We Torontonians are lucky; on Loreena McKennitt's last stop here, she played 2 nights... on one night, Ofra was a surprise guest, on the next (the one I went to) Anne Bourne was the surprise guest. If only I could have gone on both nights! BTW, I think it's Ofra -Harnoy-. Oh, and for Neal's benefit, I think George Koller played cello on at least one of Loreena's albums...lemme check... yes, on _Parallel Dreams_. (He might have played on a couple of songs on her last two albums too, but I can't check because I've loaned them out). As long as I'm being anal, I think it's _Due *South*_. Incidentally, the last few days they have been doing some filming in a building at the end of my street. Unfortunately, I've only seen the show once, last year, given its awkward time slot opposite _Friends_. _Northern Exposure_ has had some ectoish music on as well. On the subject of that junkmail spammer, I was immensely surprised when I got a copy of his e-mail from a mailing list dedicated to graduate students in Psychology at my school (U. of Toronto). That list has a distribution of maybe 50 people... how the hell did this guy get our address, anyway? Unbelievable. I'm glad he got his service cut off. All this Jane talk is making me feel incredibly foolish for not having snapped up tickets to see her in Toronto when they first went on sale weeks ago. I did get to see her open for the Indigo Girls last summer, though, which I thought was an amazing stroke of luck. And to wrap up this little note, I live a few doors down from a bar which features live heavy metal-type bands (pretty much exclusively). So imagine my surprise when I hear strains of Bjork wafting down the street from the place... Wierdness! I happen to have quite a lot of material from this man, as will be obvious from the discography. Perhaps not the most urgent artist to add to the ecto list, but certainly one of the most interesting ones as far as I am concerned. Subject to availability I am also willing to send CD's by Frank Boeijen abroad, which may also be interesting for some people. >Name of artist: FRANK BOEIJEN >Country of origin: THE NETHERLANDS (Europe) >Type of music: Varying from guitar oriented songs, to synthpop, to 'chansons'. >Status: ??? >Covers/own material: 99% own material. On "Wilde bloemen" he worked with Henny Vrienten (who was rather famous with his own band "Doe maar" in the 1980's), Harry Sacksioni (well-known Dutch guitarist), Henk Hofstede and Robert-Jan Stips (from the Nits). After this album he did a tour in 1992 with Harry Sacksioni and Belgian singer/songwriter Raymond van het Groenewoud, which was totally sold-out, but no material was ever recorded. (At least, not officially.) On "De ontmoeting" he recorded a song with Belgian singer/songwriter Stef Bos. His latest release, "Stormvogels live 1990-1995" was recorded live in 1995, with guest appearances of Henk Hofstede, Stef Bos, Khadja Nin, Jo Lemaire, Koen Wouters (from a succesful Belgian popgroup Clouseau), Ramses Shaffy (another famous Dutch artist, whose successes date back to the 1970's), and Liesbeth list (Dutch chansonniere). >Producer: Mostly Frank Boeijen. >Comments: In his now 16 year career, Frank Boeijen rarely had a chart hit in Holland. His most well-known tracks are "Zwart Wit" ["Black and white"], a song written after the cowardly murder of Kerwin Duinmeyer, a black boy, by a white fascist kid, which shocked the Dutch population in 1984, "Kronenburg park", a song about prostitution and the hypocrisy of husbands, and "De verzoening" ["The reconsiliation"], a song about Frank's difficulties with his personal and professional life. While his singles (a grand total of 42, many of which contained extra tracks unavailable elsewhere and not likely to be released on a compilation album...) weren't that successful, his albums all achieve the platinum status in Holland, and most of his concerts are sold out well before the actual date of the performance. He was recently named as one of Holland's top 100 millionares. Commercial success aside, his songs are perfect examples of European songwriters craftmanship. Every album contains at least five perfect songs, and his best work (which was released, IMO, between 1985-1991), will probably never be equalled by any artist in this region ever. It is, however, too bad that his work is written in Dutch. It makes his albums less accessible for people outside Holland and Belgium. Fortunately, most of his work is very melodic, and so I can recommend it for evryone who doesn't let themselves be discouraged by language barriers. For those who try Frank Boeijen, they won't be disappointed. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Questions, additions and other queries? Mail me! I had a quick look at it the other day and it appears to be a collection of well-known cover songs. They did the music for a dance-piece performed by the Sydney Dance Company. The cd comes in a special box with an extra cd called "Boxes" which is also the soundtrack to a dance-piece performed by the SDC quite a few years ago (late 80's anyway). The * boxes* cd is hard to come by these days so its a good idea to re-release it (at the price for 1 cd). Regards Garry (potterg@vrnotes.roads.vic.gov.au) PS. The first store I went into - a local "chain" - had this puzzling look when I went in requesting Happy Rhodes. And then proceeded to type in "Happyroades" as they went searching their computer. Ahem. "She's an artist, and her last name is R-H-O-D-E-S." "Oh, I knew that." Yea, right. Idjut. Then when I went into Best Buy, they said that the regional office in Kansas City had it, but they were NOT getting it in. Fools. This town is so ectoignorant, it's not funny. At a surprise birthday party for my sister-in-law, I had on repeat first Loreena's _the mask and mirror_, then Nan Vernon's _Manta Ray_. Well, one the the less-intellingent people at the party proceeded to change MY stereo over to the gross, geezer-rock station. If I would have seen that person do it, I would have shot that person. What I love is when I hand a clerk a piece of paper that says "Rhodes, Happy" and he *still* looks up the wrong thing. Alas, Raleigh NC isn't covered by any of the good chains, just the schlocky ones. We do have a "local chain" (I know exactly what you mean), and they're just as bad as the big chains with two exceptions: - one, they actually do get special orders processed eventually, - two, they have some local target audiences they try to cater to. Unfortunately, ectophiles aren't one of them. I may have to break down and get The Keep from AG as a Solstice present to myself. Yet I have seen people get the cold shivers and insist after two tracks that something else be played... I will admit that the production adds a lot to my enjoyment, and that I would have serious doubts about a live show. > "some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't > they?" - the Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz > -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Reminds me of my Favorite Bullwinkle Quote, which I thought I saw on an ectosig not too long ago: "Gee, for a powerful magnate, you don't pick things up too quickly, do you?"
