Yep, except her name was Stacey Swain, and the first band was called SSQ. The "hit" was Synthicide. They adopted the post-disko club beat sound when renamed to Stacey Q. The first album was "Better Than Heaven." I liked SSQ a lot better than the next incarnation, but Stacey got a lot cuter as the music got more commercial and less imaginative. I hear they did better as a dance band than as a synth band. SSQ was dated 2/84. Even saw them on Late Night a few years ago. |^^^^^^Please don't add "*@aol.com" to your twit filter. I'd seen about half a video on a local public-access cable video show, and thought they were too cool. And I can't stop playing the CD. I'm humming songs in Japanese to myself while walking around, saying "cha-cha-cha" and all sorts of other stuff. P5's interesting mix of retro-rock with ectoish vocals and dual-language lyrics just make a very very compelling treat. On Wednesday a pair of girls with guitars with cats on them swung through the Black Cat in DC. Lida Husik's hometown return seemed to have brought the family out of the woodwork. She was giddy, giggly and hilarious, unlike her last tough girl with an attitude show in Baltimore. Both Lida and SF Seals had a similar sound, low, understated Liz Phair-like vocals over catchy muscular bass/guitar/drum trios. I personally preferred the Lida Husik set over Barbara Mannings, but I'm also more familiar with her stuff. (Can anyone tell me anything about BM? I felt suddenly, accidentally hip when I noticed while browsing that Spin Alternative Music Guide in the bookstore that one of the BM albums I picked up at the show was on the top 100 alternative albums. Haven't listened to it yet though.) The Black Cat also has a fine pinball game (Indianapolis 500) in the adjoining bar, which will definitely merit future visits :) (Like before tomorrows Julian Cope show.) Thursday was a stellar Jane Siberry performance. After Meredith's post, there can't possibly be much to say. I don't have Maria (yet), but my guess is that the show consisted of standards, songs from Maria, probably some unrecorded songs(?), 2 from WIWAB as encores, and a brief snippet if "It Can Rain All The Time" performed a capella until Jane couldn't remember any more of it. (Oh yeah, and the song from Arcane.) The show got off to a slow start, with poor stage presence and vocals by Jane, which made my friend and I a little worried, but after about 15 minutes, everything started to click into place and soared (ouch, wrote sored first!) for the rest of the set. My friend had never heard Jane before and was completely wow'ed. I vote her as one of the most personable and generous performers around today. After each song, she sent cues to the band on what she was going to do next, as well as personally thanking each of them after almost every song. Oh yeah, the interaction between Jane and the band, particularly her and the piano player, were stunning. It's rare to see a group so in tune with how the other people think, who can clearly improvise and play while still maintining the flow and structure of the song. Where did these guys come from? How long has she been playing with them? Opener David Masingell (who I knew only from someone's excellent HBP contribution) was a solid opener. He played only about 4 songs, though he had a full set since he must have spent easily 20 minutes chatting amiably with the crowd and telling stories. His dulcimer was quite beautiful too. Highlight had to be Sightseer, where Lisa Tribble's hilarious and playful backing vocals looked like an exceptional lost Saturday Night Live skit. Who is she, anyway? I picked up his latest album The Return, which has guest vocals by Jane and Suzanne Vega as well as the Sightseer song. No, I haven't listened to that yet either... And last night I caught the Baltimore Premiere of the new movie Theremin. Since Theremin's have been discussed here in the past, I guess it's worthy of mention. It's an intriguing, though not wholey satisfying, documentary on the creator of the Theremin, which features lots of incredible vintage clips, early and recent performances by virtuoso Thereminist (?) Clara Rockmore, and some very surprising details. Director Steven R. Martin was on hand to fill in some amazing facts that couldn't be included in the movie and add lots of interesting insights, and we even had a real life theremin demo. (BTW, Moog is apparently releasing a build your own theremin kit, so anyone with some mechanical inginuity and $245 can now have a theremin.) While Vickie described it best some years ago, I guess I better at least say that the theremin is a musical instrument that is based on manipulating magnetic waves, so that the performer does not actually touch anything concrete. They wave their hands in the air, using one hand to control tone and the other volume. Theremin's seem to have had their greatest notoreity as the