Don't feel alone as others have mentioned having trouble finding Bel Canto's stuff also. I was able to find _Shimmering Warm & Bright_ through the online Compact Disc Connection for $13.82 U.S. dollars plus $3.50 for shipping charges. They also have _Birds of Passage_ and _White Out Condition_ for a little less change. If you are unfamiliar with the online service, simply telnet to cdconnection.com and you will see a text based menu that you should be able to follow fairly easily. I believe there is also a CD service on the WWW called CD Now or something like that. Not sure if they have any of Bel Canto's CD's though. If you have trouble with the cdconnection, let me know and maybe I can help you out... I guess its a new compilation album for women by women type thing. Most of it was pretty unremarkable (including Annie Lennox's cover of a Bjork song), but the highlight for me was definitely Patti Smith's Version of Don't Smoke in Bed. Definitely the most compelling song and video on the special. VH-1 also aired a quite good 1 hour documentary on the Pretenders. They sure seem to be getting better at what they're doing--offering quite in-depth specials on artists--rather than the fluf and idiocy and non-music that MTV continues to promote. I listened and watched as he "sang" First We Take Manhattan, and wondered for most of it.. "...is he really hip, or really square"?. After a few of that, I decided I liked him and just enjoyed it. FF to about 3.5 years ago, when a coworker brought in FBR by Jennifer Warnes. After hearing FWTM, I realized that this was the song I heard that night. I asked my office mates about him, and Walter brought in The Best Of... Which I like pretty much, and The Future, which I absolutely love to this day. The JW album is fine, IMO, but I still love LC's versions best (FWTM, notwithstanding... The REM version is better, IMO, but only because of arrangement problems). >In my humble (and widely contested) opinion, Leonard Cohen is one of those >brilliant songwriters who shouldn't be allowed to sing their own songs (Tom >Waits and Bob Dylan are others). I agree with your naming BD, but the other two, IMO, are *the definitive* singers of their songs. I really love the Tom Waits stuff... I have Bone Machine, and I also love Black Rider, which has been described (by brni, I think) as "nearly unlistenable". IMO, Bob's voice was novel, but has since become nearly a caricature of itself... still, he may be the most appropriate singer for some of it. LC's voice... is certainly among the lowest pitched I ever hope to hear, and it is slightly "gravelly", (but not like Tom's, rather, it's more like smooth, rounded gravel). Tom Waits' voice, on the other hand, is like that automotive safety glass mixed in with the broken beer bottles and sand (and spattered with blood) on the shoulder of the road after an accident. It was fantastic to be able to see her in person. She had the little diamond in her nose and was wearing two white tee-shirtish shirts (one short and the other long) over white and maroon paisley pants. She was smaller than I expected (I'm not sure what I expected) and moved just like she does on the videos! The turn out was pretty low. In fact, we were able to choose first or second row seats--in the middle or sides or wherever. We took second row center. Before the show, the announcer came out and asked for "out of staters." I was born and reared in WV so I didn't respond and Jill lived there for ten years, so she didn't either. I wish we had. The second question was "who are you here to see?" and not one of the out of town folks said Jane Siberry. This seemed to surprise the announcer since she was the headliner. She was the last act of a four act Mountain Stage. The first was Abra Moore--kinda Edie Brickellish and tiny, almost junky thin. She used to be the lead singer for Poi Dog Pondering and her songs were fun. She had a bass player, a harmonica player (who kept playing air guitar??), an electric guitar player, and a percussionist. She played guitar as well. Her songs were entertaining and her voice was almost too winsome. Her solo cd is called _Sing_ and I liked her enough to want to try to find it. Next came Julian Dawson who was probably the low spot of the show for Jill and I. Nice but not all that inspiring. Then came Frances Dunnery (sp?) who was fun. He sang borderline silly songs with "messages." Jane commented on this when she came out. Her comment was something like, "I'd like to thank Frances Dunnery for his lines, 'If I'm good enough for my god, I'm good enough for me' that kinda lets us off the hook for spiritual responsibility--all gone, responsibility to others--all gone, and responsibility to self--all gone. All right that one's not all gone." Those of you who can hear Mountain Stage next week will be able to get the quote right. Anyway, next came Moxy Furvous, a band of four singers and such. They were pretty silly--really silly--and did a song accompanied by Nazi salutes about "America's Hero--Rush Limbaugh" which had me howling. Part of the humor was seeing these guys dancing about goosestepping and saluting. Good stuff but a pretty bad lead in to Jane. 