You're comparing apples to oranges...both artists are very different. Without knowing your musical tastes it's hard to sugggest. Jane's touring in support of a jazzish album, plus she does a few standards (like the Girl from Ipanema). She's touring with 4 other excellent musicians. Ani's a punk-folk performer with a very unique guitar style. The time I saw her, she was touring with a drummer/backup vocalist. Both artists are very good. One thing you should keep in mind is that Ani nearly lives on the road, so if you don't see her now, you'll probably get to see her another time in a few months. Jane, on the other hand, probably won't be on the road again for another 2 years or so. I'd say take this rare opportunity to see Jane... Jeff ------------------------------ From: Tamar Boursalian Date: Fri, 10 Nov 95 10:47:06 EST Subject: Jane vs. Ani Hi, I am a huge fan of both Jane Siberry and Ani Difranco. I've seen Jane 4 times on 4 different tours and I've seen Ani twice. Given the choice, I would go see Jane, and I'll tell you why. Each time I've seen Jane Siberry live, it's been a completely different show. The first time it was a full band with backup singers, a little choreagraphy, and stuff like that. The second time it was just her on guitar, another guitarist, and a pianist. The third time she was alone and did a bit of spoken word, showed some videos, played a couple of songs (on piano and then guitar), and did a question and answer thing. This last time was also with a band, and I think you've all read some reviews here. So each time something different, and each time completely wonderful, beautiful, magical. If you skip her this time, you probably won't see anything like this show in the future, and if you do get another chance to see her live, it may not be for quite some time. Ani, on the other hand, practically lives on the road. Her shows are also wonderful, magical, and all that. I really really loved her both times I saw her. But if you skip her this time, you'll probably get another chance, and her shows don't vary as much. She certainly doesn't do the same show all the time--far from it--but if you miss this one, the next one won't be so drastic- ally different. So, I vote for Jane. Just do it. Really. By the way, I finally got The Keep last night! It's really quite beautiful. And I finally got the people at Cutler's Records to get her stuff out of the folk section! Victory!! I'd also like to thank Kevin Bartlett for clearing up that thing about the Yes list. I had a hard time believing that Happy would make a plug for herself like that. That dork over at Notes From The Edge should have his head examined (I was going to say something else, but it would have been less-than- charitable). I just picked it up yesterday. The 4 songs are Big Star's "Jesus Christ," "Amazing Grace," "Sinkhole," and the Carter Family's "Can the Circle Be Unbroken." Everything is acoustic and most of the songs sound vaguely country. "Amazing Grace" is really no different from the Throwing Muses' version, except it is just Kristin and an acoustic guitar. Over all, it isn't nearly as bad as some of the reviews I've seen, but a big disappointment in comparison to _Hips and Makers_ and the "Your Ghost" and _Strings_ EPs. Guy) Date: Fri, 10 Nov 1995 12:22:20 -0800 Subject: Jane/Ani Well I've only one small thing to add about the Jane/Ani question, and that is the concert that's more likely to be appropriate to you may reflect your mood. Jane (the several times I've seen her live over the past ten years; I haven't seen her current tour) is an introspective performer. Vulnerable, thoughtful, quietly intense. And her songs cover a very wide emotional range. Rather different from what I know of Ani. To be fair, I've never heard Ani live - just a bunch of her recordings. But her style in studio seemed to be generally either aggressive and angry or pissed-off and noisy, banging away on her guitar. (okay, okay - so I'm no big fan of her guitar antics) I suspect her live performances are less tiresomely single-tracked - I've heard a long interview with her and she seemed quite cheery and personable - but regardless I anticipate a rather different mood to her shows than a Jane show. Of course, the problem is that you never know what sort of mood you'll be in for a concert when you have to buy your tickets! And a good concert is a fine mood-altering device. - Neil K. - -- Neil K. Unfortiunately I was let down. Way down. I know this is ecto, where seldom is heard a discouraging word, but I figured that I ought to warn people in case they bought this based on my earlier ravings. There is a lot of screeching on this cd. It frequently sounds as if the singer from the cranberries lost all her talent and set out to record something that would damage whatever stereo it was played on. I don't have anything against dissonance but this is just pointlessly unpleasant. If you have a choice I would strongly recommend _faint_ and equally strongly recommend against _le petite mort_. Oh well, I guess you have to put up with getting burnt every once in a while in order to find music that is truly extraordinary. - - Deniz dbucak@netaxs.com "Cogito ergo es - I think therefore you is" Robin Williams in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen ------------------------------ From: David Dixon Date: Fri, 10 Nov 1995 13:47:17 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: ecto-digest V2 #277 On Fri, 10 Nov 1995, Sheila Rieser wrote: > > > ON Cello we've got Jane Scarpantoni, Anne Bourne, Jane Sieber (just found > > > her in Ferron's band), Heather Nova's cello player, and maybe more. Yeah, I don't have any trouble reading them there either :) Actually, I have to admit that the first time or two I saw Lisa, I had some problem understanding the lyrics too. I don't know if it was the venue or not. I'd heard a tape a few times, but wasn't that familiar with the music. Now it's pretty hard for me to judge, since I'm familiar enough that I could understand the words even if she mumbled them all :) It's too bad if you can't understand them, because they really take her songs to another level. I listened to a tape a friend made me repeatedly, but due to the way I listen to music, I never really put the stories in the songs together. When I finally got the CD and sat down with the booklet, new horizons stretched out before me. All those fragments in my head actually added up to something. Anyay, I'm glad people have been enjoying her shows. Stop by and say hi to her if you go. She's very friendly and is quite familiar with ecto. In Penguin Cafe Orchestra there is Helen Liebmann on Cello and Geoffrey Richardson on Viola (plus on Broadcasting from Home there are two additional male violin players). On the Oz front, one of our, IMHO, premier 'ecto' groups 'Not Drowning Waving' has Helen Mountford playing cello. NDW has a sort of alter-ego called 'My Friend The Chocolate Cake' which is more mainstream in style. I actually saw PCO a few year back and they were supported by MFTCC - brilliant! I was discussing this very subject with a musical friend a few weeks back and his response was "perhaps it is because men are attracted to an instrument with a similar tonal/pitch range of a woman and..." Anyways, I'll finish off by saying that I once say Ofra Hanoy 'playing' cello and, well... it's etched indelibly in my memory for reasons other than just her beautiful playing. I've never seen anyone play an instrument with so much passion.