creators of all those spooky sounds in The Day The Earth Stood Still and It Came From Outer Space. Much to my surprise, probably the most popular example of Theremin playing can be found quite prominantly on the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations". Anyway, the film is definitely worth checking out, so keep watch of the art houses near you. Neal ------------------------------ From: jeffy@wam.umd.edu Date: Sat, 04 Nov 95 21:18:53 EST Subject: the keep Well, I *finally* found a copy of _The Keep_ in DC. I've only been searching for almost three weeks. In any event, the downtown Tower had a single copy (filed with a bunch of other HR albums under...h. Of course. Idjits.) First off, let me express surprise at the many people who've said positive things about the cover. Frankly, I think this is by *far* the worst of Happy's cover art. Second worst would be the CD cover of _Rearmament_ (the tape cover was brilliant, but I don't care for the CD reworking...). The cover is terrible, the inside art is terrible (and at least 50% of the text, including Kevin's description of the album, is virtually unreadable). The back cover of the liner notes is the only decent artwork, but the back of the jewel box, where the same art is reproduced with overlain text, is a mess. While the BTC problem of upside down text on the spine of the case was avoided, it doesn't matter as you can't read the white text on the super-light-green-to-dark-green gradient. Overall packaging is a major disappointment. That said, the packaging is absolutely irrelevant, because the contents are BRILLIANT. Once again, I'm simply awestruck by the talent of this woman. Wow. The voice just gets better 'n better....and the music stays incredible! Lots 'n lots of acoustic guitar. Ahhhh. Rush out, buy it, and play it over and over again. It is the second album by the norwegian band Weld called 'Hello Walls'. After getting great reviews in places it their debut-album shouldn't get such I decided to give it a try (the review is further down) The first time heard about them was when I saw them live the summer of 94 at the Quart Festival. Vibeke Saugestad (recognize the name ?? Yeah , I've mentioned her before) was only 17 years then but she impressed me with a rich and beautiful voice. The band itself sounded very well together. I had just heard Velvet Belly earlier that day and I was afraid that this concert with Elvis Costello should leave me with a bad impression of the upto then great day. But Weld were so good that I wasn't afraid anymore :) And Elvis Costello was great - much better than I had expected of him. The band-members are based in the town Moss not very far from Oslo in Eastern-Norway. What I think is great is that they don't consider moving to Oslo after the success with their first album. Earlier a lot of people moved to Oslo when they got popular (and still do) - pretty lame if you ask me. The bandmembers are as follows - Vibeke Saugestad - lead and backing Vocals, electric and accoustic guitars, percussion Joern Johansen - Electric and accoustic guitars, backing vocals Stig Joeraholmen - bass, percussion, backing vocals Rune B. Johnsen - drums, percussion, cards & backing vocals The story behind the recording of the album is pretty neat. They did look around to find a location for a long time. It was because they wanted to do it outside a studio. They had become desperate when much of the summer had gone without finding a place when they suddenly got lucky and found this house outside Aasgaardsstrand in the Vestfold county. It is some place south of Oslo. I'll check out a more exact location cause I've never been there myself. The owner of the house, an actress, was going abroad and said yes when they asked her if they could rent the place. Aagaardsstrand is kinda like a colony for artists of different kinds and is known to take good care of their guests. The house got paintings on the walls and a beach included in the rent. The norwegian painter Munch once lived there and it is said he could leave his bills ... what exactly is meant by the last comment I'll have to check some other place. It could actually mean a couple of things. The article where I read this never states exactly what was meant, so ... When they arrived the place they actually found a painting of their own band painted by a 72 year old painter living in Bergen (hey, I like unuseful info :) hanging on one of the walls. The painter who made it, is 72 years old and is living in Bergen. It was so much to see around there that they decided to make a scrapbook. (I'll scan sometime in the future the pictures in the article and make a homepage for Weld). The album was recorded mostly in the daytime cause they didn't want to wake up their neighbours with a few exceptions (errr...the last comment doesn't mean they did want to wake them up but ... you know :). The sessions were done