'Cause she came next. Her first comment was the Dunnery one above and then she went into "My Mother is not the White Dove." There were, of course, technical problems which she handled in a really cool manner--singing and pointing quietly at the offending amp. From here she seemed confused. She said, "Now I'd like to do a song about my father. It's called "Going Down the River." Last time I checked I've never recorded it. . . ." Then she looked about to start and said, "No, I change my mind. Let's do "Begat Begat," no, "Going down the river" and the piano player began "Begat begat" and somehow was playing another song a second later. I though, ok--this was set up. The song was a really neat one and seemed "begat begatish" though I suspect this is due to the confusing beginning. Then she did the "Girl/Man from Ifiginiah (SPSPSPSSPSPSPSPSPSPSP?) which she stooped in the middle of and said something like "I change my mind" and started "Nature Boy." Even though the middle part--the dead stop--was distracting, I found this section of the show really entrancing. She ended with "Love is Everything" which was fantastic. I suspect that even those who hadn't heard of Jane had to be caught by it. And here is the pobrecita Jane part. She didn't get to escape off stage. Larry Gross came out with the rest of the musicians and they all sang Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane." I know--two Canadian acts, you gotta do a Canadian ender but Neil Young??? Jane seemed baffled and made some pretty funny faces. Abra Moore came to her aid at one point supplying her with a lyric sheet which, at least, gave her a place to stand in front of a microphone. When we saw Robyn Hitchcock on Mountain Stage, he had a similar reaction to Gross's "group sing." (Though, his looks toward Gross were a little more poisonous than Jane's. And he got to sing a Beatles song!) (Yes, I do like Neil Young in a sentimental way since I listened to him in high school because he knew Joni Mitchell. So, please, don't rush to defend him.) All in all, I'm not sure that Jane was prepared for the Mountain Stage experience. Since I suspect that she isn't going to add some Southern (or Appalachian) dates, this is probably all I'll get :( If only they scheduled DC shows on weekends!!!!!!! I guess you'll just have to try again! :) okay here goes, moonpools and caterpillars, _lucky dumpling_ i kept seeing their name when i was looking in the "moon 7 times" section, and eventually got curious enough to take a chance on their single, "hear," which has a great soaring sarah-ish chorus, wherein the "hear" in the line "and i hear it's been done before" acquires about seven syllables. I dug it, so i picked up the album, which is in the same sort of slightly buzzy poppy vein as, say, eve's plum or letters to cleo. I liked it, although nothing stood out on first listen the way "hear" did. maybe a tad generic, but it went down very easily. the lyrics, however, don't seem to stand up to terribly close examination. heather eatman, _mascara falls_ i guess i saw this one while wondering whether or not to buy one or more of echobelly's "king of the kerb" cd singles. ;-) (deferred till i get those balances down...) or maybe it's that since becoming obsessed with heather nova my brain has been reconfigured to seek out the word "heather" wherever it may appear...and then i heard the song "sheila" on the occasionally quite ecto-ish WRNR 103.1 (esp. early saturday morning with janet's "women of note" show) and it reminded me of lisa germano, so guess what...the rest of the album reminds me more of lisa loeb sonically, a weird mix of sheryl crowe and christina amphlett vocally, but i really like her lyrics. (although she uses the word "fat" in her songs about as often as richard butler used the word "stupid" on the first psychedelic furs album. (i.e., in almost every song)) what are these lyrics that i like, you ask? well, "i saw you kissing johnnie walker" grabbed me, and how about: "this borrowed dress doesn't do much for me but it's doing its best. this stolen purse it's got a bad history but mine is so much worse. i've been down on my knees drunk while you're out doing standup, you're making love to your punchline, baby." speaking of being reminded of lisa germano: a big thanks and a see-ya-in-debtor's-prison to woj for recommending susan voelz! she also reminds me quite a bit of lida husik, but this is far from being a bad thing in my ears... doug now playing: blackgirls: _happy_ ------------------------------ From: THE OLIVE-LOAF VIGILANTE Date: Mon, 06 Nov 1995 23:06:32 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: too many snippets for one meagre subj: line!
