the Elgar concerto with Sir John Barbirolli is most definitely a desert island disc!