in the living room with Vibeke sitting up under the roof singing down at the rest of them. Hey, the vocals have become really great that way - so why not? Their first album had songs written and prepared before starting the recording. But parts of Hello Walls were written in studio. As they say it themselves - "Natural Tools was no classic but it was an allright debutalbum (can't comment on this cause I have only heard the songs off that album live). Vibeke's voice is really growing. I loved it last year when I heard her but now she's more grown up and and the voice is much richer and she sounds like she knows more how to use it. I get a lot of associations listening to their songs. It is very clear that they have got inspirations from many sources - what I can hear are groups like - X, Breeders and american guitar-based music in general, Cranberries, some country, yeah a lot. Anyway - I like the album a lot. Norway really needed a new band cause the old ones (which I didn't even like very much) are getting too old and uninteresting. It's growing in norwegian alternative music at the moment. I am more optimistic about the future now than a few years back when I thought the music in Norway were going down the drain. Hello Walls got its weaker sides - especially when they try to put everything into one single song. Try to mix breeders inspired music with country - you'll get a pretty weird result. But anyway those songs doesn't drag my opinion about the album down that much. Songs like Loop, Spin Out and Middle Of Somewhere are enough for the whole album. Vibeke really gets to show what her voice is good for. Just have to say if you find the album - buy it - the vocals are a good enough reason to buy it ... Most of you won't even find it but don't worry I'm planning a norwegian sampler with music not on the scandinavian one. But that'll be sometime in the future - I got some more CDs to buy before that time. errr..this mail ended up somewhat longer than I had planned - the review got somewhat short but I hope the info is useful at least :) bye for now, ________________________________________________________________ Yngve Hauge | __ ___ __ | | _ www: http://ulke.himolde.no/~yngveh/ |-- | | | ||-- |_||| |_ Irc-nick: One Alien |__ |__ | |__|| | |||_|_ ------------------------------ From: kcd@bull.cray.com (Kevin Dekan {x66440 CF/DEV}) Date: Sun, 5 Nov 95 21:40:53 CST Subject: Bel Canto - shimmering, warm & bright Hi EctoPeople! While it is decidedly shimmering, *cold* & bright in the far reaches of the Upper Midwest this weekend, I have found warmth thru this 1992 DALi release by the enigmatic band Bel Canto. _Birds of Passage_ was a favorable introduction to what Bel Canto is all about, but _shimmering, warm & bright_, takes this band to another level, much like some ectophiles promised me it would. This is just a *better* effort. The comparisons to the Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance are inevitable, but the unique sound of Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen on this CD make you realize just how futile those comparisons end up being. Don't get me wrong... I'm a big fan of the aforementioned bands and really like what they do. It's just an apples and oranges situation. "Waking Will", the 3rd track on the CD, sends shivers up my spine every time I listen to it. Anneli has the most compelling voice I have heard in quite some time. "Le temps Degage" is a very contemplative, yearning piece of work that haunts the consciousness like a bad dream you enjoy having. The foreign sound is carried forth with the song "die geschichte einer mutter" based on a tale by H. C. Andersen. Fantastic stuff. Thanks to the ecto-folx who referred me to to this album. Especially _The Keep_. Wowza. From the first sung bits of "Temporary and Eternal" (the original version of which never did much for me, I confess), which is simply mind-blowingly AMAZING through to the very end, it's 100% a winner. No human being should be able to sing like that. Wow. I'm sure this will come as a surprise to no one here, but I enjoyed it immensely, even though during the course of the show I developed a severe headache and basically felt like total shit by the end of it. _Strangers World_ is an excellent album (light-years better than _Angels Running_, imo), definitely one of the best of the year. It was great to see Jennifer Kimball performing again, too (even though she now looks just like Susanne White and that's all I could think about when I looked at her :). So I'm sort of partial to those cover versions, myself. In my humble (and widely contested) opinion, Leonard Cohen is one of those brilliant songwriters who shouldn't be allowed to sing their own songs (Tom Waits and Bob Dylan are others). I just can't *stand* his voice. It sets my teeth on edge and my fingers heading for the volume control. But I know that's just me.
